Altoona Elementary Newsletter Happy Spring Altoona Elementary Families! Spring is here! The robins are returning and the temperatures are rising. Soon the snow gear will not be needed, but until then please keep sending snow pants, boots, hats, and gloves/mittens. It is pretty wet out there! Our spring Family Learning Night was held on March 8th. The theme was growth mindset. In a growth mindset, people believe their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience essential for great accomplishment as quoted by Carol Dweck, Professor of Psychology at Stanford University. During Family Learning Night, students and families experienced several different activities to stretch their thinking and exercise their brains. A great time was had by all! We are looking forward to a few upcoming events to finish out the school year. On Friday, April 13th is the Red Carpet Family Dance sponsored by our PTO. This will be a fun night of music and dancing! Grandparents/Special Friend s Day is on Friday, May 4th. Grandparents and special friends will get to visit students classrooms and do some fun activities with them as well. Watch for more details coming out soon for both events. Sincerely, Tara Betlach Elementary Principal Earliest drop off time 7:20am School begins at 7:45am End of school day 2:55pm Office closes at 3:45pm Reach your teachers before 7:45am & after 2:55pm What happens in the first 15 minutes of your child s school day? 2 MARCH RAIL BUCK WINNERS SCHOOL RULES SAFE RESPONSIBLE RESPECTFUL
Kindergarteners have been hard at work in reading, writing, and math this month! In reading we have been working on our adventure story unit; every classroom focused on many different story series, including but not limited to: Little Critter, Curious George, Arthur, The Berenstain Bears, Dr. Seuss, Henry and Mudge, and Frog and Toad. Students learned about the jobs of an author and an illustrator, while also focusing on story elements such as characters, setting, and major events. To marry this unit, in writing the students have been working on their own adventure stories with a beginning, middle, and end. They have been working on opinion writing as well. In math, we have ventured into story problems over the past few weeks, talking more and more about addition and subtraction.
March has been a busy month for us in First Grade! We are working in our Seasons Unit. Students worked in groups to create a poster based on their season. We have also been working on paragraph writing using the traffic light model. We went to the theater to enjoy Junie B. Jones. We also celebrated Dr. Seuss day wearing pajamas and reading many of his classic books and learned about St. Patrick Day traditions.
The second grade is very excited to announce we have started Language Workshop! It has proven to be one of the most fun parts of our day. The teacher shares a mentor text and then leads the students with discussion questions about, within, and beyond the text. The students are encouraged to participate without raising their hands and carry on discussion with talk moves. The students really love the idea of not having to raise their hands to talk and are working on being frogs during the discussion time. Log: Sits and says nothing Frog: Hog: Jumps in and gives their thoughts, then listens as others share. Talks all the time not allowing others to share their opinion. Here are a few of the talk moves we are using: I agree with because... I disagree with because... I have a connection... I want to add on to what said... Rail registration information and directions will be available on the Altoona School District website April 3rd. Summ RAIL K-4 Session 1 June Session 2 July 9-27 RAIL 5-8 Session 1 only June er Ca mp
Third grade students have just completed the unit "Think Like a Scientist." Within this unit, students read nonfiction texts as they researched a topic of their choice. Within the texts, students learned about non-fiction text features and text structures. They connected this learning to their writing when they created a slide show presentation of their scientific topic. In content time, students completed different activities and projects on biomes to support their learning in reading and writing. Mrs. Goetll also led a Target Time extension where students used STEAM to create beautiful dioramas of biomes. These are displayed in our school library. The school store is something new and exciting students get to do in third grade. This student-led store comes around to each third-grade classroom twice per month. Students have the opportunity to spend their rail bucks on toys, snacks, and supplies. Each classroom takes a turn operating the store. Students go through an application process and job training to be a "store employee" during the month.
School Counseling Corner Cooperative Play in First Grade In Classroom Guidance, first graders put their healthy play skills to the test. In this activity, they needed to decide on one idea to build in their groups by talking out their ideas, coming up with a fair way to decide on the final building decision, and determining how they would each play a role in the building of their structure. Once they all came to an agreement they were given the blocks, and it was time to build. Previously through the healthy play curriculum, students learned the number one reason we play is to have fun. The most important part of any game is to have people to play with. If students had difficulty getting along, they used the healthy play skill of Rule 2. Using Rule 2, two people who are arguing leave the activity to talk it out in the Rule 2 spot before returning to the activity. All of our specialist classrooms have a Rule 2 spot to provide a place and an opportunity for students to peacefully settle their disagreements. By the smiles on their faces, it looks like they had a great time building together. Want to learn more about what is happening in school counseling at Altoona Elementary School? Follow me on
