The common cold and flu -- both seasonal and swine flu -- are caused by different viruses but can have some similar symptoms, making them tough to tell apart. In general, the flu is worse and symptoms are more intense. COLDS: Usual symptoms include stuffy or runny nose, sore throat and sneezing. Coughs are hacking and productive. It's unusual to have fever, chills, headaches and body aches, or if present, those symptoms will be mild. FLU: Fever is usually present, along with chills, headache and moderate-to-severe body aches and tiredness. Symptoms can come on rapidly, within three to six hours. Coughs are dry and unproductive, and sore throats are less common. Remember - children must be fever-free for 24 hours (without medication) in order to return to school. Be on the lookout for more information to come on the exciting events happening this year. You won't want to miss it! Gently Used Books Needed by Mary Anne Beshears and Sheree Grow, PTO Got books? The PTO needs your gently used books for our annual FES Used Book Sale held in the spring. You can drop your gently used books in the blue bin located in the front foyer before you enter the office. Muffins with Mom by Cheryl Kidd, PTO We had a wonderful turnout this year for Muffins with Mom. Lots of delicious muffins were consumed!

(Dads - your event is coming up on March 16. Stay tuned!) Counselor's Corner by Andrea Gillette, Guidance Counselor Happy Friday! I hope you and your family had a great week.

The kindergarten, third, and fourth grades came to my class this week. The kindergarten students learned about helpful and harmful decisions.

All the students seem to really enjoy the story so please ask your child about it. The fourth grade students learned the effects of drugs on the body, mind, and relationships.

The first grade students will learn to take medicine only from a trusted adult. The second grade students will also learn about taking medicine from a trusted adult as well as the effects of smoking.

We want to give special thanks to Natalie Orr (Kindergarten parent) and Susanne Thacker (Kindergarten and 2nd grade parent) for making this event such a success! The character word for the month of January is courage. The students have been learning about the courage to say no to unhealthy choices and the courage to make the right decisions. The kindergarten, third, and fourth grades came to my class this week. The kindergarten students learned about helpful and harmful decisions. The third grade students learned about helpful and harmful drugs. The students listened to Mac s Choice in which the students learn how drugs affect the character s life. All the students seem to really enjoy the story so please ask your child about it. The fourth grade students learned the effects of drugs on the body, mind, and relationships. This week, students learned about smoking and alcohol. The first and second grade students will come to my class next week. The first grade students will learn to take medicine only from a trusted adult. The second grade students will also learn about taking medicine from a trusted adult as well as the effects of smoking. I would like to inform you that Mrs. Kendall Knox, School Counselor Intern, will be working with me through the end of April. She looks forward to working with the students, and I know she will love being at Franklin Elementary. She is already enjoying the hugs from our sweet students.
