2 Facts about Hawaii that you should know The Coolest, Historical and Fun facts about Hawaii Islands If you are planning Hawaii vacation, it is good to know some facts about Hawaii beforehand. Here are some interesting Hawaii trivia that you should know before setting foot on this tropical paradise: 10 facts about Hawaii Hawaii boasts the highest percentage of working women amongst all the states of the US. The State Motto of Hawaii is - "Ua mau ke ea o ka aina I ka pono", which translates as "The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness". Hawaii, with an area of square miles, is the widest US state when measured from east to west. The Hawaiian national anthem is "Hawaii Ponoi" (Hawaii's Own). The song was penned by King Kalakaua, while the music was composed by Henri Berger. The only royal palace in the United States is located in downtown Honolulu and is known as Iolani Palace. The Hawaii Islands emerged as a result of a series of undersea volcano eruptions that occurred thousands of years ago. Hawaii is the only state in US where the majority of the inhabitants are non-white. Hawaii is the only American state to have coffee plantations in it. Hawaii has an average population density of about persons per square mile in the US. Each year Hawaii produces about 320,000 tons of pineapple. Fun facts about Hawaii Majority of the Hawaiian couples live with others, resulting in the fact that Hawaii has the lowest percentage of home ownership. It is stated in Hawaii s state constitution that any island (located within the region) not named as belonging to a county belongs to Honolulu. This makes Honolulu the largest city in the world. Surprisingly, electric lights were used in the Iolani Palace four years before they were used in the White House! Kids facts about Hawaii There are just 12 letters in the Hawaiian alphabet. The alphabet system comprises five vowels (A, E, I, O, U) and seven consonants (H, K, L, M, N, P, W). The state bird of Hawaii is Nene, the Hawaiian goose, while the Humpback whale is the state marine mammal. Yellow hibiscus is the flower of the state. Historical facts about state of Hawaii Hawaii was the 50th state admitted to the union on August 20, Hawaii had the oldest newspaper, known as the Sandwich Island Gazette ( ), circulating in the west of the Rocky Mountains. The name Hawaii probably originated from the combination of the words "Hawa" and "ii", which means "a new homeland". Some people also believed that the region was named after the traditional discoverer Hawaii Loa. Cool facts about Hawaii The Hawaiian state dance is known as the Hula. Waikiki is one of the most famous tourist locations, which attracts 72,000 visitors, (about 44 percent of the total tourists present in the entire state of Hawaii). Hawaii follows its own time zone (Hawaiian Standard Time) and there is no daylight savings time for the state.

4 I ll be there in a minute Post on: July 26, 2016 By Harriet Hodgson I am my husband s primary caregiver. Although a paid caregiver comes each morning to get him up, I m the person on the job day and night. A while ago my husband was hospitalized for pneumonia and he spent three and a half days in the hospital. Shortly after he came home he had two more bouts of pneumonia, and his recovery has been slow. I ve been slow too. My husband needs more help than he used to, and often asks for help when I m cooking a meal, writing at the computer, or doing laundry. I ll be there in a minute, I call. But it s never a minute and my husband knows this. Consequently, I often feel guilty for not providing instant service. I feel guilty when I can t help right when he needs me Guilt is the last thing I need in my overly-busy life. Gail Sheehy, in her book, Passages in Caregiving, asks caregivers not to succumb to guilt. Guilt-driven caregivers and those culturally scripted to dedicate their lives to sick parents inevitably sacrifice too much, she observes. At a time when we need to be lifted up, guilt creeps into our minds and drags us down. Your caregiving situation may be similar to mine. How can we make things easier? Be specific We can tell what we are doing and how much longer it will take. You may be making pudding, for example, and have to keep stirring, pour the pudding into a bowl, and put it in the refrigerator. An example from my life, I just stepped out of the shower and am putting on my clothes. I ll be there in five minutes. Ask for specifics Can your loved one wait a few minutes? Respond immediately if your loved one has fallen, is in pain, or not making sense. I posted a list of emergency phone numbers next to my high-volume phone. (I have a hearing loss.) In addition, I know how long it takes to get from our place to the hospital. Be honest with feelings Married for nearly 59 years, my husband and I have an honest relationship. I ve told him several times that I feel guilty when I can t drop everything to help him. His reply: I m not trying to pressure you. Still, I feel pressured when the person I adore needs my help and has to wait for it. Although he says he understands, our situation hasn t changed all that much, and my guilt feelings don t go away. Practice self-kindness Swedish author Henrik Edberg, in his article, Self-Kindness: 7 Habits that will Help You to Live a Happier Life, posted on The Positivity Blog, thinks self-kindness include countering negative Continued on next page

5 Continued thoughts, finding time for ourselves, and focusing on the benefits of caregiving. According to Edberg some of these benefits are more perseverance, increased self-esteem, inner happiness, and positive relationships. I think we have to accept the realities of caregiving and one is not providing instant service. We are people, not machines, and doing the best we can. That s all anyone can do. Let s give ourselves a round of applause! Learning to forgive myself Post on: May 14, 2016 Michelle Daly Do you feel like you re doing the best you can, all the time? No matter how hard I try, it gets to me sometimes. Love alone isn t enough for me to not lose my cool. Maybe it should be. Maybe it is for you. (is it?). But the pressure mounts the bills are piling up, insurance is denying preapproved claims, the laundry, the dishes, meals to be cooked, lunches to be packed, the mortgage is late. My boss is losing patience with how distracted I am and how I m always late. Sometimes I lose my cool. I yell. Or I just get that tone in my voice that shows how annoyed I am. And then I feel so guilty. So guilty and so tired. I m just so tired all the time. It helps to hear how other caregivers feel this way, too. That maybe it s not great, not okay, but understandable for me to not be as good as I want to be all the time. Do you feel like you re doing the best you can, all the time? you re doing the best you can, under difficult circumstances. Try not to be so hard on yourself, okay? Denise M. G. forgive yourself, for not being able to do the impossible and for your very normal feelings. Those are feelings of frustration and they do not lessen the love you have for your parents I had assumed I had to caregive alone, but then I found that there had been people I could call on for help all along. I should have spoken up. Nancy L. The hard truth is you can only do as much as you can do. It is terribly hard for us to accept that we cant fix it or do more more more. The best and most that we can do for those we love and care for is to love them and do what we can within reasonable parameters. You are giving them all that you can and you love them you have to accept that. Barbara F. We all lose it from time to time. Whoever says they don t probably doesn t even know they did. Yes, Forgive yourself and move on. Longterm Caregiving is the hardest thing ever to do. Diane L.B. Forgive yourself..it happens to all of us more than we would like others to know! Being tired and stressed gets to the best of us and few among us are saints we all do the best we can and just keep going! Micki T. How do you keep your cool? And how do you forgive yourself when you lose it?
