1 RAMBLIN REPORT Volume 12, Issue 2 February 2013 Happenings Officers President: Rich Gavin , cell; rhgretired@gmail.com Vice-President: John Johnson johnsuervn@yahoo.com Secretary/Treasurer: Debby Thompson debbykt@gmail.com Wagon Master: Al Richardson; , wturkeyiii@.comcast.net Newsletter: Sherrie Risberg , cell risbergs@comcast.net Reporters: Everyone Camping Tip Use an empty potato chip canister to hold that roll of garbage bags. The February campout was held at the Good Sams of Florida Winter Samboree at Rodeheaver Boys Ranch in Palatka, FL. Rich and Jeannie Gavin, Chick and Debby Thompson, Herb and Norma Sheldon, Ken and Sherrie Risberg, Al and Della Richardson and guests Bob, Kim and Glenda (mom) Willie, and Ray and Digna Rivera. Al and Della were parked with their other chapter, Getaway Sams and participated with them for the week. Ken and Sherrie were parked with the state staff. Everyone else was parked together and were fortunate enough to be not too far from the building. The sites in Palatka are an easy pull thru so even though we did not arrive together it was still easy to be together. Ken and Sherrie arrived with the rest of staff on Sunday to help get everything set up for the samboree. Tuesday was the first day of parking and the rains let loose. It poured most of the morning. Rich waited out the rain in Orange Park before leaving for the samboree. By the time he arrived in camp, the rain had stopped and the rain formed lakes were back to puddles. The boys ranch has worked hard on the drainage and it really passed the test this year. Tuesday evening is Samgo (Bingo). Sherrie played and won $6. Herb and Norma model their new vests. Wednesday morning we started the day with sausage biscuits. They are now also serving oatmeal each morning which was great. Rich took his time getting to the building and missed the biscuit-sorry Rich. Herb, Norma, Chick and Debby arrived in camp before lunch time. Al stopped by to visit. They all made their way up to the building to register and check out the vendors. Ken delivered Norma and Herb their new Sunset Ramblers vests so they would have them for the opening ceremonies. Guests, Ray and Digna arrived and quickly made themselves at home. They registered and checked out the building. Ray and Digna went to town for supper. Everyone else fended for themselves. Soon it was time to head for the building for opening ceremonies. Rich carried our flag and then headed back to be with Jeannie at the rig. Sherrie was busy taking pictures for the state. Chick, Debby, Norma, President Rich Gavin
2 Page 2 Herb, Ray and Digna enjoyed the entertainment but not the cold. They headed back to their warm rigs for the balance of the evening. Thursday morning Rich made his way to the building in time for breakfast. Chick and Debby ventured out by 10:00. Norma and Herb headed to town to run some errands. Guests, Bob, Kim and Glenda arrived, set up camp and came up to the building. Chick and Debby won a new 9x12mat from the door prize table. Debby sold 50/50 tickets. Everyone helped sell tickets during the hot dog lunch. Soon it was time to for our volunteer job. We had Dr. Sambones and door Ken and Sherrie at the hot dog lunch. prizes from 1-3 pm. Everyone including our guests took a turn at working the stations. Immediately after the volunteer job it was time for the state committee meeting. Ken, Sherrie, Rich, Debby, and Chick all attended. We learned that the new constitution and bylaws from national are for national, state and chapters all in one document. We will need to write standard operating procedures for the chapter. We gathered at Rich s after the meeting and everyone enjoyed spending time together, even Ken and Sherrie got to drop in for a few minutes. Dinner was on our own. Chick, Debby, Ken, Sherrie, Bob, Kim and Glenda headed up to the building for the state 50/50, Sherrie, Bob, Kim and Glenda stayed for the samgo. Fuzzy Pucker was having initiations following samgo. Norma, Ray, Dinga, Bob, Kim and Glenda all became Fuzzy Puckers. Friday morning was another samboree breakfast. Norma and Herb went back to town and headed out very early. Rich and Debby worked on selling 50/50 tickets during breakfast and Al assisted. Chick and Debby went to the dealer displays to check out the rigs. Norma and Herb had also spent time at the dealers and they fell in love with a rig so they were working on the numbers. Rich won a Mexican Train domino set as his door prize and Herb and Norma won $10 at Walmart. Rich collected ice cream and took it back Norma and Herb selling 50/50 tickets. Rich, Herb, Kim, Bob, Glenda, Debby Norma, Ray, Jeannie, Chick to Jeannie. Herb and Norma sold 50/50 raffle tickets while Chick and Debby checked out the gift shop, vendors, and flea market. 3 Page 3 What s Cooking? Skillet Meatloaf By Jeannie and Rich Gavin Ingredients: 1/2 cup water 1/4 cup steak sauce or ketchup 2 tsp. vegetable oil 1-1/4 cups tomato sauce 3/4 cup dried bread crumbs 1 small onion diced 1 small green pepper, chopped 1/4 cup skim milk 1 tsp. garlic salt 1 egg 1 lb. Ground beef or chuck Directions: Combine bread crumbs, onion, pepper, milk, garlic salt, egg and pepper to taste in a bowl. Add meat and knead with your hands until mixed completely. Add oil to a 9 inch skillet. Transfer meat mixture to skillet and form into an 8 inch patty. Cook over medium heat about 5 minutes, occasionally lifting up patty with a wide spatula and tilting pan to let oil run under the patty, until bottom is browned. Discard excess fat. Place a plate over top of skillet and carefully invert skillet and plate together so patty is on the plate. Slide patty uncooked side down, back into the skillet and cook about 3 minutes, until underside is just beginning to brown. Discard excess fat. Combine tomato sauce, steak sauce and water in a bowl. Pour over meat and bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer about 20 minutes until patty is cooked through. Let stand 5 minutes before cutting into wedges and serving with sauce from skillet. for happy hour at Rich s and day visitors to the samboree, Ed and Jan stopped by to visit. Everyone enjoyed the time. Ken and Sherrie collected the food for the food bank. Later Bob, Kim and Glenda went to town for supper. Everyone else had dinner on their own as the wind made it chilly to sit outside. Friday night there were heaters in the building for entertainment. They helped take the edge off the cold. The entertainment was enjoyed by all. Saturday morning we all had breakfast at Rich s. Al and Della came by for breakfast and even Ken and Sherrie got to come. Bob helped cook bacon, Debby made her hash brown casserole. Rich supplied anything we forgot. It was a great way to start the day. Everyone did their own thing until it was time for the North Florida Lifetime Sams meeting. Bob and Kim came as guests to the meeting. Sherrie had to leave early to go take pictures of the rig decorating contest. Food plans were discussed for the labor day cocampout but were not finalized. We gathered for potluck at 4:00. It was so windy and therefore cold Rich volunteered to host inside. What a welcome relief and great plan. Thank you to all the cooks! The food was delicious. As soon as clean up was done it was time to head to the building for entertainment. Sherrie was happy to give Jeannie a ride on the golf cart. They found a table right under a heater!! Rich took up our 50/50 drawing. We were pleased to give away $70 which also means we raised $70 for charity. Rich and Jeannie were the only ones to leave early from entertainment. Jeannie can only take those rental chairs for so long. The entertainer was great. No one won an extra door prize. Sunday morning we took our time getting ready to leave. Everyone is looking forward to the next gathering at Pecan Park RV in Jacksonville FL, March 15-17, We waved good bye to staff as we left. Chapter Meeting Information Rich holding the 50/50 drawing. Raised $70 for charity and $70 to the winner. We did not hold a chapter meeting. Please reminder to bring canned food for the food bank to all campouts and be sure to let Rich and Al know your plans. No specific plans were made for food for the March campout so let s plan on our usual potluck Saturday night. Sherrie is planning on bringing cake and ice cream for 8pm Friday night for the March birthdays.
