2 Calling All Cajuns 2 Letter from the President Hi, I am pleased to have been elected as President of the Acadian Memorial Foundation Board. I have served on the Board for a few years now and am honored to work with such a hard working group of devoted individuals. Joining me on the Board are Randy Menard, President Elect, and Marty Guidry, Treasurer. I work for the St. Martin Parish Library where I help patrons explore their family genealogies. In addition I have started an archive of maps, local documents and photographs in an effort to preserve St. Martin Parish s past. This year I m using my skills as an historian working with a committee to research and write a history for St. Martinville s Bicentennial. I am also a mother of two amazing young adults and grandmother to two budding geniuses. At our recent Annual Meeting we celebrated the 20 th Anniversary of the Acadian Memorial. Jane Bulliard, an Acadian Memorial Founder and valuable member of the Board was honored for her years of service. Those in attendance were treated to a cake supplied by Sweet Southern Ladies, Martha Resweber Hebert and Becky Resweber Guidry, daughters of Acadian Memorial founder, Pat Resweber. Mark Rees of Projet Nouvelle Acadie/ New Acadia Project gave an update on their archeological findings. Dr. Rees accepted a donation for Projet Nouvelle Acadie from the Acadian Memorial Foundation to help continue their work. A Day of Remembrance to Acadians July 28, 1755 marked the beginning of Le Grand Derangement when the deportation order was signed by English. This July 28 the Acadian Memorial honors the memories of the struggle of the early Acadians in announcing the Living Legend. Join us for The National Day of the Acadians on August 15. The monthly Genealogy workshops will return to the Acadian Memorial in September. Have a safe summer and try to stay cool. Sincerely, Patty Gutekunst August 15 Acadian Memorial National Day of the Acadians Arrête-toi ami, lis mon nom et souviens-toi... Stop friend, read my name and remember.
3 Calling All Cajuns 3 Living Legend inducted : mavis frugé Acadians, friends, Board members and Past Presidents joined together on July 28 at the Acadian Memorial for a Day of Commemoration. The Acadian Museum of Erath joined with the Acadian Memorial to induct into the Order of Living Legends, Mavis Arnaud Frugé, a long-time promoter of the French language and Acadian culture, as well as a member of the Acadian Memorial Foundation. Mavis, a native of Arnaudville, has been a tireless and gracious advocate of Acadian culture and the French and Creole languages for 25 years, from her participation in Théâtre Cadien to her monthly La Table Française d Arnaudville (which hosts participants). Arnaudville has become an international center for cultural and artistic exchanges in large part due to Mavis. She is the Director of the Jacques Arnaud French Studies program which has welcomed students from LSU, NYU, Indiana State University and University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Mavis is also Vice-President of NUNU`s Arts and Culture Collective. George Marks of NUNU`s credits Mavis with helping to make Arnaudville a living community, a cultural ecosystem that builds on traditions while embracing modern technologies. She makes French fashionable, and we (the Francophone community) follow her lead like the children of Hamlet. In 2015, Mavis was named "Chevalier des Palmes académiques" by the French government and awarded the 2013 Lt. Governor s Prix de la Franco-Responsabilité. Her wit, creativity and energy have been invaluable assets to the Acadian Memorial since she joined the Board of Directors of the Foundation in This Day of Commemoration was established on July 28, 1755, as it was the date that the British Governor Charles Lawrence signed an order of removal of all Acadians from Acadie, roughly the Canadian provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and the U.S. state of Maine. This order was carried out amid a resistance movement that continued for 7 years. The ensuing diaspora spanned both sides of the Atlantic Ocean spreading all the way to Louisiana. The Acadian Memorial honors the Acadians who arrived in Louisiana from 1764 through In 1988, Warren Perrin spearheaded a campaign to compel Queen Elizabeth II of England to apologize for the Acadians' expulsion from Nova Scotia. In 2003, the Governor General of Canada, on behalf of Queen Elizabeth, signed a proclamation acknowledging the wrongs committed against the Acadians in the name of the British crown. The proclamation also established an annual day of commemoration on July 28. The Order of Living Legends was established in 1996, by Kermit Bouillion, former Director of the Acadian Museum. Each year on July 28, the Acadian Museum joins with the Acadian Memorial to confer the honor to a recipient who has made extraordinary efforts in supporting and strengthening our culture. We welcome Mavis Frugé into this prestigious Order and wholeheartedly endorse the selection.
