1 Lodge #1923 Crier February 2010 The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of USA From the Desk of The Exalted Ruler Welcome to February, the month in which we celebrate both Valentine s Day (flowers are already on order.) and the birthdays of two of our greatest presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We as Americans and Elks have learned much from these men, primarily the ability to persevere thru difficult times and challenges. Leadership is about challenges and the way in which we react to them. Our first chance to step up this month will be February 6th with our PER raffle, which we will replenish our fund we use to feed the residents at Portage Towers. The raffle will be followed Sunday February 7th with our Super Bowl Party. Our lodge has progressed nicely in the last year and I owe thanks to the many who have worked tirelessly to promote our lodge. Last, but not least, we will be electing club officers in February for 2010/2011. We will likely have several openings. As someone who has served in a couple of different capacities, volunteering has its own rewards. Please contact Buzz Zimmerman of you are interested. Ground Beef (I tend to use more) 3/4 C Chopped Onion 1 tsp. Dried Basil 1/4 to 1/2 T Pepper 1 T Dried Parsley Flakes 4 C Diced Peeled Potatoes (or use frozen 3/4 C Shredded Carrots 4 T Butter or Marg. Divided Ore Ida Hash Browns) 3/4 C Diced Celery 3 C Chicken Broth 1/4 C All Purpose Flour 8 oz. Velveeta Cheese, Cubed (2 C) 1 1/2 C Milk 3/4 T Salt 1/4 C Sour Cream In 3 quart saucepan, brown beef, drain & set aside. In same saucepan, sauté onion, carrots, celery, basil & parsley in 1 tablespoon butter until vegetables are tender, about 10 minutes. Add broth, potatoes & beef; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover & simmer minutes or until potatoes are tender. Meanwhile, in small skillet, melt remaining butter. Add flour; cook & stir 3-5 minutes or until bubbly. Add to soup; bring to a boil. Cook & stir 2 minutes. Reduce heat to low. Add cheese, milk, salt & pepper; cook & stir until cheese melts. Remove from heat; blend in sour cream. Yield: 8 servings (2-1/4 quarts) Variations: Use left over pot roast instead of hamburger & cut into small pieces or use beef broth instead of chicken broth from roast or canned beef broth. Don Ursetti s Pasta Fagioli Recipe Pre-cook sweet bulk Italian sausage (three-quarter lb. or one lb.) & pre-boil pasta (3/4 Cup Delallo Elbow Macaroni No. 52 recommended) Pour 1/2 C of olive oil into sauce pan. Place heat on medium setting. Add 2 diced onions & 1 tsp. of minced garlic. Stir and cook until onions are soften. Add a level tsp. of Italian seasonings. Add two oz. cans of diced tomatoes and two oz. cans of tomato sauce. Stir well. Drain fluid from two oz. cans of Great Northern beans and add beans to sauce. Let simmer for 5 minutes. Add pre-cooked sausage and stir in. Add pre-boiled pasta and stir in. Sprinkle on a wide layer of Parmesan Cheese and stir in. Optional: season with pepper and more Parmesan Cheese to taste. 6 FROM THE ELKS KITCHEN I have been in the Elks kitchen for a little over 4 months. When I started I wasn't sure what the members wanted other than spaghetti on Wednesday and fish on Friday. Boy was I wrong! What I want to bring to the Elks kitchen is quality food at affordable prices. Most of our food is prepared fresh and all of our sauces are homemade. Every Wednesday and Friday I have been trying different meals for specials. They will be posted at the lodge in advance. This Lenten Season I thought I would start off the season on Ash Wednesday with Perch Dinner for $6.95. Then every Friday night from 5:30-8:00 p.m., I will be serving Fish & Chips for $7.95, Broiled Cod for $7.95 and all you can eat Perch Dinner for $9.50. I hope you come in and try the Wednesday and Friday Dinners and also remember lunches are served Monday thru Fridays as well. Rick Spinelli SUPER BOWL PARTY Sunday, February 7th We will be supplying Sausage Sandwiches and the fixin s. Please sign up at the Lodge if you will be able to attend so we have a head count. Bring a side dish to share but not necessary. We are collecting toiletries and personal items to be donated to the VA Hospital. Next time you are at the store pick up an extra toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, comb, brush etc... and drop them off the next time you are at the lodge. These types of items are inexpensive to your pocketbook but have great worth to the folks that will be receiving them. ATTENTION ALL BOWLERS The bowling season is coming to an end and what a great season it has been. If you didn't play, make sure you sign up in the fall so you don t miss out on all the fun! 7 The P.E.R. Association would like to thank the volunteers for preparing, serving and the clean up for another successful Christmas Dinner served to the residents of Portage Towers. They were well fed and the residents showed their appreciation. Thanks to Bill Dennis for donating the deviled eggs and to Ned Stemple and Andy and Clare Myers for preparing the turkeys. A special thanks to Jim Bisheimer for donating his special mix. Baby Picture Competition Saturday, March 13th We will be having a guess whose baby picture is whose competition Members and spouses bring in one of your baby pictures (4 years or younger) in a sealed envelope (make sure you label picture with your name) and leave the envelope at the bar marked to the attention of Joe Dobbertin before February 20th. Voting to end March 9th. (Details will be posted at the Lodge) Have any clothes that you have been meaning to donate to a worthy cause? Mike Hill Sr. is collecting clothing to be donated to Vietnam Veterans Organization. Drop off your items to the lodge and mark them clothing to be donated, attention Mike Hill.
