(L ) [Category 2] (Fig. 69). Original material: Japonia. Siebold s.n. (M ) [Category 2]. Japonia. Siebold s.n. (M ) [Category 2]. Japonia. Siebold s.n. (MAK S1460) [Category 2]. Japonia. [Keiske] 83 (MAK S1461) [Category 2]. Japonia. [Siebold s.n.] (MAK S1462) [Category 2]. 98) Benzoin sericeum Siebold & Zucc. in Abh. Math.-Phys. Cl. Königl. Bayer. Akad. Wiss. 4(3): 204 (1846). Present treatment: Lindera sericea (Siebold & Zucc.) Blume, Mus. Bot. 1: 324 (1851) (var. sericea). Japanese name: Ke-kuromoji. Lectotype (Ohba et al. 2013): Japonia. Siebold s.n. (L ) [Category 2] (Fig. 70). Original material: Japonia. Siebold s.n. (L ) [Category 2]. Japonia. [Sukerok s.n.] (L , lower right) [Category 2]. Japonia. Siebold s.n. (M ) [Category 2]. Japonia. [Siebold s.n.] (MAK S1464) [Category 2]. The branch in the middle of the sheet, L , is the lectotype of Lindera sericea (Siebold & Zucc.) Blume var. glabrata Blume (Ohba et al. 2013). 99) Benzoin thunbergii Siebold & Zucc. Wiss. 4(3): 204 (1846). Present treatment: Lindera umbellata Thunb., Fl. Jap.: 9, 145, tab. 21 (1784) (var. umbellata). Japanese name: Kuromoji. Type: type of Lindera umbellata Thunb. When Siebold and Zuccarini published Benzoin thunbergii they cited Sassafras thunbergii Siebold (Syn. Pl. Oeconom.: 23, 1830, nom. nud.) and Lindera umbellata Thunb. (Fl. Jap.: 9, 145, tab. 21, 1784). Benzoin thunbergii Siebold & Zucc. is therefore an illegitimate replacement name for Lindera umbellata Thunb. 100) Benzoin trilobum Siebold & Zucc. Wiss. 4(3): 202 (1846). Present treatment: Lindera triloba (Siebold & Zucc.) Blume, Mus. Bot. 1: 325 (1851). Japanese name: Shiro-moji. Lectotype (Ohba et al. 2013): Japonia. (L , this is also the original material of Sassafras officinalis) [Category 2]. Japonia. Siebold s.n. (M ) [Category 2]. Japonia. v. S. [Siebold s.n.] (MAK S1458) [Category 2]. Japonia. [Keiske] 99 (MAK S1459) [Category 2]. When Siebold and Zuccarini described Benzoin trilobum they cited Sassafras officinale
78 植物研究雑誌第 89 巻第 2 号 2014 年 4 月 Siebold (Syn. Pl. Oeconom.: 23, 1830). Sassafras officinale Siebold, however, is not a valid name because the genus Sassafras Siebold, non J. Presl, was not validly published. Benzoin trilobum Siebold & Zucc. is therefore a valid and legitimate name. Cinnamomum Schaeff. 101) Cinnamomum daphnoides Siebold & Zucc. in Abh. Math.-Phys. Cl. Königl. Bayer. Akad. Wiss. 4(3): 202 (1846). Present treatment: Cinnamomum daphnoides Siebold & Zucc. Japanese name: Maruba-nikkei, Kôchinikkei. Lectotype (designated here): Legit in Japonia. Communicavit de Siebold anno 1842 (M ) [Category 2] (Fig. 72). Original material: Japonia. Siebold s.n. Japonia. (M ) [Category 2b]. Japonia. [Siebold s.n.] (MAK S1446) [Category 2]. Japonia. [Siebold s. n.] (MAK S1447) [Category 2]. 102) Cinnamomum japonicum Siebold, Syn. Pl. Oeconom.: 23 (1830), nom. nud. Present treatment: Cinnamomum yabunikkei H. Ohba in Iwatsuki et al., Fl. Jap. 1a: 243 (2006). Japanese name: Yabu-nikkei; Kurotsusu (Siebold 1830). Original material: Japonia. Herb. Itoo Keiske 470 (L ) [Category 2]. Japonia. Siebold s.n. (L ) [Category 2]. Japonia. S [Siebold] s.n. (L ) [Category 2]. When Siebold published Cinnamomum japonicum he cited Laurus pedunculata (Thunb. 1824, not 1784). As pointed out by Wijnands (1990) Laurus pedunculata Thunb. (1784) is not a member of the Lauraceae but Hedyotis pedunculata (Thunb.) Nakai in the Rubiaceae. Laurus pedunculata appeared in Thunberg s work in 1824 without reference or description, so it is uncertain whether it applies to Laurus pedunculata (Thunb. 1784) or not. In Siebold s sense, however, Cinnamomum japonicum is evidently a member of the Lauraceae, called Yabu-nikkei or Kurotsusu in Japanese. Although several names were proposed for C. japonicum by various workers, none are acceptable in the present Code of the Nomenclature. In the recent treatment of the Japanese flora Ohba (2006) proposed the new name, Cinnamomum yabunikkei H. Ohba, for it. 103) Cinnamomum maruba Siebold, Syn. Pl. Oeconom.: 24 (1830), nom. nud. Present treatment: Cinnamomum daphnoides Siebold & Zucc. (see Ohba 2006). Japanese name: Maruba-nikkei, Kôchinikkei; Maruba-nikkei (Siebold 1830). Original material: not found. Cinnamomum maruba was validly published by Meisner in 1864, but he did not attribute the name to Siebold. It is therefore uncertain that Cinnamomum maruba Meisn. (in DC., Prodr. 15(1): 15, 1864) is based on Siebold s name or not. 104) Cinnamomum sericeum Siebold, Syn. Pl. Oeconom.: 24 (1830), nom. nud. Present treatment: Cinnamomum daphnoides Siebold & Zucc. (see Ohba 2006). Japanese name: Maruba-nikkei, Kôchinikkei; Kootsi-nikkei (Siebold 1830). Original material: not found. Cinnamomum sericeum was validly published by Lukmanoff in 1889, but he did not attribute the name to Siebold. So it is uncertain whether Cinnamomum sericeum Lukman. (Nomencl. Iconogr. Cannell. Camphr.: 19, 1889) is based on Siebold s name or not. Daphnidium Nees 105) Daphnidium lancifolium Siebold & Zucc. in Abh. Math.-Phys. Cl. Königl. Bayer. Akad. Wiss. 4(3): 207 (1846), nom. nud. Present treatment: Litsea coreana H. Lév. in Repert. Spec. Nov. Regni Veg. 10: 370 (1912). Japanese name: Kago-no-ki.
April 2014 The Journal of Japanese Botany Vol. 89 No Original material: Japonia. Siebold s.n. (L ) [Category 2]. Japonia. Siebold s.n. (L ) [Category 2]. W h e n M e i s n e r ( ) p r o p o s e d Actinodaphne lancifolia Meisn. (in DC., Prodr. 15(1): 211, 1864) he cited Daphnidium lancifolium Siebold & Zucc. and Iozoste lancifolia Blume. Iozoste lancifolia Blume is based on Siebold and Zuccarini s Daphnidium lancifolium (nom. nud.); the lectotypification is by Ohba et al. (2013). 106) Daphnidium strychnifolium Siebold & Zucc. in Abh. Math.-Phys. Cl. Königl. Bayer. Akad. Wiss. 4(3): 207 (1846), nom. nud. Present treatment: Lindera aggregata (Sims) Kosterm. in Reinwardtia 9: 98 (1974). Japanese name: Tendai-uyaku. Original material: Japonia. Siebold s.n. (L ) [Category 2]. Japonia. Siebold s.n. (L ) [Category 2]. Japonia. [Keisuke] 93 (L ) [Category 2]. Japonia. Siebold s.n. (M ) [Category 2b]. Japonia. Siebold s.n. (M ) [Category 2b]. Japonia. Siebold s.n. (M ) [Category 2b]. Daphnidium strychnifolium was validly published by Blume (Mus. Bot. 1: 352, 1851). Ohba et al. (2013) designated the specimen, L , as the lectotype. Laurus L. 107) Laurus aokasi Siebold in Siebold & Zucc. in Abh. Math.-Phys. Cl. Königl. Bayer. Akad. Wiss. 4(3): 202 (1846), in syn. sub Machilus japonica, nom. nud. Present treatment: Litsea acuminata (Blume) Sa. Kurata, Ill. Important Forest Trees Jap. 2: 48 (1968). Japanese name: Baribari-no-ki. Original material: Japonia. [Keiske] 13 (L , this is also the lectotype of Machilus longifolia Blume (Ohba et al. 2013)) [Category 2]. Litsea Lam. 108) Litsea thunbergii Siebold, Syn. Pl. Oeconom.: 24 (1830), nom. nud. Present treatment: Litsea japonica (Thunb.) Juss. in Bull. Sci. Soc. Philom. Paris 3: 73 (1801). Japanese name: Hama-biwa; Hamabiwa (Siebold 1830). Original material: Japonia. Siebold in July (10 June 1827 by the lunar calendar) (L ) [Category 2]. Machilus Nees 109) Machilus japonica Siebold & Zucc. Wiss. 4(3): 202 (1846). nom. nud. Blume, Mus. Bot. 1: 331 (1851). Present treatment: Machilus japonica Siebold & Zucc. ex Blume. Japanese name: Ao-gashi. Original material: Japonia. Siebold s.n. (L ) [Category 2]. Japonia. Siebold s.n. (M ) [Category 2]. Machilus japonica was validly published by Blume (Mus. Bot. 1: 331, 1851). Ohba et al. (2013) designated the specimen, L , as the lectotype, but it was misprinted as L ) Machilus thunbergii Siebold & Zucc. Wiss. 4(3): 202 (1846). Present treatment: Machilus thunbergii Siebold & Zucc. Japanese name: Tabu, Tabuno-ki; Tamu no ki (Kaempfer 1712), Tamu no Ki (Thunberg 1784). Lectotype (designated here): Japan. (Thunberg s.n., UPS-Herb. Thunberg no. 9824). Original material: Japonia. [Bürger ex Kumakichi] 14 Apr by the lunar calendar (L , this is also original material of Persea japonica) [Category 2] (Fig. 73). Japonia. Siebold s.n. (M ) [Category 2b]. Japonia. Siebold s.n. (M ) [Category 2b]. Japonia. [Siebold s.n.] (MAK S1563) [Category 2]. Machilus thunbergii was first reported from Japan by Thunberg under the name Laurus indica L. in his Flora Japonica (1784, p. 173).
80 植物研究雑誌第 89 巻第 2 号 2014 年 4 月 Thunberg (1784) wrote foliis venosis lanceolatis perennantibus, ramulis tuberculatis, floribus racemosis... without citation of specimens or illustration. There are three specimens identified as Laurus indica in Thunberg s collection (UPS, Herb. Thunberg nos ) without indication of Siebold and Zuccarini s study. Two of them, nos and 9824, are Machilus thunbergii and one, no. 9825, is not. We designate no as the lectotype. The determination by Zuccarini Machilus thunbergii S. & Z. and Laurus indica Thbg. on the specimen, L , is regarded as his recognition of the species, and this specimen agrees with Thunberg s description. Persea Mill. 111) Persea japonica Siebold in Abh. Math.- Phys. Cl. Königl. Bayer. Akad. Wiss. 4(3): 202 (1846), in syn. sub Machilus thunbergii, nom. nud. Present treatment: Machilus thunbergii Siebold & Zucc. Japanese name: Tabu, Tabuno-ki. Original material: Japonia. Siebold s.n. (L , this is also the lectotype of Machilus thunbergii) [Category 2]. Sassafras J. Presl 112) Sassafras officinale Siebold, Syn. Pl. Oeconom.: 23 (1830), nom. nud., non Nees & Eberm. (1819), as officinalis. Present treatment: Lindera triloba (Siebold & Zucc.) Blume in Mus. Bot. 1: 324 (1851). Japanese name: Shiromoji; Siromotsi (Siebold 1830). Original material: Japonia. Siebold s.n. (L is the lectotype of Benzoin trilobum) [Category 2]. Japonia. Siebold s.n. (L ) [Category 2]. Japonia. Siebold s.n. (L ) [Category 2]. Sassafras officinale was first proposed by Persoon under the name Laurus sassafras L. in his Synopsis Plantarum, vol. 1 (1805, p. 450). But as mentioned under Benzoin trilobum (p. 18) the name Sassafras officinalis Siebold is invalid. 113) Sassafras thunbergii Siebold, Syn. Pl. Oeconom.: 23 (1830), nom. nud. Present treatment: Lindera umbellata Thunb., Fl. Jap.: 9, 145, tab. 21 (1784) (var. umbellata). Japanese name: Kuromoji; Kuromotsi (Siebold 1830). Original material: Japonia. When Siebold published Sassafras thunbergii he cited Lindera umbellata without description or diagnosis in Thunberg s paper of 1824, not in Thunberg s Flora Japonica in Trochodendraceae Trochodendron Siebold & Zucc., Fl. Jap. 1: 83 (1835); in Abh. Math.-Phys. Cl. Königl. Bayer. Akad. Wiss. 4(2): 185 (1845). Type: Trochodendron aralioides Siebold & Zucc. Present treatment: Cercidiphyllum Siebold & Zucc. Cercidiphyllum japonicum Siebold & Zucc. was validly published by Miquel in Miquel cited four specimens in L, including the original material (L ), designated as the lectotype by Ohba and Akiyama (2012). Ranunculaceae Aconitum L. 116) Aconitum chinense Siebold in Siebold & Zucc. in Abh. Math.-Phys. Cl. Königl. Bayer. Akad. Wiss. 4(2): 183 (1845), non Paxton (1838). Present treatment: Aconitum chinense Paxton in Paxton s Mag. Bot. 5: table of Aconitum chinense (1838). Japanese name: Kara-torikabudo. Lectotype (designated here): Japan. (Thunberg s.n., UPS-Herb. In Japonia legit Bürger et Communicavit d. Siebold, Herb. Zuccarinii (M ) [Category 2b]. Siebold and Zuccarini (1845) listed two species of Aconitum, A. chinense Siebold and A. japonicum Thunb. Aconitum chinense was first reported from Japan by Thunberg under the name Aconitum napellus L. in his Flora Japonica (1784, p. 231). Thunberg (1784) wrote folium laciniis linearibus superne latioribus linea exaratis without citation of a specimen or an illustration. There are two specimens identified as Aconitum napellus in Thunberg s collection (UPS, Herb. Thunberg nos and
82 植物研究雑誌第 89 巻第 2 号 2014 年 4 月 12822). We designate no as the lectotype. The determination by Siebold Aconitum chinense Sieb. on the specimen, MAK S0002, is regarded as Siebold s recognition of A. chinense. The specimen agrees with Thunberg s description. It consists of a plant that was cultivated in the Botanical Garden, Dejima, Nagasaki, by Siebold (excluding the lower left flowering branch of A. pterocaule). Paxton (1838) published Aconitum chinense Siebold as a new species. He wrote, without citation of Siebold s work, that the illustration was of a cultivated plant introduced by Siebold from China. We therefore designate the illustration in the protologue (Paxton s Mag. Bot. 5: table of Aconitum chinense, 1838) as the lectotype of Aconitum chinense Paxton. Anemonopsis Siebold & Zucc. in Abh. (L ) (Fig. 92). Although Stearn (2002) wrote Epimedium sagittatum (Siebold & Zucc.) Maxim.... Type: Japan, cult. St. Petersburg (holotype LE), this specimen is not listed in Catalogue of thetype Specimens of East-Asian Vascular Plants in the Herbarium of the Komarov Botanical Institute (LE) (Grubov 2004). Epimedium sagittatum was published by Maximowicz (in Bull. Acad. Imp. Sci. St.- Pétersb. 23: 309, 1877) as a new combination based on Aceranthus sagittatus Siebold & Zucc. Maximowicz cited neither specimen nor illustration, so Stearn s citation of the type, i.e., holotype, is to be corrected (ICBN Art. 9.9). The specimen cited by Stearn as a holotype is however from a plant cultivated in St. Petersburg, but derived from Japan. There is no evidence that Siebold and Zuccarini examined this specimen before they published Aceranthus sagittatus in Specimens annotated Epimedium ikari S. or Epimedium ikarisoo S. by Siebold or イカリソウ [Ikari-sō in Japanese, which refer to Epimedium sagittatum] or 淫羊藿 [in Chinese, also meaning Epimedium sagittatum] are deposited in L and MAK, but no original material with annotation Aceranthus sagittatus by Siebold or Zuccarini is found in L, M, and MAK. A specimen collected by Bürger in Japan (L ) that represents the protologue well, which we here designate as a neotype. The neotype specimen agrees with the original description by Siebold and Zuccarini. A specimen collected by Siebold (L ) [Japonia.
