The first settlers in Martin County were primarily of English origin. In 1872, H.F. Shearman, a Connecticut lawyer, went on a hunting trip to Martin County.

He then returned to England and influenced many Englishmen, some quite wealthy, to invest in Martin County.

Being very impressed with the economic potential of the area, he purchased land near Fairmont and developed it into a model farm. He then returned to England and influenced many Englishmen, some quite wealthy, to invest in Martin County. Shortly thereafter, the first young English investors arrived in 1873, immediately buying land and planting beans in hopes of a quick fortune. ~ Bean Town ~ In June of 1873, grasshoppers (locusts) worked their way from the Dakotas and destroyed everything. The resilient Englishmen replanted, but lost their crop to an early killing frost in October. Undaunted, they returned to England and recruited a larger group of new investorcolonists to return the next spring. They arrived in the spring of 1874 and planted beans on a larger scale. However, during June the locusts hatched and once again destroyed the bean crop. They again replanted and this time they finally were able to harvest a crop in the fall. From 1875 to 1878 more Englishmen joined the colony and faced the locust plague to varying degrees along with partial crop failures due to weather. Eventually, the financial losses forced many of the English colonists to abandon their efforts to grow beans and try other enterprises. Eventually the largest group of colonists returned to England while a smaller, second group settled in various major cities in the US.
