SAVE THE DATE! Birthday Parties Field Trips 6/22(Fri.)14:50~ We will celebrate children with June birthdays. Shinka: Xystus Kidsland 6/27(Wed) Kafuu: 6/13(Wed) All family members and friends are welcomed to join! Kugani: 6/6(Wed) Nuuji: 6/20(Wed)

JAPANESE CIRCLE TIME OBSERVATION Our younger children will be nervous to see parents and strangers in their classroom, so we put up special curtains for parents to hide behind and watch from in the hallway. Please enter and exit by using the back entrance of the CDC since the children will be going outside after the observations. It may cause them anxiety if they see you. For children over the age of 3, we invite parents into their classroom to watch and participate in Japanese circle time. Churasan June 6 (Wed) 9:45-10:00 Kanasan June 4 (Mon) 9:45-10:00 Umusan June 7 (Thu) 9:45-10:00 Nuuji June 4 (Mon) 9:30-10:00 Kafuu June 5 (Tue) 9:30-10:00 Kugani June 8 (Fri) 9:30-10:00 Shinka June 7 (Thu) 9:30-10:00 (There is no class observation for Kukuru Class.)

WATER PLAY IS ON THE WAY! We will begin water play on Monday, June 4th. Children can play with water, sprinklers, and water tables everyday. Each class also has a designated pool activity day listed below. Monday: Tuesday: Wednesday: Thursday: Friday: Sprinkler for ALL. Kugani, kanasan Shinka, Umusan Kafuu, Nuuji Churasan We ask that you send your child to school with sunscreen on, and in clothes that can get wet or a swimsuit. On these days, please bring a small towel, a plastic bag for wet clothes, and two extra changes of clothes in their school bags. Please let teachers know if your child is ill, or you do not want your child to participate in water paly when you drop off in the morning. We will not allow children to participate if they have a stomach ache, diarrhea, red eyes, any cold symptoms, headache, open sores, or a slight fever. We also ask that any visible water warts be removed.

WELCOME HIROE! Ms. Matsuda Hiroe who joined CDC in May, will become Nuuji class teacher from June. She is already in the class to support and all the kids are already getting attached to her. She is a veteran preschool teacher and has ten years experience working at CDC in Kadena Air Base. Please welcome Hiroe to our school! Message from Hiroe I'm Hiroe Matsuda. I'm a two boys mom and enjoy being a mom. I love working in international environment. So I'm very exited working in CDC. I'd like to give children a lot of love!

KUKURU CLASS BABIES LOVE DANCING WITH MUSIC When the Kukuru teachers start to sing a song the babies begin clapping their hands, moving their bodies, and touching their heads. "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes," "Row Row RowYour Boat," and "Buzz, Buzz, Buzz" (Bunn Bunn Bunn) seem to be some of their favorite songs. Music encourages the babies to learn new vocabulary and movements while their playing.

TODDLER CLASS FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS In the toddler classes, the children are continuously learning to listen and follow directions. These skills and numerous provided opportunities aid them in developing language skills, learning self-help proficiencies, and building their self-confidence. The younger toddlers are working on simple two to three word directions such as shoes up please or bye-bye shoes, while some of the older toddlers are learning simple two and three step directions like please take off your shoes and put them away in both English and Japanese languages. Teachers make sure to use enthusiastic and respectful tones with the children to encourage them and acknowledge their efforts. Through positive guidance the toddlers are able to recognize expectations, identify daily routines, and gain some independence by learning selfhelp skills. It is normal for toddlers to test boundaries, but through positive guidance, redirection, a lot of patience, and unconditional love they learn to follow directions in time.

KAFUU AND NUUJI CLASSES WORK ON THEIR CUTTING SKILLS A child who is following the appropriate developmental track should start cutting between the ages of 2-3 years old. Cutting allows a child to build up the tiny muscles in the palm of their hand with the continuous open and close of the hand. These muscles are also used for writing, painting, and gripping things like a toothbrush, spoon or fork, and even pulling up pants. In Kafuu and Nuuji classes, we plan activities that involve cutting skills or other tasks associated to cutting, for instance, we encourage our students to use plastic tweezers to work on their iron beads projects, always supervising that they are using this instrument correctly and stimulating the opening and closing of their hand.

One of our themes for this month was insects so we designed an activity related this topic, involving practicing their cutting skills, in these photos we can observe how the children are using bilateral coordination, using both sides of the body at the same time when cutting a figure. We also noticed how our children held the paper with one hand (and continuously turned it) while the other hand was opening and closing the scissors and moving forward to cut. With these activities, not only our children focus on their general cutting skills but also they start preparing for other daily life activities, like zipping up a coat or pants, washing dishes, and opening an envelope.

KUGANI ART The Children from the Kugani class love art. The children are free to use any materials in the art center to create paintings, drawings, and other creative expression during their center time activities. Art is definitely one of the children's favorite activities. The opportunities are endless for the children to express their mood and feelings through art form. This month, we have one of the big events at CDC, the Art Exhibit. The children from the Kugani class worked hard creating many different projects.

This year's theme is "Upcycle: Exhibits from around the world made from recycled materials" and our class chose "New Zealand, Ireland, Egypt, and Peru". Every piece of work is very ingenious, and the individuality of the children is overflowing. They drew shapes and used scissors to cut the shapes. The children fully utilized their fine motor abilities to create these pieces. During the creation of artwork for this exhibition, the children had so much fun painting with bare hands without using brushes, and incorporating play into the art. In the group project, the Kugani class demonstrated the power of teamwork and cooperated with each other until the end. Please enjoy the wonderful works of children at the CDC art exhibition.

OKINAWA ZOO Last month the Kugani class went to the Okinawa Zoo. This field trip is one of the most anticipated and fun-filled trips of the year! The children always enjoy learning about, drawing, and pretending to be animals, but actually getting out there to see (and smell them) up close was a whole other great experience for them. The children saw elephants, monkeys, kangaroos, crocodiles and many other animals. They were all very excited and saying "cute!" while looking at the animals. After seeing all the animals, the children enjoyed a nice picnic lunch at the shaded picnic area while talking about the animals they had seen.

SHINKA ART Art is an one of the best forms of selfexpression. The Shinka Class love drawing, coloring, and especially painting! Over the past few months spring has brought us colorful flowers, insects, and amphibians. Aside from going out and exploring natures gifts, the children in the Shinka class really enjoy drawing, painting, and making crafts related to what they've seen outdoors. They've been learning about dinosaurs, insects, and spring. The classroom is getting more colorful by the day with all the new art! Shinka class loves being able to do open-ended art activities.

It gives them the freedom to create how they want to while allowing their imaginations to run wild. By leaving the crafts open-ended, our children can really express themselves through their art! Instead of asking children to make a dinosaur like ours, we want them to make their own version of dinosaurs, any way they like! Prior to the activities we teach about the topic to help give ideas and get their brains going. When it is craft time the children then create from within! It's amazing to watch them create art and show it off to each other! The Shinka class made these wonderful bees and suns last month. Each one is different and unique in its own special way We also can't wait for you to check out all of the amazing art the children created for the upcoming art exhibit. Prepare to be amazed!

Last Month the Shinka Class took a trip down to the Renaissance Hotel. This was the first time for us to visit the hotel, but it won't be the last time! The children had an amazing time watching and feeding an assortment of animals. When we first walked through the doors into the lobby the children were greeted by a colorful and excited Macaw. The children were surprised to see it! Many of them kept saying "it's real, it's real". Most of the kids have only seen this bird in books or movies. SHINKA FIELD TRIP After making our way through the lobby, the children went outside and were treated to a wonderful surprise, manta rays and dolphins! There was a school of manta rays swimming around in the water. There were 2 large ones, which were quickly dubbed as "mommy and daddy"! The animal feeding was a wonderful experience for the children, and we look forward to going back to visit the animals again!

BI-ANNUAL HEALTH CHECK UP We have scheduled an upcoming health screening with Dr. Shoko Okamoto from Yokatsu Hospital. It will be 2:00 pm here at Tedako on Tuesday, June 5th. Please make sure to update your child`s immunization records and submit a copy of your child`s shot record to the CDC office staff with any necessary updates/changes. Thank you in advance for your support and cooperation.
