One of the three bottles served at the Chateaus tasting revealed a surprisingly aggressive, minty, herbaceous nose, but the other two bottles were liquid perfection, exhibiting fragrant, cedary, truffle, leather, mineral, and sweet, jammy aromatics, full-bodied, voluptuous textures, exquisite purity and concentration, and a layered, highly-nuanced finish that represents the essence of compellingly great wine. The 1961 has been fully mature for over 15 years, but it seems to get richer, holding onto its succulence and fat, and developing more aromatic nuances without losing any sweetness or concentration. An extraordinary wine, it is unquestionably one of the Bordeaux legends of the century! This wine has been drinking splendidly for several years, exhibiting fabulous mocha/toffee/jammy black-cherry aromas in a complex, sweet, fragrant bouquet. Full-bodied, splendidly concentrated, velvety-textured, with a firm finish, this is a weighty, rich, complex, great vintage for Trotanoy. Drink it over the next years. Like so many top Pomerols in the 1975 vintage, there is a sweetness and jamminess to this wines fruit that is not found in most 1975 Medocs. This is a glorious Trotanoy! Robert Parker 95/100 This was clearly the best bottle of 1975 Trotanoy Ive ever tasted. Its opulent, lush, plummy, truffle laden qualities were impossible to resist. 5 BORDEAUX RED LIST PRICE SALE PRICE / B 1/75CL Beausejour Duffau 1er Grand Cru St. Emilion - Bin Soiled One of the most singular Bordeaux I have ever tasted, it verges on being port-like, but it pulls back because of the extraordinary minerality and laser-like focus. The wine is massively concentrated, still black/purple-hued to the rim, and offers a nose of incense, blackberries, blueberry liqueur, acacia flowers, and forest floor. It reveals low acidity and high tannins, which are largely concealed by the sheer concentration and lavish glycerin the wine possesses. Aging at a glacial pace, it is approachable, but it will not hit its peak until 2020; it should last for twenty years thereafter. Huge and massive, yet gorgeously proportioned, it possesses an unctuous texture with no hard edges. Seductive and easy to drink, it should be consumed between now and Robert Parker 94/ B 1/75CL Troplong Mondot Grand Cru Classe St. Emilion B 1/75CL Latour a Pomerol B 1/75CL La Conseillante Pomerol Nice deep Plum, still youthfull, this has blossomed on the nose with dark plummy fruit, plenty of pepper and tapenade, grilled and heady. The palate is well proportionned with plenty of chewy fruit, good zip and dusty tannins, now mostly integrated. This is just a point, a lovely emotive Claret with plenty of finesse as expected from this great property. Medium length, very nice balance. Will drink well for another 5 years or so. I found everything still there for a perfect rating, but I was just struck by how tight and backward the wine was. A blend of 93.3% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot, the wine still has a dark ruby/purple color and an extraordinarily youthful nose of graphite, black currants, sweet, unsmoked cigar tobacco, and flowers. The wine is rich, medium to full-bodied, but has that ethereal elegance and purity that is always Lafite. I originally predicted that it would first reach maturity in 2011, but I would push that back by 5-7 years now, although it has years of life in front of it. Owners of this beauty are probably best advised to forget it for 5 years. This excellent estate, run by the owner of Faugeres, Corinne Guisez, who has St.-Emilion vineyards abutting Cap de Faugeres, has fashioned a very fine, possibly outstanding Deep ruby/purple-hued with aromas of smoke, charcoal, blackberries, and assorted blue fruits, this medium-bodied, substantial offering reveals loads of concentration, terrific purity, and fine overall balance. Enjoy it over the next decade. It is a sleeper of the vintage. Robert Parker 88-90/ B 1/75CL Haut Brion 1er Cru Pessac Leognan Clearly the best wine made in the Haut-Brion stable in 2003 (the last vintage of the great Jean-Bernard Delmas as administrator), the 2003 Haut- Brion is a blend of 58% Merlot, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Cabernet Franc that hit 13% natural alcohol, which seemed high at the time, but given more recent vintages is modest. Dark ruby/plum in color, with no amber or orange at the edge, the wine exhibits an abundance of roasted herbs, hot rocks, black currants, plum, and balsamic notes. Quite rich, medium to full-bodied and more complete, with sweeter tannins than La Mission Haut-Brion, this full-bodied Haut-Brion has hit full maturity, where it should stay for at least a decade. The 2005, a blend of 70% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, was fashioned from yields of 33 hectoliters per hectare. This concentrated wine possesses a gorgeous bouquet of smoke, black currant liqueur, lead pencil shavings, cedar, and Asian spices. In the mouth, it displays a chocolaty richness, a beautiful texture, an expansive, multilayered mouthfeel, and a 45-second finish. A fabulous effort, it will be drinkable in 4-5 years, and should last for over two decades. This is the best wine I have ever tasted from this property, which has gone through many changes and frequent listless, uninspiring performances. The change to a better class of St.-Estephe was started by the late Vincent Mulliez, who passed away tragically last year, but who got things started by reducing yields, cleaning up the place, eliminating the TCA that had tainted so many wines in the past, and going with a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. The result is the best wine they have ever made, or at least the finest I have ever tasted from them. Hedonistic and essentially a generic fruit bomb, but well-made, pure, with loads of character, this wine should be drunk over het next 3-5 years. Made by the famous Professor Denis Dubourdieu from the School of Oenology in Bordeaux, this is the best wine I think I have ever tasted from this producer of valuepriced generic Bordeaux. 8 BORDEAUX RED LIST PRICE SALE PRICE / CS 12/75CL La Bernadotte Haut Medoc Cru Bourgeois This has a slightly disjointed nose at first, blackberry, a touch of smoke, something a little estuarine perhaps. Coalescing nicely with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied: firm tannins, good definition, a slight powdery texture, very fine clarity and sense of joie de vivre towards the symmetrical finish. Conservative but very well focused. Neal Martin 89-91/100 This shows a solid core of dark fruits such as blueberries and blackberries, with hints of flowers. Full body, with a fine tannin structure and a clean finish. W J Gardener / CS 6/75CL Pavie Macquin Grand Cru Classe St Emilion CS 12/75CL La Dominique Grand Cru Classe St Emilion Nice depth of colour, a very powerful intense perfumed nose, blackcurrant, brambley palate, chewy texture, full bodied,, smoky notes, good midpalate, chewy and receptive, a polished result here, this Chateau is on a role the 2008 was also superb! W J Gardener / CS 12/75CL Domaine De Chevalier Pessac Leognan Lovely cakey blueberry nose, exceptional palate, generous and charming, inky weight, intense long finish, this is an elegant complex wine, a very fine example of the Chateau. W J Gardener /100 In late 2011, I had the last bottle in my cellar of the 1970 Domaine de Chevalier. Much to my surprise, it was still holding on to life and remained gorgeously complex in that ethereal Graves style. The 2009, one of the finest Domaine de Chevaliers yet produced, reveals a striking bouquet of burning embers, sweet cherry, black and red currant fruit, spice box, cedar and lead pencil shavings. The tannins are sweet in this fleshy, fullbodied offering. It is built on the notion of extraordinary harmony, elegance and complexity. While not the most concentrated or flamboyant 2009, its intense aromas are already reasonably evolved and its lusciousness and balance are terrific. Made from an interesting blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot, its yields of 45 hectoliters per hectare were slightly higher than many of its neighbors achieved. Drink it over the next 25 years. Inky blue/purple with notes of camphor, forest floor, blackberry, cassis, sweet cherries, licorice, the wine has stunning aromatics, unctuous texture and an almost inky concentration, but without any hard edges. With considerable tannin and just enough acidity to provide definition, this wine transcends even its premier grand cru classe terroir. It is certainly the finest Clos Fourtet ever produced. Give it 5-7 years of cellaring to allow some of its baby fat to fall away. There is certainly enough structure underneath to keep for years. Bravo! Robert Parker 100/ CS 12/75CL Smith Haut Lafitte Pessac Leognan 2, , CS 3/75CL Ausone 1er Grand Cru St Emilion 2, , A masterpiece in the making, proprietor Alain Vauthier s 2009 Ausone boasts a dense purple color along with notes of powdered chalk, crushed rocks and wild blue, red and black fruits. Extravagantly rich with great minerality, precision and freshness as well as a voluptuous texture (unusual for a baby Ausone), this is an extraordinary wine. Dark crimson. Concentrated and meaty but not (unlike Cambon La Pelouse just tasted) exaggerated. Sweet, opulent palate entry. Very smooth but dense too. The tannins make their presence felt only on the finish. Very nicely made. Lovely liqueur but dry and classically built. Refreshing finish. Bravo! Jancis Robinson 17/20 Lush but lifted blackberry nose, with a hint of menthol, Cabernet black fruits and earth. 9 BORDEAUX RED LIST PRICE SALE PRICE / B 1/75CL Clos Des Menuts Grand Cru St Emilion Deep plum centre, starting to pink at the rim, soy, beef extract even marmite on the nose, leathery, this is quite complex and evolved on the nose, the savoury over hauling the fruit at present, chocolate cherry coming through, still quite tight in the mid palate but easing up round the edges, peppery, still quite lean, but powerful, need a bit more time, maybe a couple of years yet. Jancis Robinson 16.5/ CS 12/75CL Preuillac Haut Medoc Cru Bourgeois A beautiful blend of 53% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc, this dense purple-colored wine is supple and seductive, with full-bodied opulence and loads of black currant and black cherry fruit intermixed with some cedar wood, fruitcake and spice. Pure, textured and luscious on the palate, this one should drink nicely for 5-8 years. Robert Parker 88/ CS 12/75CL Coufran Cru Bourgeois Haut Medoc CS 12/75CL Peyrabon Cru Bourgeois Haut Medoc The Peyrabon has good definition on the nose with black cherries, cassis and a touch of blueberry. The palate is medium-bodied, chewy on the entry but cohesive, very good weight with blackberry and blueberry fruit, but needing to develop a little more definition towards the finish. Fine. Tasted April Neal Martin 88-90/ CS 12/75CL Les Grands Chenes Cru Bourgeois Medoc A blend of 60% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc, this has a ripe, rounded, velvety smooth bouquet that has slightly better delineation than the Clementin du Pape Clement tasted alongside. The palate is full-bodied with dense tannins but good acidity. Tightly coiled but well defined towards the finish. Outstanding! Tasted April Neal Martin 91-93/ CS 24/37.5CL Lilian Ladouys Cru Bourgeois Saint Estephe CS 12/75CL Vrai Canon Bouche Canon Fronsac Yields were absurdly low at 20 hectoliters per hectare, and the final blend of 95% Merlot and the rest small dosages of Cabernet Franc and Malbec came in at 14.5% natural alcohol. Opaque blue/purple, the unmistakable notes of wet rock, blueberry liqueur, spring flower garden, crushed chalk and earth are all present in this full-bodied, seriously endowed, over-achieving Fronsac, It is built for the long haul, so consumers would be welladvised to forget it for several years and drink it over the following 10-15, possibly even 20. Robert Parker 92/ CS 6/150CL Rollan De By Cru Bourgeois Haut Medoc CS 12/75CL La Dominique Grand Cru Classe St Emilion The wine displays plenty of licorice, Christmas fruitcake, black currants, licorice, truffles and some espresso notes. Full-bodied, viscous and somewhat reminiscent of many 2009s, given its blast of fruit, glycerin and heady alcohol, this is a beautifully rich St.-Emilion for pleasure seekers. Don t discount its ageability, as I am sure it has two decades ahead of it. Robert Parker 93/ CS 6/75CL Pavie Macquin Grand Cru Classe St Emilion This is always an extremely masculine, dense, burly wine, and the 2010, which tips the scales at 14.5% alcohol (just slightly under that of the 2009), has a final blend of 80% Merlot and the rest virtually all Cabernet Franc, with just 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. Loads of crushed rock and chalkiness, along with licorice, black truffle, smoked game and black fruits dominate the aromatics and flavor. Backward, formidably endowed, fullbodied and almost atypically massive and huge, with gargantuan extraction, this is a wine for patient connoisseurs to forget about for close to a decade. Anticipated maturity: Robert Parker 95+/ CS 12/75CL La Lagune 3rd Cru Ludon Another great success from proprietress Caroline Frey, the 2010 La Lagune provides an essential drinking experience, with notes of Asian plum sauce, mulberries, kirsch liqueur and black currants. The wine also exhibits a savory, rich smokiness and subtle lead pencil shaving notes. Fullbodied and pure, combining both elegance and power, this is a brilliant, very approachable effort that should hit its stride in 5-7 years and last for at least two decades. Think of it as a hypothetical blend of the 2005 and Kudos! Robert Parker 94/ CS 6/75CL Haut Bailly Pessac-leognan CS 12/75CL Malescot St. Exupery 3rd Cru Margaux Gorgeous, flowery, classic Margaux once again, the 2010 Malescot St.-Exupery continues to show virtually no toasty oak, given the impeccable balance and full-bodied, full-throttle style it possesses. Black raspberries, creme de cassis and spring floral notes intermixed with forest floor and a hint of charcoal are followed by an opulent, sexy, full-bodied wine whose tannins have become much sweeter, while the wine is less restrained yet still exuberant and impressive. This is a phenomenal example once again for this estate, harmonious in every sense of style, extraordinarily long, rich and ageworthy. Three to four years of bottle age will do wonders to make it more accessible, but this wine is set for years of longevity. 10 BORDEAUX RED LIST PRICE SALE PRICE / CS 12/75CL Lynch Bages 5th Cru Pauillac 1, , The 2010 Lynch Bages is an absolutely brilliant wine, and somewhat reminiscent at this stage in its development of the profound Jean- Charles Cazes, who took over for his father a number of years ago, has produced a magnificent wine with the classic creme de cassis note intermixed with smoke, graphite and spring flowers. It is a massive Lynch Bages, full-bodied and very 1989-ish, with notable power, loads of tannin, and extraordinary concentration and precision. This is not a Lynch Bages to drink in its exuberant youth, but one to hold on to for 5-6 years and drink over the following three decades. Robert Parker 96/ CS 6/75CL L'Eglise Clinet Pomerol 1, , This wine will likely be a major superstar with about years of cellaring. It was one of the more closed and difficult wines to penetrate and one of probably only a dozen or so 2010s that I only had one chance to taste from bottle, but it is loaded with fabulous raw materials. The 2010 is a profound effort, but it needs to be forgotten for at least a decade. This opaque purple wine offers up notes of caramelized black currant and black cherry candies intermixed with some very high class, subtle vanillin and toast. Hints of licorice, mocha and perhaps even a touch of chocolate are also present in this full-bodied, super-duper, concentrated, classic wine, which has everything in perfect proportions. But in the finish, its whoppingly big tannins kick in and basically announce that drinking this wine now would be infanticide. Look for this wine to last for at least 50+ years. Proprietor Denis Durantou has been on a hot streak, and is one of those perfectionist proprietors who seems tortured by their compulsion to do everything so well. Believe me, as a wine drinker, you want people like Durantou making the wines! Robert Parker 96+/ CS 12/75CL Montrose 2nd Cru St Estephe 2, , This is considered to be among the greatest vintages ever made in Montrose, right up with the 1929, 1945, 1947, 1959, 1961, 1989, 1990 and Harvest was October 15 to 17. The wine has really come on since I last tasted it, and it needs at least another 10 years of cellaring. The blend was 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The wine is opaque black/blue, with an incredible nose of blueberry and blackberry liqueur, with hints of incense, licorice, and acacia flowers. Tannins are incredibly sweet and very present. The wine is full-bodied, even massive, with great purity, depth and a finish that goes on close to a minute. This is a 50- to 75-year-old wine that will repay handsomely those with good aging genes. (Note: The Chateau Montrose website gives an aging potential of ) Robert Parker 100/ CS 12/75CL Angelus 1er Grand Cru St.Emilion 3, , A blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Franc cropped at 32 hectoliters per hectare, the 2010 may not hit the peaks of the extraordinary 2009 or 2005, but it is another fabulous wine from proprietor Hubert de Bouard. It boasts an inky/blue/purple color along with abundant aromas of acacia flowers, blueberry liqueur, black raspberries, licorice and subtle toasty oak in the background. A notion of graphite emerges as the wine sits in the glass, which tends to be a characteristic of Angelus. Long, rich, dense and full-bodied with high but well-integrated tannins, it will rival the 1989 and 1990 as well as the 2009 and 2005 as one of the finest wines made at this estate. At present, the 2009 has a slight edge because of its more sumptuous texture. Nevertheless, the 2010 is a great wine with a future of at least 30 years! Robert Parker / CS 12/75CL Latour 1er Cru Pauillac 12, , One of the perfect wines of the vintage, Frederic Engerer challenged me when I tasted the 2010 Latour at the estate, asking, "If you rate the 2009 one hundred, then how can this not be higher?" Well, the scoring system stops at 100, (and has for 34 years,) and will continue for as long as I continue to write about wine. Nevertheless, this blend of 90.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9.5% Merlot, and.5% Petit Verdot hit 14.4% natural alcohol and represents a tiny 36% of their entire production. The ph is about 3.6, which is normal compared to the 3.8 ph of the 2009, that wine being slightly lower in alcohol, hence the combination that makes it more flamboyant and accessible. The 2010 is a liquid skyscraper in the mouth, building layers upon layers of extravagant, if not over-the-top richness with its hints of subtle charcoal, truffle, blackberry, cassis, espresso and notes of toast and graphite. Full-bodied, with wonderfully sweet tannin, it is a mind-boggling, prodigious achievement that should hit its prime in about 15 years, and last for 50 to 100. There is no denying the outrage and recriminations over the decision by the Pinault family and their administrator, Frederic Engerer, to pull Latour off the futures market next year. However, you can still buy these 2010s, although the first two wines are not likely to be released until they have more maturity, which makes sense from my perspective. Perhaps Latour may have offended a few loyal customers who were buying wines as futures, but they are trying to curtail all the interim speculation that occurs with great vintages of their wines (although only God knows what a great vintage of future Latour will bring at seven or eight years after the harvest). As a set of wines, the 2010s may be the Pinaults and Engerer s greatest achievements to date. Of course, I suspect the other first-growth families won t want to hear that, nor will most of the negociants in Bordeaux, but it s just the way things are. Frederic Engerer, by no means the most modest of administrators at the first growths, thinks it would be virtually impossible to produce a wine better than this, and he may well be correct. If they gave out Academy Awards for great performances in wine, the Pinaults and Engerer would certainly fetch a few in P.S. Just so you don t worry, Engerer offered up the 2009 next to the 2010 to see if I thought it was still a 100-point wine, and yes, ladies and gentlemen, it still is. Robert Parker 100/100 Very dark indeed. Concentrated black-fruit essence plus terroir. Round and supple. Lots of angularity. Latour? Great refreshment factor and lots of minerality. Full-bodied, powerful, pure and impressively rich, this blend of 85% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon tips the scales at 14.5% alcohol. Anticipated maturity: Robert Parker 92-94/ CS 12/75CL Vieux Chateau Certan Pomerol 1, The grand retour of Cabernet Franc with 29% in the blend. Less opulence than 2009 and 2010 but this is a wine that really sings. It has a vital, floral, dark fruit nose, a silky texture and tannins. Succulent, fresh and long. A classic VCC. Quite an animal austere edge on the nose, good concentration, pronounced black fruits underneath, elegant and perfumed. Definite finesse, a cool palate, almost seamless with plenty of acidity and charm in the fruit, maybe a touch jammy on the finish but attractive all the same. Open again and expressive. Promising future, this is a fine Beausejour Becot. Drink W J Gardener /100 A spectacular wine from this nearly 50-acre vineyard situated atop St.-Emilion s famed limestone plateau, the final blend for the 2012 Beau-Sejour Becot was 70% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. It achieved 14% natural alcohol and yields were 31 hectoliters per hectare. One of the stars of the vintage, it is elegant yet powerful, rich and authoritative with abundant black raspberry, blueberry, graphite and toasty vanillin notes. Full-bodied and super rich for a 2012, it is packed with potential. The tannins are ripe as well as abundant suggesting several years of bottle age will be required. It should turn out to be a 20 year proposition. Kudos to the Becot family for producing this beauty. Robert Parker 92-95/ CS 6/75CL Lynch Bages 5th Cru Pauillac A deep colour for the vintage, quite dumb with hints of black fruit and black olive, but there is finesse here, the palate is dense and considerably endowed with powdery tannins. The extracted style of Lynch Bages is on display right now and may prove too much for the 2012, but this could evolve into a fine Lynch. Particularly bright crimson. Savoury, lively nose. Drier and lighter than most but racy and satisfying in the new style. Good freshness and breadth. Really very polished. Jancis Robinson 17.5/20 The 2015 Château d'armailhac is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, marking a slightly higher percentage of Merlot this year. Picking began on September 16 and finished October 5 - one of the longest harvest periods for this estate, according to Philippe Dhalluin. It has a very intense bouquet with layers of small dark cherries and cassis, the oak prominent, though the final blend will contain proportionally less. The palate is very concentrated and quite showy, as d'armailhac has a proclivity of being at this early juncture. The acidity here is nicely judged with just a touch of graphite coming through on the finish. This is a satisfactory d'armailhac, but there was a nagging feeling that this is one wine from the Mouton Rothschild stable that left me wanting more. Perhaps that will develop during its barrel maturation? Neal Martin 89-91/100 Lovely florality, lifted fruit and silky tannins. This wine has got both broader and finer over the years and is now totally complete in the feminine d Armailhac style. Decanter Magazine 92/ CS 12/75CL La Croix Du Casse Pomerol CS 12/75CL Fonroque Grand Cru St Emilion (Bio-Dynamique) CS 12/75CL Franc Mayne Grand Cru St. Emilion The 2015 Franc-Mayne has a refined and detailed bouquet with blackberry, raspberry coulis and a touch of cedar emerging from the glass. This is a classy bouquet in the making. The palate is fresh and vibrant with succulent red berry fruit overlaying a fine lattice of tannin. Precise, focused and elegant without compromising the fruit, this is perhaps the best wine that I have tasted from this estate. Bravo! Neal Martin 93-95/ CS 12/75CL Sociando Mallet Cru Bourgeois Haut Medoc CS 12/75CL Desmirail 3rd Cru Margaux CS 6/75CL Lascombes 2nd Cru Margaux CS 12/75CL Grand Mayne Grand Cru St. Emilion Dark purple colour, very creamy black fruited nose, quite impressive, broad and focussed, the palate is equally creamy, this is stylish, meaty, dense, complex oaky finish, a very good Grand Mayne. This is one of the best value estates in the whole of Saint Emilion, older vintages I have tasted have been in great condition, a three decade wine. W J Gardener 91-93/100 "The 2015 Grand Mayne has a ripe small, dark cherry and mulberry scented bouquet, very perfumed with cassis scents emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, very elegant and poised, part of a new style of Grand Mayne that is much more refined than the vintages of the 1990s and 2000s. In a word, what Jean-Antoine Nony and his team have made here is a ""stylish"" Saint Emilion." Neal Martin 92-94/ CS 12/75CL Clos Du Clocher Pomerol The 2015 Clos du Clocher is a blend of 81% Merlot and 19% Cabernet Franc that was matured in 65% new oak (15% 'vinification intégrale'). It has an intense bouquet with generous, vivacious dark cherry, cassis and black truffle aromas that do not hold back from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with silky smooth tannin, very nicely poised, quite weighty in the mouth with fine backbone on the finish, suggesting that this Clos du Clocher is a long-term contender. Neal Martin 92-94/ CS 12/75CL Chateau Quintus St Emilion Grand Cru 1, B 1/75CL Le Pin Pomerol 1, , CS 6/75CL Cheval Blanc 1er Grand Cru Classe St Emilion 3, , The 2015 Cheval Blanc represents the entire vineyard this year, since there is no Le Petit Cheval (two plots that did not meet requirements were not included in any blend). A blend of 45% Cabernet Franc/Cabernet Sauvignon and 55% Merlot, matured in 100% new oak, it has a very complex bouquet, subtle and tightly wound, very precise with dark berry fruit, hints of graphite, minerals and a hint of black pepper, perhaps a little spicier than recent vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with extraordinarily fine tannin. Beautifully balanced, perfectly controlled, this Cheval Blanc gently builds in the mouth, but remains strict and precise. The Cabernet Franc here is very expressive (though apparently the Merlot was showier prior to malolactic). This is an intellectual Cheval Blanc, thoroughly enjoyable, but it will need years to really show its pedigree. A profound wine in the making, it will rank with the great wines of the past.
