We hope the tournament proved a success for you in driving trade into your pub. This issue contains lots of news from around our estate, including charity events (p3), estate development (p 4&5) as well as details of all the offers available to you throughout the next few months. We d like to take this opportunity to congratulate our licensee, Esther Thompson at the Anvil Inn in Glasgow who celebrated her 25th anniversary of working at the pub. There s not many who can claim the same achievement, but we would like to thank Esther for all her hard work and contribution towards the success of the pub. 3 Inn Touch July/August 2014 CHARITY CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME... What industry, other than the pub industry can demonstrate such generosity and selflessness in this tough economic climate? We d like to guess that there s not that many. Charity events in pubs serve as a reminder that pubs are very much part of the fabric of our community and make a meaningful contribution. See below for examples of some great charity events from across the Trust Inns estate. Of course, what helps is that when a charity event is held in a pub, everybody wins; the charities get important funds, pubs get busier and the locals get a fun event to attend. Send us your stories of any charity events that you ve held and we ll print them in the next issue. Raised 2300 Newton Arms, Dalton in Furness Raised 6700 Black Bull, Gateshead The Black Bull in Gateshead recently held a Live Band Attack in April and raised a fantastic 2,300 for local cancer charities. Favourite live bands from the area performed as well as donated prizes, tickets and CDs for listeners to win in a raffle. The event attracted both die hard fans and new customers. Keith Shevill, licensee, said The event was a great success. We re already known for holding regular live music events, so all we had to do was promote this particular event on Facebook and with posters and the pub was packed. What was great is that the customers got a great free night s entertainment and to help a worthwhile charity all at the same time! Renowned for holding successful charity events, licensee, Julie Garnett, at the Newton Arms, couldn t believe the generosity of locals when it came to her most recent event in March this year. The pub recently raised 6,700 (and counting!) to pay for a local 4 year girl, Alexis Fisher, suffering from cancer, to visit and meet her favourite Disney character, Minnie Mouse in Florida. To help raise the funds, the pub held a fun day. They had a big bouncy boxing ring donated free of charge and a tank, Shetland ponies and about singers. They also had lots of stalls and face painting and Princess Alexis wristbands for customers to purchase at 2 each. Julie said, I ve been totally overwhelmed at the response from local people and never dreamed we would get such a fantastic response. We originally only set a target of 2,500. We are planning to donate the remainder to the Manchester cancer hospital where Alexis has been receiving treatment. 4 ESTATE DEVELOPMENT Inn Touch July/August 2014 TLC AT WATERLOO Waterloo Bar, Glasgow The popular Waterloo Bar in Glasgow was looking tired and in need of some TLC, so our estates department undertook the challenge to update and improve the pub for its many customers. AFTER As a new financial year starts, so does Trust Inns plans continued plans for reinvestment and improvement of our estate. Here are just two of our more recent completed projects. The changes that took place included new external decoration and signage, new flooring within the main bar area, alterations to the pub s seating, creation of a raised seating area, total redecoration of the inside of the pub and new furnishing and lighting. The end result? Well take a look at our photos to see! Outside We re impressed and so are the pub s customers who filled the bar within hours of it reopening. A fantastic result all round! 5 Inn Touch July/August 2014 ESTATE DEVELOPMENT FACELIFT FIT FOR A LORD Lord Raglan, Walthamstow London The Lord Raglan was a typical wet led traditional local pub. To meet the changing demographics of the surrounding area and to be able to compete in a very competitive market place, the pub needed to adapt its open plan trading area to be able to offer different solutions to different customers, be able to introduce food and needed to become an altogether more attractive drinking environment for both male and female customers. BEFORE So in April this year, in conjunction with licensee, Archibald Campbell, the pub underwent a complete facelift with new external and internal decoration which included new seating, toilet refurbishments and an improved outside seating area. 6 BUILDING YOUR BUSINESS Inn Touch July/August 2014 TAKING ON AN APPRENTICE HAS HELPED MY BUSINESS ABBY Manvers Arms, Nottingham Finding hard working and dedicated staff can be difficult, so when we heard of one of our licensees using an apprenticeship scheme within his business, we wanted to find out more. The Manvers Arms in Cotgrave near Nottingham is an attractive and busy country pub offering great food, great service and a warm welcome. They currently have two apprentices working with them and are looking for a third. Licensee, Phil, is a strong advocate for the scheme which he says has helped him find two fantastic, enthusiastic and motivated members of staff who ve really made a difference to his business. The scheme, via national company, Hospitality Industry Training (HIT) offers apprenticeships to existing employees or new entrants to the industry of all ages, from 16 to 70 across all sectors and skills in the hospitality industry. Because you choose the type of apprenticeship you wish to carry out in your business, apprentices fit into their job role effectively, develop the appropriate skills and hopefully become professional enough to secure ongoing employment. What s more is that all learning and assessment is conducted on the job so you can remain focused without the interruption of off-site study. For employees/apprentices you employ, aged under 19, who meet the eligibility requirements, the programme is normally funded by the Government. You must commit to paying them the minimum wage for 30 hours per week and after 15 weeks you can apply for funding from the government for 1,500 per apprentice. But don t worry, companies like HIT help you with the application. Your apprentice may even be able to apply for a Government learner loan from the Student Loan Company. Phil says, Finding the right apprentice for your business can be quite difficult, but once you do, we ve found that the investment you make is returned many times over. Our current apprentices, Abby and Beth are invaluable members of the team and free up so much of my time to help me work on other areas of the business. Both girls are so keen to learn and I think they really appreciate the commitment we ve made to them in helping them develop their skills. We re currently looking for a third member of the team to come on board so we d definitely recommend the scheme to anyone. 7 AWARD WINNING PUB TURNS TRADE AROUND Unity Brook, Bolton Mel & John The team! When Melanie Kirby signed her lease agreement for the Unity Brook in Bolton, she quickly realised that the key to her impending success was to create a great tasting, value led food offer to attract the locals. With limited skills in the kitchen but a great eye for a good deal, Mel set about franchising her kitchen space to a fantastic new chef. And what a great move that turned out to be! Since starting there, the chef Nik Amiry has sent the takings for a normal Sunday trading into the stratosphere. Everyone from miles around raves about his quality Sunday lunches and the pub is now rated as number two on Trip Advisor for the whole of Bolton. Not bad going for just a year of trading! The great food combined with the welcoming, relaxed family focussed atmosphere and great customer service has earned Mel and her team their first award for Great Pub Dining. 15 Cask ale continues to outperform the rest of the beer market in pubs and clubs with figures from the Cask Report and the British Beer and Pub Association showing that cask ale has now overtaken keg ale to have the largest share of the UK draught ale market. Over half of all pub goers agree that stocking good quality cask ale is an important reason for visiting a pub. Around one in six pints sold in British pubs is now cask ale As the only category of drink which is not available in the off trade, drinkers have to visit the pub to sample its delights, unlike lagers and other types of beer. equating to over 8 million people quaffing cask ales in the UK. In addition real ale is no longer seen as an old man s drink with nearly 2 million drinkers now aged between 18 and 34. So after such a long time being seen as a niche product, what are the reasons for the Cask Ale Revival? Variety! The majority of cask ale drinkers prefer cask to other beers because it has a greater variety of flavours than any other beer, according to CAMRA. In these tight economic times, people are searching for simple pleasures. We ve become a bit more thoughtful about what we spend our money on and, in our food and drink choices, we re looking for tradition, quality and wholesomeness all values that cask ale can provide in spades. Cask ale drinkers visit pubs more often and spend more in them. This is good for the pub s profitability overall, as it is usually the cask ale drinker who influences the choice of what pub to visit when going out. Cask Ale has also become a strong contender to wine with food. The range and diversity of flavours of cask ale are well suited to traditional British pub dishes, such as steak pie, sausage and mash and even curry. Where the media have, at times, waged a war on the drinks industry, cask ale seems to have escaped this negative media attention. This is partly due to the nature of the drink a drink to be savoured and enjoyed in a sociable environment. Overall, more than 50% of Britain s drinkers have tried cask ale, a huge increase from a few years ago when over two thirds of drinkers said they hadn t tried it the main reason being they didn t know what it was and were afraid to try it. This proves the success of Try Before You Buy initiatives offering a small sample to a customer. A survey by the Publican Morning Advertiser found that over 95% of good cask pubs said sampling was the way to go the more you let people try the product, the more they will buy it. Fresh energetic activity, such as festivals, events and advertising can also encourage non-cask drinkers to discover the delights of cask ale. Whilst the majority of cask ale is predominantly sold in traditional or community pubs (they account for 55% of all cask ale sold), it has recently started increasing its volumes in cafe bars and smart urban venues. This is the fastest growing sector so it s important not to dismiss cask ale as not suitable for my type of bar. It has a growing appeal to younger drinkers, demonstrated also by the increase in town centre circuit bars.
