Yalumba Galway Shiraz or Yalumba Christobels Yalumba have been making Galway for more than 60 years and this is one of their best vintages ever. For the record Galway was named after L.T. Col. Sir Henry L. Galway KLMG, DSL, who was a Governor of South Australia and regular visitor to Yalumba. We are sure he would appreciate this vintage with its intense Shiraz flavours and complex American Oak barrel characters. The Hill Smith family own Yalumba and this wine is named after Christobel Hill Smith who was an integral part of the family for 60 years. She was a dashing, lively and crisp blend just like her wine. Watershed Shades Sauvignon Blanc Semillon Marvellous stuff this, we love them all the Merlot, Unwooded Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon the whole family. The wine judges and journalists agree particularly James Halliday. When we look at a group like this a favourite usually emerges but really you should mix a dozen up and cook up a storm. Bob is no stranger to the wine industry starting Rosemount Wines in 1974 and taking it to the top of the tree when it merged with Southcorp in 2001 and was taken over by Fosters in Oatley wines is based in Mudgee at the old Craigmore and Montrose Wineries. Bob s team at Oatley are sourcing their grapes from the best areas Shiraz from Barossa, Cabernet Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc Semillon from Western Australia and of course his favourite Chardonnay - Mudgee Well Done Evans & Tate Evans & Tate Classic Dry White Margaret River has only been around as a wine region since the late 1960s, but it is very famous now producing wines of elegance, intensity and power. John Evans and John Tate got together in 1971 and have been very successful with their Margaret River wines. This wine is all about drinking now, good value at its normal price, terrific value at a Liquor Legends price. The wine is 54% Semillon and 36% Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Chardonnay. Winemaker Richard Rowe has got it right, this is perfect lunch wine. He must like a long lunch as the Classic Red leans towards lunch too. Great year for WA Wines Houghton White Classic We were chatting to one of Australia s leading wine retailers (we cannot reveal his name as he works for a rival, but we can tell you he is in Queensland) and he was raving about the whites from Western Australia vintage. In particular he was going off about the Houghton White Classic because of its high percentage of Chenin Blanc. He believes it will cellar for 5 to 10 years rewarding your patience with a wine similar to a French Vouvray (these can be drunk quite old tasting young with honey and acid structure). At this price buy a case for the cellar and two to drink now A real value for money range Wyndham Estate Bin 555 George Wyndham planted the first vineyard in the Hunter Valley NSW in 1830 and within a few short years was gaining rave reviews and exporting to England. So George was famous for starting the Hunter Valley Wine industry, these days the wines named in his honour are famous for offering tremendous value for money. They also show their varietal characteristics in a very soft way without any harshness. Thus for years we have been recommending them to new wine drinkers as ideal for their grape variety education. BUY Just a lovely Wine! Mad Fish Premium White This white is 93% Chardonnay, 4% Semillon and 3% Sauvignon Blanc. It certainly is a premium product with the Chardonnay flavours jumping out of the glass. No oak was used so the nose is peaches and melon. The palate is a complex combination of fruit flavours and it finishes with a clean acid thrust. Just love it. 2

3 BUY Taste the citrus pineapple and even kiwi fruit Nobilo Sauvignon Blanc Nobilo is priced a little below the other Marlboroughs and we are not sure why. It has all the best characteristics - bursting with ripe passionfruit, lemon and peach scents, balanced acidity a lovely combination of freshness and flavour. At this price we suggest you stock up! Remember drink your Marlborough Sauvies as cold as you wish, the flavours will not be affected. BUY Quality & Price! Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc Oyster Bay is now the biggest selling wine at Liquor Legends with our hundreds of stores in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. Who would have thought a few years ago that the best seller would be a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc which normally sells for around 20 and not a 6 or 7 Australian Chardonnay. It is quite a success story and we are glad to be part of it, the wine shows all the lovely New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc flavours of pineapple, citrus and even kiwi fruit. And of course it is a wine for any occasion, anywhere and drink it as cold as you like. The coolness will not kill the quality of flavours Marlborough Of Course! McWilliams Class! McWilliams Essenze Sauvignon Blanc McWilliams are renowned for their good taste and with this new New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc they have excelled again. A couple of years ago they imported Crossings which we did a lot with but for reasons unknown they have ditched it for Essenze. We liked Crossings but we love Essenze, wine maker Corey Ryan harvested in small parcels, fermented separately and then blended to perfection. Intense Sauvignon Blanc flavours a zesty acidity and a long crisp finish. Just right after a ripping game of tennis or perhaps barefoot bowls Strong varietal characters Moondah Brook Verdelho Some very good quality wines from West Australia with the standouts, the Verdelho (biggest selling Verdelho in Australia), the Chenin Blanc and the Cabernet Rosé. The white are fresh and ready to drink but do yourself a favour and put a few bottles of the Chenin Blanc down for five years and reap the rewards. The Houghton Group of which Moondah Brook is a member have long made good quality Rosé from Cabernet fruit. Loving this carefree, fresh drink anytime Rosé. Australia s Most Successful Wines Here and Overseas Jacob s Creek Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc Jacob s Creek has been a leading name in the Australian Wine Industry for more than thirty years with its fresh easy drinking style and excellent quality. Jacob s Creek wines have won 41 trophies and 240 gold medals in the last 10 years. Whilst the quality has been increasing year by year, price rises have been moderate Some beauties here De Bortoli Windy Peak Cabernet Merlot or Sauvignon Blanc Semillon The De Bortoli family have been making wine for 80 years and they have been very clever at hitting all the price points from very premium wines to good quaffing wines at the lower end of the price scale. They are made at their Bibul Winery in the Riverina and we think they are very good value at this price Under 5 for McWilliam s Family Quality WOW! McWilliam s Inheritance Fruitwood or Fruitwood Red One of the only big family companies still firing and going very nicely too. We believe one of their biggest assets is the ability to get the quality of the wine well above the asking price. The Inheritance range is a good example with these wines as good as some companies produce for twice the price. The wines are produced from the huge vineyards the family owns in the Riverina district of NSW. The quality is getting better every year but the price is still under 5. BUY 6 FOR Angoves, winemakers in South Australia for more than 100 years Angove Long Row Chardonnay The Angove name is not the most famous in Australian wine history but they have been making excellent products, wines, beers and spirits since the 1800s. These Angove Long Rows are a blend of wines from different regions as well as using different wine making techniques. The results are terrific for wines at this price. We especially enjoyed the Chardonnay and the Merlot De Bortoli Value De Bortoli Sacred Hill Cabernet Merlot The De Bortoli Family have been on the job in Australia for more than 75 years and the head wine makers these days are third generation who the family call the dynamic duo. Darren De Bortoli, and his brother-in-law Steve Webber who is married to Leanne De Bortoli. They strive to get their vineyards right so their wines reflect their correct varietal characteristics. This they achieve with their most humble brand Sacred Hill, therefore real value for money. Sacred Hill Cabernet Merlot most popular red under 12 at the 2009 Australia Liquor Industry Awards!! Real value for money at this price! McGuigan Black Label Red Brian McGuigan is a fine winemaker and has many other skills as well, the greatest of which we believe is his marketing. He never missed a thing... get the wine right, get the price right, get the label right, get the distribution right, get the advertising right and get it tasted. We love it. Brian has retired now but his products have not been changed. Value for money is still there. Cheers! Taylors of Clare Taylors Promised Land Cabernet Merlot Bill Taylor and sons John and Bill established their winery in 1969 at Clare Valley South Australia with a dream to grow and make wine from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes grown on terro rosa soil (red brown loam over limestone). Whilst doing earthworks for a dam they found 3 tiny sea horse fossils which confirmed the limestone and they took it as an omen and called the area The Promised Land. The sea horses appear on all their famous labels and the Promised Land Range is an excellent chance to purchase Taylors quality at a budget price. 3

4 FOSTERS WINES L I Q U O R M A R T S A Real Touch of Class! Pepperjack Barossa Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon It is worth paying a few extra dollars for class. Their press release states Pepperjack - good, honest Barossa wine. We think you ll agree. Yes we do agree the Pepperjack Shiraz is a fine example of modern Barossa Shiraz. Ruby red with purple hues, the nose fruity with a hint of Shiraz spices and a touch of sweetness on the palate. Just right for a lamb roast The Metala Quality is Back Metala Shiraz Cabernet In the 1970s this was a prestige label and was quite expensive but it went to sleep for a long time. However it is back on track as an excellent wine but the price has not gone up, YET. The Metala Shiraz Cabernet is deep red in colour with vivid purple hues. This is an intensely concentrated wine with notes of blackberries and blackcurrants. The original 1891 vines are still at Metala and their juice is used for the expensive black label however we like to think the old guys influence the juniors used in this little treasure Fruit Flavours Jumping out of the Glass Jamiesons Run Limestone Coast Cabernet Shiraz Merlot Mildara Wines had owned this vineyard since the 1950s but only released the Jamiesons Run label in We loved it from the beginning and we still like it best (as with most wine companies if a label and wine is a success there is suddenly lots of varieties) of all the Jammos. The blend has red and crimson colours, plum and blackberry flavours and a subtle use of oak. It is a medium bodied red but silky smooth, a classic South Australian blend without a huge price tag. Jamiesons is now owned by Fosters and we are pleased to see they have not let us down on price or quality. 3 FOR NEW product serve chilled! A classy touch of bubbles Wolf Blass Veraé Fosters have produced a classy light red which has fruit driven sweetness but some crisp acidity balances it out. We would expect it to be a hit launced in Summer for Summer, great looking bottle, perfect in a glass, ice bucket and the wine itself a spectacular vibrant magenta... that s red to us! Liquor Legends From a Royal Red Wine Family Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet From Australia s greatest red wine maker comes their budget range which is of as high quality as many companies best products. It all started years ago with Shiraz Cabernet (still our favourite) and as usual the family has increased. The cheeky little Chardonnay and Semillion Sauvignon Blanc are good value too Seriously Good Rosé Devils Lair Fifth Leg Rosé Devils Lair Rosé looks terrific in any press advertisement, it almost jumps out of the page and we have always felt that is why some of our competitors use it so often. We however taste our advertised lines and know the wine as a seriously good Rosé. Excellent wine maker Stuart Pym has Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon in this little number and that is what you get, it is all about the fruit. Fresh, vital and vibrant with sweet, juicy fruit on the midpalete and a clean zingy finish. Bring on the tapas and sunshine. what a price on eagles! Low in alcohol Low in calories Penfolds Koonunga Hill Chardonnay Some of the cheaper Chardonnays are flat, just an enjoyable dry wine like a White Burgundy of the 70s or 80s, not so the Koonunga. Twist the Stelvin cap and immediately enjoy the nose of Chardonnay fruit and the faint smell of oak from several months spent in small oak barriques. Tasting confirms it a good Chardonnay for less then 15, all the peachy buttery flavours with balanced acidity. We need food and we suggest a generous portion of Tassie smoked salmon on a heart of Iceberg lettuce, capers, purple onion sliced very thin and some horseradish cream. Lindemans Early Harvest Semillon Sauvignon Blanc Fewer calories and less alcohol is an attractive combination IF you are skillful enough to keep all the flavours sound. Normal Australian whites sit at 12% to 14% alcohol volume and our reds at 13% to 15% alcohol volume but the new Lindemans Early Harvest wines sit between 8.5% and 9% alcohol volume. Thus there are also less calories but Lindemans chief winemaker Wayne Falkenberg assures us the quality is still there and a tasting will prove his point. Secret Stone Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc Apparently there is a secret stone found hidden deep beneath the riverbeds throughout New Zealand s South Island. This greenstone is crafted by the natives into carvings and handed down from generation to generation. We are bemused why the wine is named after the stone as it is the opposite. Do not keep, drink it right now it is sensational. It is intense and lively with all the marvellous Marlborough characteristics which Australians love. Jamiesons Run Limestone Chardonnay Lovely stuff this. Vibrant in colour with a touch of green. A lovely nose of peaches and melon with some but not too much oak. The palate shows all the Chardonnay flavours as you would expect from a quality winery with fruit from two of our great Chardonnay areas Padthaway and Coonawarra. We remember a few years ago going for any fruit from Padthaway when we could not afford the Tyrrells Vat 47 or Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay. Devil s Lair Fifth Leg Chardonnay Devil s Lair is a lane near Margaret River, that s right Margaret River West Australia, so your taste buds should be quivering. This Fifth Leg white is a classic blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and a little Chardonnay. The nose and flavours are all fruit melon and gooseberry up front and a little citrus characteristic follows. A drink anytime wine however we enjoyed it immensely with smoked salmon on a heart of lettuce with capers, purple onion and a horseradish mayonnaise Vibrant Rich & Fruity Yellowglen Yellow Brut N.V. or Pink Established in 1971, Yellowglen was named after a gold mine that was discovered in the middle of what became premium vineyards. Today Yellowglen delivers treasures of another kind, quality wines. The range includes premium bubbles suitable for any occasion. Yellow is a vibrant, rich, fruity style of sparkling with lifted melon, pineapple and citrus flavours and a wonderfully refreshing crisp, dry finish A touch of sweetness Asti Riccadonna A lovely example of Italian style sparkling made from Moscato or Muscat grapes. It is a little sweet but fruity sweet not sickly, served nice and cold it is refreshing especially with cakes and sweets. At only 8% alcohol it is perfect for any social event % fewer calories and 40% less alcohol Yellowglen Jewel Yellow or Jewel Pink Yellowglen are on a winner here it s everyone s dream, less calories, less alcohol and still good bubbles. We think this will really be a hit at lunch times and parties where you do not want to be affected by alcohol. So have a glass of bubbles and still enjoy a movie or have some bubbles and stay on top at that important function Tall glass, plenty of ice & throw in 100ml of this little ripper Rosemount O Rosemount what a surprise packet!!! On a hot day we have often dropped a couple of ice cubes in a glass or two of white. But this wine from Rosemount is actually crafted so that its delicious crisp flavours are best enjoyed over ice. Low in alcohol with just a hint of bubbles we believe it is just right for Queensland. A real party or pre dinner drink. Be the first on the block to introduce Rosemount O!!! Cheers. 5
