A Publication of The Acadian Memorial Foundation Fourth Quarter 2016 Flooding impacts downtown St. martinville On Saturday, August 13, 2016, due to over 20 inches of rainfall around the area, the banks of the Bayou Teche overflowed in downtown St. Martinville and into the Acadian Memorial, the Cultural Heritage Center, which houses the African American Museum and the Museum of the Memorial. One foot of mud and water invaded the Acadian Memorial, while up to 18 inches slimed its way into the Cultural Heritage Center. The Robert Dafford and Dennis Paul Williams murals are fine, as well as most of the exhiits. Due to the sheetrock damage, everything will have to be removed from the Cultural Heritage Center to repair it. The Acadian Memorial is in a bit better shape, although we are waiting on some information to make a final determination. We re working with FEMA and cultural experts to return the museums to their original state, but it will take some time. It s still a bit early to predict but the earliest the museums will re-open is the end of November. Additional photos on page 2. 2 Calling All Cajuns 2 From the President, Letter from the President South Louisiana continues to recover from August s unprecedented flooding. As rain fell on Acadiana and St. Martinville the Bayou Teche was unable to contain the over 2 feet of water falling from the heavens. Eventually the water from the swollen Teche swept into the low areas along its banks. New Market Street in St. Martinville was one such area. Unfortunately, the Acadian Memorial and the St. Martinville Cultural Heritage Center were in the water s way. The water rose incredibly fast and luckily it receded quickly, leaving behind a film of wet, slick sediment that infiltrated through locked doors and cement walls. Elaine Clement, Director of the Acadian Memorial and her staff are to be commended for their hard work. They ensured the safety of the Robert Dafford mural of The Arrival of the Acadians in Louisiana in the Acadian Memorial and the exhibits in the Cultural Heritage Center. The exhibits in the Cultural Heritage Center are being removed for storage. Once repairs and restorations are complete in the two buildings Acadiana can expect grand re-openings! National Acadian Day, August 15th celebrations were cancelled at the Acadian Memorial due to the flooding. Celebration of Acadian Day will be planned for August 15, I hope to see you there. This year s L Ordre du Bon Temps on November 10, 2017 promises to be a great meal with good friends. 3 Calling All Cajuns 3 L'Ordre du Bon Temps Louisiane On 21 June 2006, the Board of Directors of the Acadian Memorial Foundation adopted bylaws to apply to a Division of the Foundation known as L'Ordre du Bon Temps or The Order of Good Times. The addition of "Louisiane" distinguishes us from a similar organization of our Canadian cousins. As descendants of the Acadians, the organizers patterned the new Order after the Gourmet Club established by Samuel de Champlain in 1606 in Acadie, the oldest known Gourmet Club in North America. "We spent this winter very joyously and of good times, due to the L'Ordre de Bon Temps that I established here, which each person finds useful for their health and more beneficial than any sort of medicine that we could have used. The Order was presented as a Chain of office that we placed with some small ceremony, at the neck of one of our people, charging him that day with going hunting; the next day we gave it to another and thus consequently: all who wished to try would do their best and bring the most beautiful hunt: We don't find it half bad, as well as the Indians who were with us." (Voyages of Champlain: 1613) The primary purpose of this new division of the Foundation is as a fund raiser for the nonprofit organization. The stated objective, is to provide Fellowship and Good Cheer to all its members at least once each year at an annual banquet; and, with that in mind the group adopted the motto "Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler". Membership is available to individuals who are current "Friends" of the Acadian Memorial Foundation and remains active as long as the "Friendship" is maintained. Induction is by the Grand Master at the annual meeting and includes a beautiful Certificate of unique design and a bronze Medallion of the Order. Roger is a native of Raceland, La., but a longtime resident of Houma, where he founded Bourgeois & Associates in 1984, a Louisiana licensed contractor which specializes in solving "special hazard" fire protection problems.
