2 Thomas Jefferson played a pivotal role in the founding of our nation, being the principal author of the Declaration of Independence and a vocal champion of individual freedoms. But Jefferson was also a great traveler and thoroughly captivated by the culture, history and especially the wines of the Old World; he was particularly fond of France where he lived for five years, serving first as a commissioner in Paris and later as the U.S. Minister to France. On this Travel/Study first, we follow Jefferson s footsteps on both sides of the Atlantic, in Virginia and in France. Lighting our way are American studies expert Adrienne Jamieson and French political scientist and wine aficionado Patrick Chamorel. This promises to be a delightful journey for both the mind and the senses! Brett S. Thompson, 83, Director, Stanford Travel/Study university of virginia rotunda Highlights VISIT the meticulously designed campus of Jefferson s brainchild, the University of Virginia, and enjoy an after-hours tour of Monticello. EXPLORE historic sites from Jefferson s time in and around Paris, including the Panthéon and the Château de Fontainebleau. SAMPLE fine vintages at vineyards in Burgundy and enjoy an exclusive, sommelier-guided wine pairing at a private Rhône Valley estate. burgundy vineyard

5 rhône valley Thomas Jefferson ( ) Celebrated as one of America s most famous founding fathers and the author of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson helped lay the foundation for a new democratic nation and led an impressive, storied career of public service and diplomacy that exemplified his passions for history, philosophy, culture, cuisine, architecture and education. Among his many accomplishments, he built his estate at Monticello (1770); served as governor of Virginia ( ), minister to France (1785), secretary of state ( ), vice president ( ) and president ( ) of the United States; negotiated the Louisiana Purchase (1803); and founded the University of Virginia (1819). Our program explores his legacy, both in his home state of Virginia and in the cities and vineyards of France, a country he dearly loved. beaune Jefferson and Wine Wine might not be the best-known side of Jefferson or his greatest legacy, yet it played an essential part in his life ( Wine is a necessity of life for me, he once said). Jefferson was probably the most prominent American connoisseur and promoter of wine for his time. He tried, mostly unsuccessfully, to grow vines and produce wine at Monticello, and relentlessly encouraged the development of viticulture, as well as the import, distribution and consumption of wine in the United States. In all likelihood, no president probably ever drank and served more fine wines and champagne than Jefferson did during his sumptuous dinners at the White House. Thomas Jefferson s lengthy postings in France gave him the opportunity to travel throughout Europe and, most particularly, the French countryside, often in search of more wine knowledge and experiences. During his lengthiest such trip, from February through June of 1787, he visited all the major wine regions of France: Burgundy, the Rhône Valley, Provence, Languedoc-Roussillon, Bordeaux, the Loire and Champagne. Along the way, he tasted hundreds of different wines, visited vineyards and studied the vinification process. Jefferson developed relationships with vintners whose descendants we will meet. Not content with being merely a tourist and scholar, Jefferson proved a pioneer: he encouraged domaine bottling when it was still uncommon and ranked the quality of wines and vineyards with a judgment that was confirmed decades later by the great classifications that are still in effect today. We will explore this often hidden part of Jefferson s life as we visit the vineyards and drink the wines he cherished.

Deviations on the return flight from Lyon are possible and may incur additional charges, which are the responsibility of the participant. Information on flight itineraries will be sent by our designated agent. WHAT TO EXPECT We consider this program to be mildly active, and participants should be in good health. Daily tours are busy, involving one to three miles of walking on city streets, which are, in some cases, uneven or cobblestoned. Some historic properties and museums are quite expansive, and guided tours require the ability to climb up and down several flights of stairs and stand in one place for 20 to 30 minutes at a time. These busy days are contrasted with the relaxed pace in France s Burgundy and Rhône wine regions, where wine tastings are offered at several private estates and historic vineyards. We welcome travelers 18 years of age and older on this program. Terms & Conditions Deposit & Final Payment A $1,000 deposit is required to hold space for Thomas Jefferson s Legacy. An additional $200 deposit is required to hold space for the Optional Post-trip Extension. Cancellations & Refunds Deposits and any payments are fully refundable, less a $500-perperson cancellation fee, until 120 days prior to departure. After that date, refunds can be made only if the program is sold out and your place(s) can be resold, in which case a $1,000-per-person cancellation fee will apply. We recommend trip-cancellation insurance; applications will be sent to you. Insurance Stanford Travel/Study provides all travelers who are U.S. or Canadian citizens with minimal medical, accident and evacuation coverage under our group-travel insurance policy. Our group policy is intended to provide minimal levels of protection while you are traveling on this program. We strongly recommend that you subscribe to optional baggage and trip-cancellation insurance.
