PIN WORM TEST Before we can play in water, every child must have a pinworm test. We will send kits home on Tuesday May 8 th. Please return them on the 10 th.

4 WATER PLAY IS ON THE WAY! We will begin water play on June 4th. Children can play in water, sprinklers, water tables each day they are with us. Children can only play in pools once we have received negative pin worm test results, so please be sure to submit the pin worm test by the requested date since it takes 2 weeks for us to receive the test results. We ask that you send your child to school with sunscreen on, and in clothes that can be wet or a swimsuit. On these days, please bring a small towel, a plastic bag for wet clothes, and two extra changes of clothes in their school bags. Please let teachers know if your child is ill or you do not want your child to participate in water paly when you drop off in the morning. We will not allow children to participate if he or she has a stomach ache, diarrhea, red eyes, any cold symptoms, headache, open sores, or a slight fever and ask that any visible warts be removed.

5 KUKURU CLASS TUMMY TIME FUN Our littlest ones in the Kukuru class are making the most of their tummy time daily. Exercising to strengthen arm and neck muscles are a big part of a baby`s daily routine. This helps further development such as rolling over and sitting.

6 TODDLER CLASS SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING Both of these skills involve life-long learning. Toddlers learn social skills through observing the people in their lives. They practice these social skills by imitating and interacting with their peers during play and role play. Play offers children opportunities to practice turn taking, sharing, asking/answering questions, and many of the other skills we use to communicate with others. Through role play they explore concepts of different social settings and roles. For example by playing kitchen, as the chief they learn to ask what the other child wants and how to serve the food, while the other child learns how to request what they want, in a socially acceptable manner as defined through their play.

7 A toddler is going through many changes. While their ability to communicate is still limited, they have gained better control of their gross motor skills and often express their emotions that way, running when they are happy or excited, pushing when angry or flopping down on the floor when they do not want to do something. They start to learn that there are no positive or negative feelings, and that everyone has them. How we express them, deal with them and let them affect us is important, as this is why we are having those emotions. One of the major transitions is from crying and screaming when something has happened that we do not like, to explaining what has happened so that a situation can be resolved.

8 NUUJI &KAFUU CLASS STORY TIME Spring is here and in our 3 year old classes, our children have been exploring the changes that this season brings. Kiho sensei prepared an activity for story time which included reading a book and reflecting about how nature changes around us. After listening to the story, Nuuji and Kafuu classes had the opportunity to participate in a sensory experience related to what they learned from the book. The children touched fresh leaves, smelled flowers split leaves while using the same vocabulary the book provided to describe the texture, smell and color of nature in the spring. Story time has never been so hands on!

9 KUGANI CLASS DRAMATIC PLAY The children in the Kugani Class are rich in imagination, therefore they are masters at "pretend play". The children love to make pretend play spaces for themselves, so the classroom drama center is set up in a way that enhances their imagination and children can easily create special world for themselves.the children create their own pretend play areas in various places every day, as they are regarded as houses, shops, sometimes hospitals and so on. Also, not only inside, but during outside play time they enjoy a wide range of "pretend play" using their imagination. The children had fun during the cooking activity. They learned about the ingredients for muffins and how to measure, pour, and mix the ingredients to make the actual muffins. "Mix this way" all children cooperated with friends and enjoyed the cooking activity. Some children were also sharing their dinner and cooking experiences they have at home with their families. After the cooking experience, we enjoyed a picnic during snack time at the courtyard near Jimmy s.

10 SHINKA CLASS OUTDOOR PLAYTIME Outdoor playtime is one of the Shinka Classes' favorite times of the day. As soon as the teachers announce that it is time to go outside, the children happily get ready and line up to start new adventures, continue old projects or work on new ones, hunt for insects, climb trees, and so much more. Any chance that we have to take the kids out, we do. On rainy days we like to walk through the community village and up to OIST to check on tadpoles, newts, and water striders. It is great for the children to have and experience such real world discoveries.

11 We could easily stay in the classroom and use media or books to teach about these things, but it is so much more beneficial and fun to get the kids out exercising (strengthening their large motor skills), talking with their friends as they walk (improving their language and social emotional skills), and discovering all the treasures that are right outside (having early science experiences). Outdoor play is also a great way for children to use their imaginations. They can be whoever and do whatever they can think of during unstructured outdoor playtime. So, be sure to stop by the playground and see what kind of adventures your children are having! Below are two great articles dealing with outdoor play. 12 TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK IS ALMOST HERE! This year, Teacher Appreciation Week will be from May 28 June 1. PATO is collaborating with the CDC to plan a very special week to shower the teachers with love and appreciation. Monday, May 28: Catered Lunch Tuesday, May 29: Fresh Fruit Smoothies Wednesday, May 30: Potluck Brunch Thursday, May 31: Coffee, Tea, and Sweets Friday, June 1: 15 Minute Massage PATO is looking for volunteers to help out with any of these activities during the week of May 28th. You can volunteer by helping to setup or clean up on any day during the week or bringing prepared food and drinks Tuesday through Thursday. If you would like to volunteer, please send an to oist.pato.group@gmail.com. If you would like to make a donation to help cover the cost of purchasing items for Teacher Appreciation Week, such as food and gift cards for the teachers, please give your donation to Junko Shimabukuro at the CDC.
