3 Helpful guidelines on appropriate dress Crooked Billet Day Costumes Girls: You can usually use clothing you have on hand. Some accessory items can give a colonial look. Try using scraps of lace to decorate sleeve bottoms. Small fringed tablecloths make good shawls. Some inventive parents have made aprons using pillow shams, and even café curtains, so use your imagination! Dress or skirt should be full length. Add ruffles or lace to the sleeves of the dress or blouse. A scarf, cape, or shawl can be worn. Colonial skirts were usually full, and gathered at the waist. A white apron can be added, if desired. Most girls wear duster caps on sale in the office several days before Crooked Billet Day. You can also pin lace or ribbons in the hair for a cap. Boys: Don t hesitate to borrow Mom s lace handkerchief to pin on your collar, or your sister s ruffled blouse most boys do and it looks great. Shirts should be white, and buttoned to the neck. A piece of lace or ruffles should be attached to the neck in place of a tie. Knickers, breeches, or long pants (rolled to the knee or tucked inside long white socks) should be black, or another dark color. A dark suit jacket or a dark solid or patterned vest can be worn. Shoes should be black any style and have a silver or gold buckle, which is simply a cardboard cutout covered with tinfoil or metallic paint. Most boys wear tricorns, which are available for sale in the office several days before Crooked Billet Day.
