Each state has their own school canteen policies and guidelines. Some expect high compliance with guidelines, while others allow local school management autonomy in how they make their canteens more healthy. Others recognise the need for whole of school strategies, and the need to phase in changes slowly. Incredibly there has been no recent research to check if any of this is working. The last research conducted in 2010 showed purely following canteen guidelines did not reduce obesity. Last year there was research that showed that guidelines increase costs in canteens due to more preparing food from original ingredients. There are now fears that, particularly in low socioeconomic areas, students will stop using the school canteen causing canteens to close or reduce hours. Some schools have made progress in addressing health issues, but this has been through a holistic approach that recognises solutions to obesity lie in addressing lifestyle, including physical activity. Purely focusing on canteens, which provide less than 8% of the average student s weekly nutrition, will not be successful. Policy should refocus on educating children to make healthy choices rather than banning products from canteens. 2. There should be autonomy for school management in how they implement canteen guidelines, to allow for local conditions, community priorities and canteen sustainability. 3. Policy on healthy eating should incorporate whole of school initiatives, rather than the current focus solely on school canteen menus. 4. Guidelines should be more practical, for example providing variations between secondary schools and primary schools. 5. Guidelines should allow schools discretion about more choice in menus, albeit with an increased range of healthy choices. 6. Technology, for example in the form of online ordering systems, should be used to allow parents to select choices for their primary children. 7.
