WELCOME TO COLOMBIA
ABOUT WINE TO WATER Who We Are Wine to Water s US staff consists of 6 full-time and 5 part-time members. We consider ourselves family but live in different parts of the country and are seldom in the same place at once. We are united by our passion for clean water and the joy we get from working with our local partners on the ground. Wine To Water has worked in 17 countries. We have ongoing projects in 7 countries on 4 continents, and support thirty international aid workers. Our Mission Wine To Water is a non-profit organization focused on providing clean water & sanitation to people in need around the world. Nearly 800 million people in the world today lack access to adequate water and 2.5 billion people lack access to improved sanitation. We are devoted to fighting this epidemic. Wine symbolizes fortune in our society. Our goal is to give the fortunate population an opportunity to fight for those who can't fight for themselves. What We Do Each project is unique, but the common theme is that we use local people in each country. We develop leaders in the community and educate them on proper water and sanitation methods to promote sustainable. Our work empowers the local community to help them meet their ongoing needs. With every project, the common thread in our work is: -Insuring that the proper type of water system is used for that specific community -Our methods included shallow & deep wells, well repairs, ceramic water filters, bio-sand filters, Sawyer filters, and rain-water harvest tanks -We also improve sanitation using latrine and hygiene education -We use local materials whenever possible -We monitor and report on all our projects -We are constantly developing our programs and striving for more efficient systems How We Began Doc Hendley is the founder and international president of Wine To Water. In 2003 he dreamed up the concept of the organization, while bartending and playing music in nightclubs around Raleigh, North Carolina. The first fundraiser was held in January of 2004 and by August of that year Doc was living in Darfur, Sudan installing water systems for victims of the government supported genocide. When Doc returned home in August of 2005, the haunting memories of what he had seen in Darfur drove him to continue building the organization he started two years earlier. Our Partners We have 30 international, on the ground partners including: Agua y Vida Filter Pure Connect Africa & SP-UK Water is Life Kone Kmeng Zakat Foundation In 2007, with the addition of Vice President Annie Marion, Wine To Water became an official 501(c)(3) non-profit. In 2009 Doc and the work of the Wine To Water team was recognized by the CNN Heroes program, launching the organization's efforts globally. Doc's dream, and the goal of Wine To Water, is to quench the thirst of those in need.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES What will I do when I arrive? Each tribe or village might have a different ministry opportunity. SOCCER This is an opportunity to connect with people. Normally people in villages gather together to play soccer around 4:00 pm. CHURCH MINISTRY This is available in some villages. Not all the villages visited on the trip will be open to this. Some will have government restrictions, especially in Brazil, but a number of them will welcome any ministry activity (i.e. preaching, skits, singing, praying). CHILDREN S MINISTRY There are kids in every village. They are always willing and ready to listen to visitors, have services, play games and do different activities. CONSTRUCTION The nature of the work involves construction. Whether you are drilling a well or building a large water filtration system, you will most likely always be doing some kind of construction. Be ready! If you come to work, they will definitely work you. ARTS PERFORMANCE This is meant to be an indoor activity to expose villagers to different kinds of culture. If there are any musically gifted volunteers, we encourage them to bring their instrument and play. VIDEO & DOCUMENTARIES The ground organization strives to record video of the activities, with a specific emphasis on the culture in the villages. They have found that the villagers want to produce videos and documentaries as a tool to build relationships, partners, and awareness. If there are people in the team who know how to use cameras or videocameras, we invite them to use their talent to help. LANGUAGE LEARNING & TEACHING Portuguese, Spanish, Tikuna or tribal language: As a volunteer, you will be exposed to a minimum of three languages. You can learn a new language with a local in the village. You can also attempt to teach them English. There are always people willing and interested in learning the universal language of English. HYGIENE Hygiene is a very important part of a good life. You can be a part of the teaching component in the village. MEDICAL TASK FORCE There is an opportunity to work in the medical area. If there are any medically qualified individuals in the group, they would love for you to volunteer your services.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q: What should a team pack? A: Work clothes, work gloves, shorts, church outfit, warm jacket, toiletries, Bible, notebook, reusable water bottle, closed-toe work shoes (tennis shoes are fine), sunscreen, camera (optional), hat, personal medications, and passport. Q: What airport should we plan to fly into? A: Leticia, Colombia (LET) Aeropuerto Internacional Vasquez Cobo Q: Is there a dress code? A: Church Services- Women: We ask that woman refrain from wearing shorts, maintain a modest neck line, and do not wear flip-flops or running shoes. Men: For men, we ask that you do not wear shorts, flip-flops, or running shoes. Outdoor Service Activities/Work- Women and Men: In order to be safe at the work site and during outdoor activities, we require all volunteers to have closed-toe shoes and long pants. Swimming- We ask that women wear a t-shirt and shorts over their bathing suit. For men, we ask that you wear shorts or long swimming trunks (please no speedos). Q: Will a children's program need to be prepared? A:Yes! Prepare for the unforseen! Childrens programs can either be indoors or outdoors depending on what the Rain Forest allows. Normally a village will have around 50 children of all ages! The children s program can be around 1 hour or less. Have some fun with the kids. We encourage our volunteers to be creative with instructive games, other language songs, crafts, drama, music, etc. Q: What type of payments are accepted in your country? A: You will want to bring CLEAN cash. Make sure that there are no markings and no tears on each of the bills. Bigger bills ($20 or more) are preferred. Credit and Debit cards are accepted, but you will usually find a small international fee for using it. We do not recommend checks, travelers checks or money orders, as they are difficult to use!! We recommend you exchange just a small amount at the airport, if needed, because there will be other opportunities to exchange money later. The currency in Colombia is Pesos (COP) the exchange rate is around $1900 COP to $1 US The currency in Peru is soles. The exchange rate is usually around s/.2.75 to $1 US. The currency in Brazil is Real. The exchange rate is R$2.1 to $1 US.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q: What is the recommended group size? A: We can host anywhere from 6 to 20 volunteers, depending on which village/project is chosen. If we are strictly doing water projects, our maximum number will be around 10. We can usually host up to 20 volunteers for church groups wanting to do ministry alongside the water projects. Q: Will there be snacks to purchase? A: We recommend bringing your own snacks from home because the villages have a very limited amount available for purchase. Q: What are the living conditions like? A: We have the exciting opportunity to experience the raw nature of the jungle. In this rustic environment, you will live like the natives: no Wi-Fi, no AC, and no hot water. Your sleeping arrangements will also be like the natives. You will be sleeping in hammocks or on a floor pad if you can t bear a hammock Q: Is there a way to contact home? A: We encourage you to unplug as much as possible while on your volunteer trip. Even if internet is available, we ask that you limit time spent online so that you can fully engage in the experience. Once we leave the city, we will most likely be cut off from communication to the outside world. Site leaders will have cell phones to contact home in case of emergencies, but the volunteers will have very little access to phone and internet after leaving the city. Q: Do we need a visa? A: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your departure date. You do not need to apply for a visa upon entrance, but you will be given a tourist visa for days FOR FREE at the airport s immigration boot. Q: Is there an age requirement? A: Individual: If you are traveling as an individual, you must be 18 years of age or older. Group: If you are traveling in a group, the age requirement is up to the leader of your group. Keep in mind that Wine to Water has a policy that anyone age 12 and younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for this location. Q: Are the electrical outlets the same as they are in the US? A: In North America, Colombia and Brazil we have 110 volts. In Peru, the voltage is 220. Even though the outlets are similar to the US (2 prong plug-in), some appliances will explode if they are not used without an adapter/transformer. You will need to check on the actual appliance to see what the voltage range is. Most computers, cameras, and cell phones go up to 240 voltage. Brazilian outlets may need an adapter to plug in appliances. Q: What can a team bring to donate? A: Mission Inc/Agua & Vida will send a wish list to Wine To Water periodically. Please Lisa Merritt at lisa@winetowater.org to ask for this updated wish list.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q: What vaccinations and medications are needed? A: We recommend that you check with your doctors (ideally 4-6 weeks before departure) for any personal medications, letting them know where and when you will be traveling. Required Vaccinations and Medications: -Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine -Varicella (chickenpox) vaccine -Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis vaccine -Yearly Flu Shot -Polio Vaccine Recommendations for other medications: -Diarrhea/Stomach medication -Anything for dehydration In addition to those listed above the CDC (Center for Disease Control, also recommends that you are updated on the following vaccines. ***These are not required*** -Rabies Vaccine -Hepatitis A (you can get Hepatitis A through contaminated food or water) -Hepatitis B -Typhoid (you can get Typhoid through contaminated food or water) -Yellow Fever -Malaria medicine (taken orally before, during, and after your trip) also recommends that you are updated on the following vaccines. ***These are not required*** -Rabies Vaccine -Hepatitis B -Typhoid -Malaria medicine (taken orally before, during, and after your trip) Q: What is the weather like? A: We encourage all of our volunteers to check the weather before departing, but August through November is usually the hottest time with temperatures reaching up to 120 degrees!! The average temprature is around 80 degrees. There is a time of the year (June) that tempratures can get down to 40 degrees and that is really cool, but it could only last for 3 to 7 days. Q: What will meals be like? A: Since Leticia is on the boarder of Colombia, Brazil, and Peru, there will be a variety of typical foods to try. You could possibly eat a meal in each country all in the same day! What you will face here is usually chicken, yucca, plantains, fish, farinha, and of course rice.
