One of the most popular means of riding the snowy slopes was aboard a Flexible Flyer. The iconic wooden sled with its eagle logo, red metal runners and hardwood seat slats was famous for a revolutionary feature a flexible front-end steering bar that allowed the rider to control their course. Created in 1899 by a New Jersey manufacturer, millions of the sleds were sold up until the 1980s. January 2019 Good Luck in the New Year! When the bells ring out on New Year s Day, another year begins. On this day, the earth has come full circle and starts on its path again. Superstitious or not, many encourage luck by eating special foods on New Year s Day. People of Dutch origin celebrate the circle by including donuts in their feast to bring them good fortune. In southern parts of the U.S., some bank on black-eyed peas or red beans and gravy to do the trick. Others swear that corned beef and cabbage will bring them luck and prosperity in the coming year. In some cultures, the leaves of the cabbage represent paper money and are said to symbolize prosperity. Japanese Americans eat a set of foods called osechi ryori. Each food represents a special kind of good luck, such as good health, fertility or long life.

2 2 Trivia Whiz Classic TV Grouches As a tribute to comedian W.C. Fields, Curmudgeons Day is observed on Jan. 29, Fields birthday. Mark the occasion with a look at some classic TV grumps. Marshmallows by the Millions Dean Martin sang, It s a marshmallow world in the winter back in 1966, but this sweet and fluffy confection can be spotted year-round. Whether as a topping for hot cocoa, sandwiched in a s more, or a gooey ingredient in a variety of treats, more than 90 million pounds of marshmallows are consumed each year in the U.S. Get Ready for Winter Brrr! There s a chill in the air again! Before long the snow will fly, and you ll need to bundle up just to get the morning paper or take the dog for a walk. Winter is almost here, so be ready! Indulge in Homemade Hot Cocoa When the temperature drops, there s almost nothing more satisfying than a mug of hot cocoa. Make it extra special by preparing it yourself with these simple recipes. Homemade Hot Chocolate. In a large bowl, combine 3 1/2 cups sugar, 2 1/4 cups cocoa and 1 tablespoon salt. Whisk well to combine. Store the mixture in an airtight container. For individual servings, pour 1 cup whole milk into a microwave-safe mug and heat on high until hot. Add 2 tablespoons of the cocoa mix, and stir to dissolve. Source: Mexican Hot Chocolate. In a large saucepan, combine 4 cups whole milk, 1 1/3 cups (8 ounces) chocolate chips, 2 tablespoons sugar, 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract, 1/2 teaspoon chili powder, 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, a pinch of salt and 1 cup water. Whisking constantly, cook over medium heat until hot but not boiling (about eight minutes). Pour the mixture into four large mugs. Source: Tasty additions. There are so many ways to liven up traditional hot cocoa. Swirl in some cinnamon, or drop in some peppermint candies, which will melt in the heat. You can also experiment with coffee, caramel, raspberry syrup, hazelnut spread and peanut butter.

It s the plastic or metal piece on the end of a shoelace. Glabella. Look in the mirror for the space between your eyebrows. Griffonage. Are you guilty of this? It s illegible handwriting. Nurdle. Yes, that squiggle of toothpaste you squeeze onto your toothbrush has a name. Philtrum. You ll find this little groove between your nose and upper lip. Zarf. A familiar sight at coffee shops, this is the protective cardboard sleeve on a to-go cup of coffee or other hot beverage.
