3 A journey of imagination 想像の旅 "Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand - Albert Einstein Children were talking about the jungle during their free time in the Holiday Program. Their conversation was quite interesting! Akiko-Sensei: What would you bring when you explore the jungle? A boy: 100 bento lunches and a crown because, when I wear the crown, all of the animals will bow down in front of me. I am the King of the jungle! Everyone: That's a good idea!. Jo: I would bring my ipad and a blanket. Kaisei: Pillow, flash light, water bottle, radio and also, don't forget your house keys! We need to go back home after our trip! Surely, it seems to be a fun jungle trip! The power of magical thinking (imagination) improves children s Cognitive Development, as what Einstein have once said.

4 A journey of imagination 想像の旅 想像力は知識よりも大切だ 知識とは物事に対して限定的に知っているだけに すぎない 想像力とは世界中のことを巻き込み繋ぎながら物事を理解をすること だ アルバート アインシュタイン ホリデープログラムの自由時間に子どもたちとジャングルの話をしました これがとても面白かったんです アキコ先生 ジャングルに行くとして 何を持って行く ある男の子 お弁当100個と 王冠 王冠をかぶっていたらジャングルの動物たちは僕の前に ひれ伏すんだよ 僕はキングだから みんな それいい考えだね じょう君 i パッドと毛布 かいせい君 まくらと懐中電灯 それから水筒と ラジオも必要だね あーそれと鍵を忘れない ようにしないと お家に入れなくなる 本当に面白いジャングル探検になりそうです 空想の世界 想像力 の力は 子供の認知発達を助けます まさにアインシュタイン博士の言う世界中のことを巻き込み繋ぎながら物事を理解する力ですね

5 Supplementary work サプリメンタルワーク Our goal for the children is to enhance their environment by providing various activities to develop their cognitive skills. Aside from the homework they receive from school, supplementary work is given by our CDC teachers once they have completed their homework. The content of the supplementary work includes Math, Reading and Grammar worksheets and also word searches and crossword Puzzles that the children really enjoy. The ultimate purpose of supplementary work is to provide students opportunity to reinforce their skills, this type of work does not necessarily involve worksheet and writing all of the time. Simple activities or games played in the classroom with an educational content base are considered supplementary work in our After School Program. Please let us know if there are specific subject areas you would like us to work with your child on.

7 Onna Elementary School International Class 恩納小学校国際教室 Did you know there is an International Classroom at Onna Elementary School? Each day, foreign children at Onna Elementary School join the international classroom under the guidance of the international classroom lead teacher, Naoki Tanahara. At Onna Elementary school, all subjects, with the exception of English, are taught in Japanese by the children s homeroom class teacher, and based on his or her need, the children are schedule to go to the International classroom to content area support from OIST s Elementary English Teacher, Reiko Matsune, Naoki Tanahara, or other classroom volunteers. Sometimes Reiko-Sensei will join the international children in his or her homeroom class to provide classroom one on one or small group support to the international children within their classrooms. To enhance the children s English skills, Reiko-Sensei also creates supplemental English lessons and activities for the International Classroom children. This program started in 2012, and we have seen it grow from 1 child to 8. 8 Onna Elementary School International Class 恩納小学校国際教室 恩納小学校の国際教室をご存知でしょうか 恩納小学校に通う外 国から来た子供たちが棚原直樹先生指導の国際教室で学習の補助 を受けています 恩納小学校では英語以外の教科は日本語で各クラス担任の先生が 授業をされていますが 言語的な補助が必要な科目について 棚 原直樹先生とボランティアの方々 OISTからレイコマツネ先生が 補習を行っています レイコ先生は場合によって各教室で外国か ら来た子供たちの小グループ又は個別に科目の理解を補助します 国際教室の子供たちの英語強化のための教材をレイコ先生も準備 しています この国際教室プログラムは2012年に始まり開始 当初は一人だった生徒が今は8人になっています 恩納小学校国際教室についてご質問等ありましたら 学童のレイ コマツネまでご連絡ください

9 Numbers かず Kindergarten children have started their Early Math Program. The following are the skills included: * Sensitize children to numbers * Explore grouping * Recognition of numbers supports the development of other number skills such as counting. Also it develops more sophisticated abilities like addition(1 digit), tally marks and the graph chart. 10 ``Are you staying in or leaving Okinawa for the Winter Holidays?`` Winter Holidays Vacation 53% 47% Staying in Okinawa Leaving Okinawa When asked about their plans for the winter holidays, nine out of nineteen students said they will be staying in the island, and the other half will be spending their vacation elsewhere. The ten students who are leaving the island for the holidays are going to places in mainland Japan, such as Tokyo, Ibaraki and Niigata; while other students are heading to a totally different country. Although the rest of the students will be staying in Okinawa, they have so many funfilled activities planned for them and their families during the holidays. We hope you will enjoy your winter break and have a happy new year!

12 December Holiday Program Bowling Field Trip ホリデープログラムハイライト 遠足 In the beginning, some of the students were not able to hold the ball well but, they eventually threw the ball properly as the games progressed. After bowling, we went to Kurashiki Dam Park to have a picnic. There, the children had a chance to run and play freely, in which they had a wonderful time. Fortunately, on our way back to OIST and not during our trip, it begun to rain! ボーリング 初めは上手くボールを持てなかった人 も2ゲーム目になると 投げ方も上手になってスコ アを気にする余裕も出ていました 倉敷ダム公園 ではお弁当を食べて 走り回って鬼ごっこをしたり 楽しく過ごせました 幸運なことに帰途についてか ら雨が降ってきました

13 Arts & Crafts Center 工作コーナー The Afterschool teachers have made an Arts and Crafts Center in the classroom for our young artists. Children can start creating whatever comes upon her/his mind in their free time. Arts and Crafts enhances a child's imagination, self-expression, individual craftsmanship as well as strengthening their academic and life skills. Please donate anything you have at home that children can use for their crafts such as boxes, ribbons, wrapping paper, plastic cups, toilet/kitchen rolls or anything else that you do not plan to use any longer. We are excited to see what children will create!
