3 2018 TEDAKO GRADUATION The CDC proudly announces the graduation of 20 children from our program on March 30th. Asahi, Dan, Eiji, Ibuki, Leo, Leon, Lucas, Mae, Rui and Souichi will go to elementary school. Bach, Bilge, Cecilia, Kiichiro, Lam, Marcos, Marlena, Michael, Mohamad and Natsumi will go to kindergarten. Most of these children will be attending local Japanese Kindergartens and Elementary Schools, one child will attend Amicus International school.we wish all the best at their new schools and will miss them very much. We feel so proud of their growth and accomplishments since they joined Tedako. Some of them have been with us for over 5 years, they each have a special place in our heart.

4 TEDDY BEAR PICNIC Spring is finally here and we're planning to have a picnic! On Tuesday April 10th we will have our class photos taken and a picnic with our favorite teddy bear! A bento and picnic/leisure sheet is required for this event. (There will be no school lunch served on the day of the picnic, again, no school lunch on April 10, 2018)

5 CLASS PICTURES On the morning of April 10, we will take class pictures. Please have your child at school by 9:30 dressed in his or her red OIST T-Shirt. Every family will receive a digital copy of the class picture. FORMS UPDATE We are updating our emergency contact records. Please submit your emergency contact and pick up authorization by April 13. 6 TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK The teachers at Tedako are fabulous and parents often express an interest in doing something special to show appreciation for all the hard work they do for our children. This year, Teacher s Appreciation Week will be from May 28 June 1. PATO is collaborating with the CDC to plan a very special week to shower the teachers with love and appreciation. If you would like to contribute to Teacher s Appreciation Week, PATO is looking for volunteers to help out with activities during the week of May 28th. You can also volunteer by being part of the planning committee, donating prepared food and drinks, or by giving a donation. All donations will go towards purchasing items for Teacher s Appreciation Week, such as food and gift cards for the teachers. In the next few weeks, you will be receiving an with a list of the CDC teachers so that you can write a personal message to your child s teachers. 7 BCG VACCINE OR TB FREE CERTIFICATE The BCG vaccine is part of the mandatory vaccination schedule in Japan, and because the OIST community travels out of the country frequently, it was determined by the CDC Governing Board that if a child does not have the BCG vaccine, the CDC requires a negative TB certificate submitted to Tedako office twice a year. If your child is over 6 months, please take him or her to receive the BCG vaccine or if you do not plan on getting the BCG vaccination, a TB free certificate will be required for continued enrollment. A skin test is available at Onna Clinic and costs 1500 yen. If you need assistance making an appointment please contact the OIST Health Center at

8 T-SHIRT ORDER As a part of the 2017 registration fee, each child will receive a new OIST T- Shirt. Please return the order forms to your classroom teacher. Available sizes are from Sample sizes are available in the office. PARENT LUNCH EVENT Have you ever wondered what the CDC school lunch tastes like? On Monday May 10, the CDC will organize a School Lunch Tasting for Parents. Please REGISTER by Wednesday, April 25 at This will also be a good opportunity to meet and socialize with CDC Acting Director, Kanako Nishimura, and other Tedako Preschool Parents.

9 WELCOME OLGA! Artsiomenka Volha is the Belarus translation of my original Russian name Olga. I will be working as a teacher assistant in Nuuji/Kafuu and Umusan classes at the CDC. I am from Belarus but I lived in Italy for nineteen years. My broad working experiences includes childcare, which I really enjoy. Natural landscapes and historical places are my passions, as well as discussing books and movies with friends. Working with the CDC children and meeting their parents will be a real pleasure.

10 KUKURU CLASS ENJOYES OSANPO (TAKE A WALK) Spring is here and the weather is getting warmer so the Kukuru class will enjoy osanpo (take a walk in Japanese) twice daily. The children enjoy riding in the stroller all around our beautiful OIST campus. They feel the wind on their face, look at the water and make friends with the birds. When they arrive at their destination, the teachers take them out of the stroller and they enjoy playing on the grass and sand. Our older children also enjoy riding in toy cars all around our playground.

11 TODDLER CLASS ENJOY SAND PLAY The toddler children love to play with sand. They love to make sand mountains and dig holes. By playing with sand the children are able to train their grip strength and fine motor skills. Creativity and imagination are also stimulated by using a variety of tools. While the children are playing in the sand, they have an opportunity to learn social skills as well, such as sharing and waiting for their turn.

12 KUGANI OUTSIDE PLAY Children love to play outdoors! Recently, a popular activity in the class is making paper airplanes. We introduced how to make paper airplanes in an earlier activity and ever since then, they have loved to make them. Some of the children can make these without the help of teachers. When they see some of their friends struggling to make a paper airplane, they are there to lend a hand, to help in a caring thoughtful way and teach their friends. When they master how to make an airplane, they are trying to figure out ways to make it fly further. Another popular outside activity is playing with bubbles. They like to experiment by trying to stretch and make longer bubbles, or by blowing slowly and gently so that they can create bigger bubbles. Also, the children love to compete with one another by seeing who can catch the most bubbles. Outside playtime is always as vibrant as indoor playtime.

13 LEARNING SHAPES In our 3 year old classes we are always thinking about new ways to explore themes and finding new learning materials to motivate our children.what better material than ice cream sticks to practice spelling words and making shapes! At circle time, we show children ice cream sticks and ask: If I have 3 sticks, which shape can I make? to which they reply: triangle! or If I have 4 sticks, which shape can I make? and they say square. This circle time practice is followed by activity time, when children sit at the tables and create different shapes, like triangles, squares, rectangles and or a representation of something they have seen, such a house or a car. Then they attempt to form the letters of their names, which represents a great opportunity to improve their pre-writing skills and learn how to spell their names. One of the most interesting shapes for the kids is the star, this shape takes 10 sticks, so we count the sticks and make it together, they love to see how a star shape is made!

14 SHINKA PROBLEM SOLVING Problem solving activities are done throughout the year in the Shinka class. Acquiring these skills at an early age is a great way for the children to understand and be able to sort out problems when they arise, as well as manage their emotions. They also teach the children how to not just make, but keep friends! From sharing to cleaning up, to learning what to ask or do when they run out of glue, the kids will encounter problems both big and small that they will need to learn how to solve. When the children encounter a problem, we like to ask them questions rather than just solving the problem for them. The first thing we need to is to find out exactly what the problem is. Once that has been determined we ask the children brainstorming questions to help them figure out what they can do to solve their problem, what they have tried and whether or not their ideas worked. From this point we offer advice and encourage the children to choose and test out new ways to solve their problems. Later we check in with the kids and see if they were able to solve their problem, or if they need more support. The important thing to remember is that this is a learning process, it won't happen overnight, and we do not expect it to. When the kids are able to solve a problem, whether it be a personal problem with a friend or a problem they may encounter during play, the kids are quick to tell us what happened. A big one that seems to make them feel really proud is "I shared". You can see in their eyes how proud they are about it. To an adult it may not seem like a big deal, but sharing is one of the more difficult skills for a child to gain. Like we say "Sharing is Caring"
