2 Our Private Cellar Selection for Christmas and New Year ticks every box from festive fizz to majestic magnums with many stops in between so this year, why not let Private Cellar help you with all of your Christmas and New Year wine choices, leaving you free to take care of everything else? Our Personal Christmas Favourites To ring the changes, we thought we would start off with our personal favourites those wines that the Private Cellar team will be enjoying throughout the holidays. These can be ordered as whole cases as part of a mixed case in case you d like to try a bottle or two of everything! Andrew Château de Sours Blanc, Bordeaux % I had the good fortune to stay at Château de Sours this summer. The weather was hot and the fridge was full. Once we had sampled various rosés we decided to reacquaint ourselves with the Château s dry white and the 2013 vintage was absolutely delicious. Predominantly Sauvignon Blanc, a dash of Sémillon lifts the fabulous fruit flavours leaving an almost smoky note on the finish. Crisp and fruity on the palate, with good acidity and a lemony freshness to finish. Fab on its own or with turkey. Bordeaux, Ets Jean-Pierre Moueix bottles % magnums I have been selling Moueix wines for 28 years and I like to think I know a bit about them by now, so for my red I have selected the ever dependable J-P Moueix Bordeaux The family, famous for some of the greatest wines on earth, devote an insane amount of effort to their entry level wines and it shows. Take Moueix brilliance with a blindingly good vintage like 2010, buy it in a magnum, and you have the beginning of a very happy Christmas. Think elegance rather than power, this is a very satisfying Merlot based wine that offers sappy, gently tannic flavours that partner red and white meat perfectly. Nicola Arneis DOC, Rocche Costamagna % After many years of questioning why anyone would bother with Arneis, when I tasted Costamagna s version I finally got it: it has the lightness of being which you find on a Sancerre without the grassiness or acidity; it has the plumpness of Chardonnay without the butteriness, and it has the floral notes of Viognier without the sweetness or weight. Sublimely fresh, floral, light and pure with a mineral zip behind, this just works brilliant on its own, perfection with fish and white meats, and characterful enough to match up to game. A real all-rounder! Bodegas Pinuaga Nature, IGP Tierra de la Castilla % I am a complete sucker for a juicy Tempranillo at this time of year, with its belly-warming red berry fruit and slightly higher alcohol to keep the cold at bay. Pinuaga s Nature is a top example where the really primary, brambly black fruit is toned down by a short period in barrel: spiced, juicy, rich yet toasty too, this is deceptively easy to drink either on its own or with hearty stews and roasts an archetypal winter warmer. Laura Terroir Selection Chenin Blanc, Springfontein % Walker Bay, South Africa One taste of Springfontein s gorgeously weighty Chenin Blanc is enough to deter you from ever going back to the bland massproduced versions that find themselves on the South African export market. Tariro Masayiti ferments a portion of the grapes in barrel giving a textured, spiced, toasty yet fresh white which is a staple in the Taylor household at Christmas time. Remarkably versatile, you can pair it with all of the regular fare and it will even work with the famous turkey curry. Ten out of ten for Tariro. Enrique Foster Malbec Finca Castro Barros % Luján de Cuyo Bodega Foster, Argentina At the age of twenty-one I was given an opportunity to work in Argentina by a great friend, David Stevens MW, and so began my love affair with the Andean landscape, floral Torrontés wines and, of course, the rich, dense Malbecs that pair so beautifully with beef. I have already ordered my Finca Castro Barros for Christmas as not only does this rich, toasty, powerful wine partner grilled and roasted meats to perfection but it is also fabulous with cheese and my favourite Boxing Day lunch of cold meats and buttery jacket potatoes... if we don t drink it before then.

James Bourgogne Chardonnay, Domaine Matrot 2011 12 12.5% 13.95 12.56 150.72 If you love white Burgundy but don t want to spend a fortune, this is the wine for you.

Lemony fruit with balanced acidity and a small amount of oak it is delicious and rather moreish. Beaune 1er Cru les Sceaux, Domaine Rois Mages 2010 12 13% 23.70 21.33 255.

3 James Bourgogne Chardonnay, Domaine Matrot % If you love white Burgundy but don t want to spend a fortune, this is the wine for you. Domaine Matrot really know how to make good Burgundy at reasonable prices and this Bourgogne Blanc is their entry level wine with a big heart. Lemony fruit with balanced acidity and a small amount of oak it is delicious and rather moreish. Beaune 1er Cru les Sceaux, Domaine Rois Mages % A Premier Cru red Burgundy made by Anne-Sophie Debavelaere from a fabulous vintage at an affordable price, this is beautifully made, has clean, ripe, red berry fruit and will be delicious with your turkey or goose. Definitely worth a try. Amanda Pouilly Fumé Domaine Thibault, André Dezat % One of my favourite wines, especially at Christmas and New Year, when we indulge in our love of lobster, Cromer crab and locally smoked salmon all of which it provides the perfect partner for. Lively, citrus nose with expansive flavours of ripe pears and white peaches on the palate. Delicious! Barbera d Alba Superiore, Rocche delle Roche % Rocche Costamagna, Italy This wine ticks all the boxes for us during autumn and winter being the ideal accompaniment for pheasant, partridge, wild duck and wood pigeons which appear regularly in the larder, thanks to my sons. Dark cherry fruit and earthy and spicy notes, lovely velvety texture and a very long-lasting, moreish finish. Camilla Viré Clessé, Domaine Seguin Manuel % For the lovers of wines from the Mâconnais, this is a top notch example of how the really talented winemakers are moving into other regions of Burgundy in search of terroirs new. For me this wine strikes the perfect balance between the steely acidity of Chablis and the richness of say a wine from Meursault. Not too exotic, yet still plump and mineral with true balancing acidity and the best news for my thirsty friends is that it is delicious with or without food. Fog Dog Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast, California % I can think of nothing more delicious to accompany our Christmas lunch of Roast Goose than this fantastic wine from the Sonoma Coast. The perfectly balanced acidity of the wine cuts through the fattiness of the goose and even makes the Danish tradition of rice pudding and cherry sauce bearable! If you have not tried the Joseph Phelps wines yet, then be sure to put then at the top of your Christmas list. 4 The Essentials all under 10 a bottle It s always useful to keep a case or two of inexpensive wine on hand at Christmas for unexpected guests, impromptu parties and the round of festive drinks parties. You can have 100% confidence in this selection of European and South African wines without breaking the bank. Domaine de Lamy Fontarèche Blanc % Vin de Pays d Oc Fresh, juicy, zippy with a hint of white flowers, this is beautifully refreshing. Falanghina Antiche Torri, La Guardiense % Fresh and vibrant, with relatively low in alcohol at 12%, the juicy white fruit and supple acidity make for a perfect apéritif. Blouvlei Sauvignon Blanc, Paarl, South Africa % Tasty, gooseberry, grassy fruit, lovely and plump with a refreshing, zippy finish. Just what you need to slake your thirst. Domaine de Lamy Fontarèche Rouge % Vin de Pays d Oc A real Private Cellar favourite. Juicy fruit, blackberry notes, light tannins with a zip of pepper. Simple, delicious pleasure. Rioja Joven, Larchago % Fresh, juicy, utterly oak free, the Joven is designed to drink for fun uncomplicated, no heavy tannins, just supple, alluring and very clearly Rioja. Blouvlei Selection, Wellington, South Africa % A deliciously easy drinking wine with lovely succulent fruit, a touch of musk and a zip of tannic backbone. Mixed Essentials Case A mixed case with two 75cl bottles each of our Christmas Essentials Festive Fizz - Sparkling Wines Christmas calls for lots of bubbles and this year we are offering our sparkling wines separately to Champagne as we think that they deserve a stand-alone section. Starting at just a bottle, what s not to like? We will certainly be celebrating with these wines and recommend them wholeheartedly, especially in magnums. Prosecco Ca Bolani bottles NV 6 11% magnums It took us years to find a Prosecco that we were happy to list in our Private Cellar Selection so after tasting hundreds of horribly dull examples we were thrilled when Ca Bolani came along. Truly refreshing and lively, with notes of green apple and citrus it is handy to have a bottle or two in the fridge for when you have to tackle the gift wrapping and the magnums are brilliant for parties. Crémant de Bourgogne Brut P100 Blanc de Noir NV 12 12% Simonnet Febvre Often recommended by wine writers, our Crémant is made from 100% Pinot Noir, hence the name P100. Grown in Chablis on similar soils and in similar conditions to Champagne, it is hardly surprising that this has much in common with its northern neighbour. Rich, biscuity, with lively citrus notes, racy and fresh. Ambriel Classic Cuvée, West Sussex, England NV 6 12% From the rolling hills of West Sussex comes this gloriously classy English sparkler. Rich, biscuity fruit on the nose, yeasty and fresh, creamy on the palate with lovely bright acidity, this is superb. 5 Réserve de Sours Sparkling Rosé, Bordeaux bottles NV 6 12% This brilliantly versatile sparkling rosé from Château de Sours, delicious with or without food, is made using traditional bottle fermentation à la Champagne from Merlot and Cabernet. The Classics - Bordeaux and Burgundy Some occasions call for the comfort zone of the classics from Bordeaux and Burgundy where reliable favourites take all of the worry out of serving wine. Here we have chosen a few of our top selling wines to get you started and you will find many more to choose from in our 10 th Anniversary wine list and on our website at Sancerre, André Dezat bottles % magnums Crisp, nettley, with lovely minerality, Dezat s Sancerre is a must for Christmas, ticking all the right boxes. And it is even better in magnum. Chablis, Lamblin & Fils % A sublime blend of racy, mineral white fruits with lovely refreshing acidity and a shot of creamy plumpness behind. Classic Chablis; classic Christmas wine. Rully Clos du Moulin à Vent, Domaine Rois Mages % From southern Burgundy, Anne-Sophie Debavelaere s 2012 Clos du Moulin à Vent is superb: linear, mineral, with hints of grapefruit and creamed lemons drinking beautifully now. Château Jeandeman, Fronsac % With lovely concentration and density and a palate of savoury red and black fruits, Château Jeandeman s smoky, full-bodied claret is nicely rustic and honest, offering exceptional value for money. Saint Emilion, Ets Jean-Pierre Moueix bottles % Private Cellar Selection magnums Specially bottled by Christian Moueix for our 10th Anniversary celebrations our Private Cellar Saint Emilion has quickly been adopted by our customers as a true favourite. Supple, fresh and juicy with a zip of tannin and good complexity, this is a perfect Christmas lunch wine, particularly in magnum. Bourgogne Pinot Noir, Domaine Parent % Anne Parent is based in Pommard and much of the fruit for her house red comes from neighbouring Volnay, renowned for its succulent, velvety Pinot, which just about sums this wine up: gorgeously alluring red berry fruit, tarry and lightly spiced. 6 The New World Case The world is a very small place these days a huge advantage for the wine lover as there is so much variety to choose from. Our selection of wines from beyond Europe continues to grow in popularity, each wine bringing a definite sense of southern hemisphere terroir to our tables. Our Blouvlei wines appear in the under 10 Essential case and you ll also find more New World wines in our Personal Favourites section. McNaught & Walker Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc % Awatere Valley, Marlborough, New Zealand Always a favourite at our tastings, as much for the flavour of the wine as the charm of brother and sister team Ruben and Judith Walker. Rich, unctuous not normal Sauvignon descriptions yet with lovely racy acidity and trademark nettles and gooseberry, this is perfect either on its own or with food. Fog Dog Chardonnay, Sonoma Coast, California % Catch this wine whilst you can as the 2012 will be the last vintage now that the vines have come of age and will be used in the production of big brother, Freestone. Burgundian in style, with a twist of new world panache, Fog Dog is a hugely popular wine for its citrus-infused elegance. A gorgeous Chardonnay from the Joseph Phelps stable. Zuiderbosch Selection, Wellington, South Africa % Bridging the gap between Old World and New, this has gorgeous red and black fruits with a hint of leather and mulberry, tarry and spiced and some lovely cigar box notes on the end. And all this for a fabulous price. Bishops Head Pinot Noir, Waipara, New Zealand % Pete Saunders Pinot Noir is very much in the European / Burgundian mould, with glorious red strawberry fruits, creamy and ripe with a lovely zip of tannin. Really classic and a snip compared to an equivalent red Burgundy. Mixed New World Case A mixed case with three 75cl bottles each of our New World selection Champagne Christmas and New Year celebrations simply wouldn t be the same without Champagne and the Private Cellar team will definitely be pouring a bottle or two from our wonderful growers, who have chosen to make their own wine rather than selling their grapes to the bigger Champagne Houses. This is where you will find the very best value in Champagne with no big marketing budgets to support the Chauvet and Legras families are bringing you the very best of their vineyards and generations of winemaking know-how. Champagne Tradition, Legras & Haas NV % Chardonnay-rich, this toasty, lemony, taut and racy Champagne makes for a stunning apéritif yet it is man enough to partner with food too. Champagne Brut Réserve, Henri Chauvet bottles NV 6 12% magnums Principally made from red grapes but with a percentage of Chardonnay too, the Réserve spends additional time in bottle prior to release, giving it a mellower, creamy palate, mature and spectacularly delicious, especially in magnum format. Champagne Rosé, Henri Chauvet NV 6 12% Based on Pinot Noir from his Grand Cru vineyards around Rilly, Damien Chauvet s rosé has a lovely deep pink colour, with a gorgeously scented nose of strawberries and a light herby touch. Fresh and intense this really tastes of red fruits. Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs, Legras & Haas NV % Just six villages in the Côte des Blancs have the right to call themselves Grands Crus, amongst which is Chouilly, where Legras have their vineyards and cellars. Their Blanc de Blancs has an even greater degree of intensity and finesse than the Tradition, with lovely citrusy, biscuity fruit, racy and pure, gorgeously linear. 7 A little bit of Luxury Christmas is the perfect time to treat your friends and family to something really special. This case of luxuriously decadent wines is just the ticket with a classic red and white from France, rich, toasty wines from California and Argentina, vintage Champagne and a tasty half bottle of Sauternes to finish. Meursault 1er Cru Blagny, Domaine Matrot % The southernmost premier cru in Meursault, Blagny is right on the border with Puligny and as a result is more in the linear, citrus style than those wines made in the heart of the appellation. Decant this to open up the racy, lemony white stone fruits, poised and linear, with a zip of honey and hazelnut and a long finish. Joseph Phelps Freestone Chardonnay, Sonoma Coast % California Benefitting from the cool, fresh growing conditions in Sonoma which allow the fruit to mature at its own speed and therefore to develop extraordinary depth, Freestone Chardonnay is rich, with notes of creamed lemons and a distant tropical note elegance and restrained power in a glass. Château Moulinet-Lasserre, Pomerol bottles % magnums Deep, semi-opaque in colour, with sappy, tarry black fruits on the nose and an intense, supple, rich palate, this is both classic 2009 and classic Pomerol. Absolutely stunning. Enrique Foster Limited Edition Malbec, Bodega Foster % Luján de Cuyo, Argentina Pure, primary clean red fruits with just a hint of oak behind, this is elegant, rich and intense. From a selection of the best grapes from all of Enrique Foster s vineyards, with a minimum vine age of 70 years, the severely restricted yields and old vines ensure intensity and power. Decant this for a real treat this Christmas. Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs, Legras & Haas % Legras & Haas only make a vintage Champagne in exceptional years and their 2008, disgorged earlier this year, is incredibly fresh and youthful with lovely buttery fruit, toasty and ripe with a hint of biscuity richness developing behind the lemony notes. Sublime. Château Laribotte, Sauternes half bottles % was a good year for Sauternes, and Château Laribotte s wine is a classic example: caramel, grapefruit, musky orange blossom and candle wax, underpinned by lovely honeyed sweetness and racy acidity. A perfect stocking filler too. Mixed Luxury Case - 6 bottles A mixed case with one 75cl bottles each of our Luxury selection Vintage Port Croft Quinta da Roêda Vintage Port % If you re looking for a brilliant Christmas present, look no further. With each bottle presented in an individual wooden crate-style box Croft s Quinta da Roêda is even wrapped up for you! A blend of traditional Port grapes from one of the Douro Valley s finest vineyards, this exceptionally tasty, early drinking Port has masses of rich black fruits but with a lifting freshness on the finish. Always a huge hit at our tastings. Taylor s Very Old Single Harvest Port % What do you give the 50 year old in your life who has everything? Here s our answer but you ll have to be quick as we only have a few bottles left was not a declared Port vintage, however this doesn t mean that Port wasn t made it was, but instead of being handled like a vintage port and bottled a couple of years after the harvest, it was instead put into barrels and left to mature for years, getting gradually paler in the process and losing much of the sediment traditionally found in bottle-aged ports. It is a style known as Colheita in Portugal, but one which is rarely seen in the UK and just 2000 bottles of the 1964 have been produced. Packed in an individual wooden box, the wine is incredibly pale red-brown, almost amber in colour, with a nose of butterscotch and molasses, smooth and warming on the palate, nutty, spiced with a hint of black pepper, lovely balancing acidity and über-supple tannins, ready to drink now.
