2 Sea Sea Cider is is a a family-owned orchard and ciderhouse near V Victoria, BC BC We We grow organic cider apples and produce award-winning hard cider. KRISTEN NEEDHAM Founder & Cidermaster A sixth-generation farmer, Kristen inherited the family orchard in At the time she wanted nothing to do with farming. Instead, as a teenager, she went off to boarding school in Wales. She drank her first cider but never dreamed that one day she would become a cidermaker. She focused on her studies and began a career in environmental management and international development, working mainly on food security projects in rural Ethiopia with farmers. She never thought that one day she would return to farming. That changed in 2002 when Sea Cider was conceived. Kristen replanted the family orchard in traditional English bittersweets and bittersharps, planted a second orchard on her mother s farm, then bought a third orchard where the ciderhouse now stands. She went back to school, but this time it was cider school. In between cider courses she made cider, planted apple trees, and built a Ciderhouse. Finally in 2007, after five years of preparation, Kristen sold cider to her first customer. Nowadays Kristen spends her time working on future plans for Sea Cider. The cidery has grown. And through it all, the aim has always been to build a family-owned, community minded business rooted in farming. Bramble Bubbly combines the best of BC cider apples with wild local blackberries which are added to achieve the rose hue and luscious blackberry flavour. With aromas of green apple, orchard leaves and blackberries, Bramble Bubbly is tart yet balanced with residual sweetness. 6 LIMITED RELEASE CIDERS WILD ENGLISH SKU: LRS: $11.99 HOS: $10.90 Heirloom Series Wild English s name is derived from the process of a wild yeast fermentation of English bittersweet cider apples, including the Kingston Blacks and Yarlington Mills grown at Sea Cider. This sparkling amber cider is ultry-dry, robust, and earthy, with distinctive tannins in the traditional Herefordshire style. 10 The Story The Blue Grouse Estate Winery, with plantings dating back to 1986, is a Vancouver Island wine pioneer. Purchased by the Brunner family in 2012, its focus shifted to Stewardship. This philosophy emphasizes long term improvement in all facets of the Estate from the environmental impact on vines and wines through to economic outcomes. The result has been a significant rebirth in the winery, the vineyards and the team that makes it happen. The initial focus was on building a modern, quality focused winery, with an eco-friendly footprint including geothermal heating and cooling, rainwater collection, closed-loop water use and treatment, and intentional reduced energy usage. With work on the winery complete, emphasis has shifted to the vineyard. Plantings are being expanded from 8 to over 35 acres. The varietal focus is also changing from Germanic Crosses (Bacchus, Ortega and Siegerrebe) to Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. The result will be improved wines and an expanded sparkling program. Internationally renowned terroir expert, Dr. Pedro Parra, is overseeing the vineyard rejuvenation. People are buzzing about how the Island winery is being elevated. It has been featured in many highly acclaimed outlets including Western Living, Global Television, the Vancouver Sun, BC Living, Toronto Star, CTV Morning Live, Vancouver Magazine, and even Forbes. The portfolio is highlighted by its Estate wines, but also includes the Quill brand, featuring single varietal, as well as red, white, and rosé blends. Topping off all of this is an exceptional visitor experience that includes in-vineyard accommodation, namely the award-winning Grouse House. Winemaker Bailey Williamson Bailey, a former chef and early proponent of the farmto-table movement, is about setting a new standard for Island wine. He is on a mission to teach all comers what the soils and climate on Vancouver Island can deliver in wines and in full support of the shift in direction. Having joined Blue Grouse in 2012 shortly after the change in ownership, Bailey embraces a holistic philosophy that involves all of his senses at every stage of winemaking. He will tell you that Mother Nature is a fickle mistress you won t get the same results every year. You have to be humble enough to learn and change. The Ortega and the Pinot Auxerrois bring both fruit and body to the party. The Riesling was added to help with the mid-palate. Secondary fermentation began in August 2016 for 12 months, with no dosage added. This sparkle starts with aromas of lemon, biscuit and almonds followed by flavours of green apples and brioche with a fine mousse on the palate. Well-balanced and dry with bright acidity and a lingering lemon-lime citrus. Start your gathering with this sparkle before dinner with friends. The wine pairs well with grilled peaches, goat cheese or raw oysters. The plants are fully mature and at the peak of their production, yielding high quality, authentic wine from the Cowichan Valley. Fermentation in 100% stainless steel was long, slow and cool. No malolactic fermentation occurred, but the wine remained on the lees for two months more. This wine reflects the best that warm Cowichan Valley summers can deliver. Ortega is Vancouver Island s signature grape and the perfect ambassador. Its delicate and floral aromas of almonds and orange peel are supported by a medium body and lively acidity. Pair it with oysters on the half shell. The balance was fermented in stainless steel and then combined with the oaked wine. Both the wine in barrel and tank, went through spontaneous malolactic fermentation, which has contributed to the wine s richness. Among the oldest Pinot Gris vines in BC, from one of the first vineyards on Vancouver Island, this vintage with its touch of malolactic fermentation boasts aromas of toffee, coconut and honey with a medium-long finish and fresh acidity. 12 2016 ESTATE PINOT NOIR UPC: SKU: LRS: $19.72 HOS: $19.72 Designated Viticultural Area (DVA): Vancouver Island The grapes were hand-harvested from yields of ~2 tons per acre. The vines grow on heavy clay-loam soils, with minimal irrigation. They were aged for 18 months in barrel; 16% new French oak and the balance in 2-3 year old French oak and underwent malolactic fermentation. The two wines were blended at the final assemblage prior to bottling, where they were fined and lightly filtered. The Pinot Noir was not inoculated with a cultured yeast, the Gamay used Yeast RC212. ESTATE PINOT NOIR 85% ESTATE GAMAY NOIR 15% HARVEST: 10/5/2016 BRIX: 22.5 ACIDITY: 5.8 g/l HARVEST: 10/5/2017 BRIX: 22 ACIDITY: 7 g/l VEGAN Aged 12 months in neutral French and American oak, this vintage exhibits elegant notes of old growth forest, ripe black cherry, clove and cedar with fine grained tannins on the palate. All were cold settled, then racked off heavy lees and fermented below 20 C to retain aromatics. Malolactic fermentation did not occur. Fitzpatrick grows seven varietals in their vineyard: Chardonnay, Ehrenfelser, Gewürztraminer, Meunier, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Riesling, and not by accident. The Fitzpatrick family had a hunch about what was right for their site when they planted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay twenty years ago, and they were right. But they also planted Merlot, and that wasn t quite right, so they pulled it up and planted Riesling. They also had it right with aromatic whites like Gewürztraminer and Ehrenfelser: those wines thrive at Greata Ranch, and you must grow what reflects the qualities of your vineyard best. IT S A LITTLE DIFFERENT AT FITZ. HERE S HOW There are a few characteristics that set this special place by Okanagan Lake apart from all the others. The first is that they are physically and literally set apart. South of Peachland, north of Summerland, and if you look in those directions from the winery, you won t see other vineyards. Across the lake is Parkland and Ogopogo s house (seriously). They are sitting in their own nanoclimate in a valley of micro ones. There is no other winery in the Okanagan growing in their specific set of conditions. In wine, we call that terroir, and theirs is distinctly Fitz. 16 SUDDEN INVERSION MERITAGE 2016 Maverick Vineyard, Osoyoos The 2016 vintage started with an unusually early and hot spring. This was followed by cooler temperatures in the summer months and a long, moderate autumn lending to long hang times for the fruit to mature and develop great flavour and complexity. The Meritage - a blend of Merlot, Cabernets Franc and Sauvignon - was cold soaked for 5 days with 10% being whole bunch. Each varietal was fermented separately in stainless steel then all lots were blended before barrelling down to French oak for 14 months aging. A natural, wild malolactic fermentation occurred in spring which was followed by further aging to add complexity and depth. 18 #5 TOP 10 SMALL WINERIES IN CANADA #7 TOP 10 BC WINERIES #13 TOP 25 WINERIES IN CANADA Larry Gerelus and Linda Pruegger started their wine journey in 1992 with the purchase of a 10 acre vineyard in Okanagan Falls, establishing Stag s Hollow Winery in 1995 on the property which now grows Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Tempranillo, Muscat and Vidal. Most vines are now over 30 years old. In 2011 with the purchase of an 18 acre hayfield now called the Shuttleworthcreek Vineyard, Stag s Hollow researched and sought grapes, both new and old, suited to the area soils and micro climate in Okanagan Falls and planted Tempranillo and Albariño from Spain, Dolcetto and Teroldago from Italy in addition to more traditional Pinot Noir and Syrah. In August 2018, Okanagan Falls became the second recognized wine producing region in BC, with its own Geographical Indicator. Both Stag s Hollow Estate and Shuttleworth Creek fall within this new sub-gi, an area defined by glacial-fluvial kettle holes, coarse sand and gravel deposits. Stag s Hollow has always strived to be environmentally conscious - using geothermal heating and cooling in the cellar, commercial building and residence in 1995, and then again in a new Winery facility built in Vineyard practices are sustainable and incorporate organic practices. Stag s Hollow winemaking style strives to showcase the terroir and natural attributes of the varietal, embracing the variation that weather brings from vintage to vintage. With careful attention to vinification, most wines are made with minimal intervention, without fining and are Vegan friendly. Keira LeFranc, Winemaker Keira grew up in the Okanagan, and got her start at Stag s Hollow in the tasting room in 2012, Showing an interest and talent in the cellar and after completing a science degree in 2013, she jumped at the opportunity to join the team on the crush pad in the Fall. This fueled Keira s passion for wine and winemaking and to learn more, Keira spent 2 years training and working as a Sommelier in Australia. After returning and completing vintage in 2015, she left to complete Postgraduate Diploma of Wine Science in New Zealand. Dedicated to natural, artisan farming and winemaking, we strive to reveal the intimate relation of wine and terroir. Each of our wines is the expression of one place, one exceptional Okanagan terroir. Hands-on farming is our first priority, and this artisanal scale is reflected in the very limited quantities produced. We strive to make wines of ever greater clarity and precision. Domaine Roche On the southern edge of the Naramata Bench, this vineyard overlooks the city of Penticton and Okanagan Lake. The twentyyear old ungrafted vines are deeply rooted in a mix of silt, organic matter and gravel. The gentle westward slope at the base of Campbell Mountain ensures good drainage and ideal exposure. We farm our vineyards using organic methods. Environmental stewardship is important to us for the health of our family and ecosystem, and for the contribution it makes to the quality of our wines. This vineyard site adjoins the winery and includes 3 acres of Schonberger, 1 acre of Zweigelt, 1.12 acres of Chardonnay and 0.63 acres of Pinot noir. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay were planted in summer Kozier Organic Vineyard Planted in 2007, Kozier Organic vineyard is located on the Naramata bench, 4 km north of the winery. The 15-acre vineyard is a gently sloping amphitheater, steeper as it approaches the mountainside. It faces west toward Okanagan lake. Gravel, sand and organic material from the mountainside above mix with denser glacial silt. The certified organic farm benefits from the synergy of a warm microclimate with cool soils ensuring long, even ripening. Merlot, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Viognier and Gewurztraminer are planted according to variations in slope orientation and subsoils to meet the needs of each variety. Pénélope Roche Dylan Roche Dylan left North Vancouver in 2000 to work as a bicycle mechanic in Burgundy and suffered a conversion experience; a diploma in viticulture and winemaking in Beaune led to apprenticeships in the Côte d Or, Chablis, and New Zealand. Five years in Bordeaux included teaching oenology and sensory evaluation classes at château Lynch-Bages in Pauillac, and managing a small winery in Margaux. Dylan has been farming vineyards and making wine in the Okanagan Valley since Born with wine in her blood, Pénélope counts six generations of viticulture and winemaking at Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion, the small family estate whose elegant wines rival the Crus Classés of Bordeaux. From oenology and viticulture studies in Bordeaux to winemaking in Spain, New Zealand and Australia, Pénélope brings to the Okanagan a profound and holistic understanding of the grapevine s relationship with its environment, from a winemaker s perspective.
