With only cases produced each year, these extremely sought-after single vineyard wines are among the finest red and white wines in the world, so we are delighted to announce the release of the 2014 vintage. Chapoutier s philosophy is to produce wines where the uniqueness of each terroir shines clearly through. Biodynamically farmed, the Sélection Parcellaires are the highest expressions of each appellation coming from some of the finest old vine plots in the Rhône. Also featured in this offer is Chapoutier s Roussillon project: Domaine Bila-Haut. These wines simply get better and better with each passing year. In 2014, following a mild winter and warm spring, bud burst occurred some 3-4 weeks ahead of the norm. However, the cool, damp months of July and August slowed the vines development to such an extent that the actual harvest date proved to be on average in early September. The vines therefore benefitted from a long, slow accumulation of sugars, rather than a faster ripening rate seen in warmer summers like The weather conditions in September could not have been better, as high temperatures and sunny weather ensured that the grapes achieved good phenolic maturity. The Syrah in the more northerly crus produced intensely coloured, powerful red wines with great complexity. The whites have excellent tension and poise thanks to their high acidities and mineral focus. Michel believes that the whites from Hermitage in particular can already be considered great classics. Further south in Châteauneuf du Pape, the regular Mistral wind helped the wines remain fine and elegant as temperatures were moderated. Chapoutier s Sélection Parcellaires 2014 show real promise and with time, some have the potential to become truly excellent. 2 Whites Saint-Joseph Blanc Les Granits /Cs (6x75cl) IB 59/Mgm (1x150cl) IB 2 ha, 100% Marsanne. This wine comes from a small selection of very old Marsanne vines planted on steep granitic slopes in the South of Tournon. Lovely floral intensity intertwined with hints of citrus. A defined minerality brings impact and drive. Grapefruit, lime flowers and an element of flint add to the wine s undoubted quality. Rich, intense yet saline and vibrant. Great precision through to the finale. Drink Neil Sommerfelt MW, H 2 Vin Ermitage Blanc Le Méal /Cs (6x75cl) IB 150/Mgm (1x150cl) IB 2 ha, 100% Marsanne. The vines (more than 50 years old) are low yielding and come from the Méal hillside with alluvial deposit soil and large pebbles which contribute to the soil warming. This wine is very emphatic from the beginning. Hints of grapefruit zest, tomato leaf and star fruit invade the senses. A subtle hint of liquid honey and exotic fruits bring more intrigue and complexity. A telling mineral flintiness ensures that the whole ensemble is kept alive and vibrant. The well judged oak combines perfectly with the richness of the fruit. Long, seamless and saline. Drink Neil Sommerfelt MW, H 2 Vin Ermitage Blanc De L Orée /Cs (6x75cl) IB 162/Mgm (1x150cl) IB 3.5 ha, 100% Marsanne, from Les Murets in the Eastern part of the hill. The rolled pebbles and sand soils were formed by alluvions coming from the Rhône and Isère Rivers during the Ice Age. Made using low yielding old vines (70 years old) It has a bouquet that marries white floral tones with a hint of exotic fruit in a wonderfully inviting medley. The wholemeal spice from the oak combines beautifully. The tight, coiled-spring youth of the wine is emphasised by the linear mineral seam that runs through the core of the wine. The richly textured, creamy fruit is kept in check by its inner vitality. Fine precision too. Drink Neil Sommerfelt MW, H 2 Vin Ermitage Blanc L Ermite ,150/Cs (6x75cl) IB 390/Mgm (1x150cl) IB 0.5 ha, 100% Marsanne. This wine is made from a selection of Chapoutier s oldest Marsanne (some more than 100 years old) situated at the top of the Hermitage hill, behind the chapel, at a place named the Ermite and planted on poor granitic, shallow soils. The granitic soils bring an inner tension, energy and surging minerality to the wine. Complex notes of citrus pith, flowers and a hint of the exotic combine beautifully with the riveting vitality. Deep, sophisticated and intense. An element of iodine heightens the focus and brings more bracing sensations. Silken in profile yet bristles with life. Very fine. Drink Neil Sommerfelt MW, H 2 Vin Reds Crozes-Ermitage Rouge Les Varonniers /Cs (6x75cl) IB 45/Mgm (1x150cl) IB 3.2 ha, 100% Syrah. Les Varonniers is a lieu-dit which has a south-east sloping exposure and similar granitic soils to the Hermitage Hill than the flat terroir of Crozes. Coming from the oldest Crozes-Hermitage vines (more than 60 years old), the wine undergoes the same vinification and maturation as its cousins in Hermitage. Tight & focused offering plenty of ripe blackberry, black olive and spice with a subtle hint of savoury meat. A twist of Asian spice and violet too. Great lift and yet also fine texture. 3 Saint-Joseph Rouge Les Granits /Cs (6x75cl) IB 52/Mgm (1x150cl) IB 2.5 ha, 100% Syrah. This is a selection of Chapoutier s oldest Syrah vines planted in the birthplace of the Saint- Joseph appellation. Immediately very mineral thanks to the granitic soils. Real vibrancy and tension expressed by the flint/pepper notes on the bouquet. Tightly chiselled yet also luxurious. No excess at all. Energetic and invigorating. Great focus and drive. Drink Neil Sommerfelt MW, H 2 Vin Saint-Joseph Rouge Le Clos 2014 Less than 1ha, 100% Syrah. 265/Cs (6x75cl) IB 92/Mgm (1x150cl) IB Excellent focus with a mass of aromatic briary fruit on the bouquet. Great mineral force throughout. Notes of liquorice, anise and tar add intensity and personality. Hints of balsamic help to offset the richness. Composed yet forceful. Exciting. Drink Neil Sommerfelt MW, H 2 Vin Côte-Rôtie La Mordorée /Cs (6x75cl) IB 98/Mgm (1x150cl) IB 3ha, 100% Syrah. Located on the border of the Côte Blonde, this very steep, terraced vineyard is planted with 70 years old vines which produce tiny yields. Tightly wound black fruit offering liquorice, Asian spice, garrigues as well as savoury notes and hints of coaltar. Restrained in structure at present but of excellent precision and expression. Finely-grained tannins keep the profound fruit in check. Vibrancy at its core ensures that the palate does not become fatigued. Drink Neil Sommerfelt MW, H 2 Vin Ermitage Rouge Les Greffieux /Cs (6x75cl) IB 120/Mgm (1x150cl) IB 3.5ha, 100% Syrah. Situated at the foot of the Hermitage Hill, Les Greffieux is a glacial alluvial deposit terrace with shingles and clay planted with vines which are over 50 years old. Very effusive with a rush of fragrant pot-pourri, black tea, Mediterranean wild herbs as well as a hint of tapenade. The luxurious fruit brings a creamy texture to the mid-palate yet the whole ensemble remains tense and alive thanks to a vein of invigorating minerality that teases the taste-buds. Great length and style. Drink Neil Sommerfelt MW, H 2 Vin Ermitage Rouge Le Méal /Cs (6x75cl) IB 170/Mgm (1x150cl) IB 2.2ha, 100% Syrah. Coming from high terraces of shingles and clay ( metres altitude), Le Meal is planted with vines over 50 years old and takes its name from the old French word meaning the best. Very immediate and sweeping thanks to its rich, sweet purity and fine intensity. Blackberry, damson and liquorice bring superb depth, character and focus. Concentrated and finely honed. Persists long on the aftertaste. Drink Neil Sommerfelt MW, H 2 Vin Ermitage Rouge Le Pavillon /Cs (6x75cl) IB 235/Mgm (1x150cl) IB 4 ha, 100% Syrah. Le Pavillon comes from lieu-dit Les Bessards planted with 65 year old vines at an altitude of approximately 130 metres on the Hermitage hill. The extra layering here adds much complexity and intrigue. A yet the wine remains restrained and brooding yet clearly offers much potential. Strong minerality and tension once more brings much drive and precision to offset the intensity of the briary dark fruit. Subtle twist of aromatic wild herbs and fragrant tobacco add undoubted class. 4 Ermitage Rouge L Ermite /Cs (6x75cl) IB 270/Mgm (1x150cl) IB 3 ha, 100% Syrah. Situated at the top of the Hermitage Hill, around the chapel, at over 200 metres, planted with vines over 80 years old. Fine, tight and of superb delineation and refinement. Nothing contrived or forced, just naturally sophisticated. Lovely concentration with purity, precision and vibrancy. A hint of savoury game as well as bramble fruits and a twist of pepper invade the senses. Upright and tightly etched but great class and presence. Patience will be required in order to let this beauty unfurl fully. Drink Neil Sommerfelt MW, H 2 Vin Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge Croix de Bois /Cs (6x75cl) IB 60/Mgm (1x150cl) IB 5 ha, 100% Grenache from Bédarrides. This distinctive terroir is characterised by large rolled quartzite pebbles and sandy red clay, which force the roots to grow deep in the soil and the pebbles protect the topsoil from the drying mistral wind, the sun, and compacting. Very flattering and emphatic offering a panoply of wild Herbes de Provence. Spice, briar and intense yet remains deft and fresh. Finely nurtured tannins provide the required structure. A success for sure. Drink Neil Sommerfelt MW, H 2 Vin Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge Barbe Rac /Cs (6x75cl) IB 63/Mgm (1x150cl) IB 4 ha, 100% Grenache. Planted with approximately 90 year old vines, Barbe Rac is a unique hilltop vineyard, located west of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, littered with the famous galets of the area. The subsoil is a complex and varied mixture of red clay and ferruginous sand. Fragrant and strikingly authentic to its origins. Offering an effusive pot-pourri of Mediterranean garrigues and black tea. Luxurious, creamy and seamless woven yet remains vigorous and focused. Excellent length too. Impressive certainly. Drink Neil Sommerfelt MW, H 2 Vin Côtes du Roussillon Villages Latour de France Domaine de Bila-Haut V.I.T % Grenache (70 year old vines), 35% Syrah. 140/Cs (6x75cl) IB 50/Mgm (1x150cl) IB Lashings of creamy dark black fruit crammed with bramble, garrigue and tar. The wine expresses a real connection with its terroir. Deep, profound and resonant. Minerality energises the palate and ensures that the wine remains balanced and vibrant. Layers of black spiced dark fruit coat the taste buds. A great success. Drink Neil Sommerfelt MW, H2Vin Côtes du Roussillon Villages Lesquerde Domaine de Bila-Haut R.I % Syrah. 170/Cs (6x75cl) IB 60/Mgm (1x150cl) IB Superb focus and intensity here. Sweet ripe dark autumnal berries flecked with anise, graphite and liquorice. Mineral, tight and driven. Powerful and forceful yet never to excess. 5 Notes: The wines should be ready for shipment in late Spring 2016, at Chapoutier s discretion based on bottling dates. Prices are in bond (London City Bond) per case of 6 bottles (75cl) unless otherwise stated. Duty and VAT will be charged at the rate in force at the time of delivery. Delivery will be charged at cost. As always we will do our best to honour last year s buyers repeat requests as fairly as possible. Please bear in mind that all wines are offered subject to availability, especially as there are extreme limitations on this year s stocks. Please also note that the top cuvées are likely to be in very high demand, so preference will be given to orders that buy across the range. This can be discussed in more detail on receipt of requests. 6 Terms & Conditions for En Primeur Purchases All En Primeur prices are quoted In Bond per 12 bottle case delivered to London City Bond Tilbury, excluding Duty, VAT and onward delivery charges. Payment should be made by BACS Transfer, Cheque or debit or credit card at the time of order. At the time of purchase, it would be greatly appreciated if you could please advise us where you would like your wines to eventually be delivered or stored. As soon as our En Primeur shipments arrive at London City Bond, we will contact you to advise you of any additional payments that are due. When withdrawing wine that has been held in bond from a bonded warehouse, Duty, VAT and Delivery charges (if applicable) will be charged at the rates in force at the time of delivery based on the original cost of your wines as we re not permitted to charge taxes in advance of wines arriving into the UK. Delivery Options: Wines staying Under Bond If you have your own bonded storage account at London City Bond Tilbury, then once you have provided us with your account details, we can arrange a Transfer Under Bond. No further charge. If you have a bonded storage account in another bonded warehouse, we can arrange for London City Bond to transfer your wine under bond. In Bond transfers outside of London City Bond Tilbury to other London City Bond Warehouses in England (including Vinotheque) will be charged at per transfer for up to 240 bottles and must be paid before the transfer request is actioned. In bond transfers to London City Bond s warehouse in Scotland will be charged at per transfer for up to 240 bottles. Delivery to Octavian is per transfer for up to 120 bottles (then 2.80 per dozen). Please also advise us of your account details so that we can arrange the transfer. Delivering Duty Paid If you would like us to organise delivery of your wine Duty Paid, our normal delivery terms apply. At the time of delivery to your home address, Duty, VAT and Delivery charges (if applicable) will be charged at the rates in force at the time of delivery based on the original cost of your wines as we re not permitted to charge taxes in advance of wines arriving into the UK. Please note that we will only hold the wines for a maximum of 2 months after we have informed you that your wines have arrived into the UK and are available for delivery. Thereafter a non-refundable storage charge of 5 per week will be applicable before releasing the wines.
