Yet further time on lees (and on cork) will be rewarded. 94 Points. SA Weekend, The Advertiser, Jan 2015 Winemaker Kate Laurie learned her craft in Champagne and went back for a refresher sabbatical last year, and the results keep informing her highly impressive stable of sparkling wines. It s hard to pick a favourite from the three Deviation Road styles, but I opt for the Loftia, with its delicate floral aromas and full, generous palate of ripe white peach and crisp apple in perfect balance. The cellar door also has some 2010 Loftia re-released, but be quick. David Sly, SA Life, Dec2014/Jan2015 Indulge yourself. This 70/30 pinot chardonnay is a very pleasing drink, clean and dry with a long finish. Its bouquet is nutty, creamy, nougat and meringue-like. Rich, deep flavour; cleansing lemony acidity. Tony Love, The Advertiser 10 Dec 2014 The other excitement in my tasting was Deviation Road, the sparkling (and still) venture of Kate and Hamish Laurie in the Adelaide Hills. Kate is the winemaker, passionate about Champagne, and her sparkling wines have been exciting my palate for the past few years. She has a new Loftia (2012 pinot noir chardonnay) and Beltana (2009 blanc de blancs) out. Both are exceptional. Huon Hooked, Hooked on Wine, 26/11/2014 Page 2 of 5

The bouquet is nutty and creamy, nougat and meringue-like and showing some lees-aged complexity. The wine is rich and deep, with lots of flavour and bright lemony acidity cleansing the finish. A very pleasing wine, with a very clean, dry, and quite long finish. I'd enjoy drinking this. (70/30 pinot noir, chardonnay) Huon Hooked, Hooked on Wine, 26/11/2014 Winemaker Kate Laurie learnt the trade in Champagne and her vintage work there over the past years is on display in the fantastic 2009 Loftia. It has delicate floral aromas and an elegant palate balanced with lovely texture, showing rich and buttery stone fruits while still being quite light on its feet. Michael Andrewartha (The Tasting Room, InDaily, Oct Kate Laurie of Deviation Road winery at Longwood in the Adelaide Hills was destined to make top quality sparkling wine, learning her craft in vineyards and wineries in Champagne and in her family s Stone Bridge winery in Manjimup, WA. Her husband Hamish also has a family background in wine through working with his father Chris Laurie at Hillstowe Wines. The Deviation Road Adelaide Hills Loftia Vintage Brut 2012 benefits from a great vintage year, when an ideal ripening season produced fruit of intense flavour and good acidity. Handcrafted in the méthode traditionnelle in the family winery from 70% pinot noir and 30% chardonnay aged for 24 months on lees, the wine has aromas of strawberry and green apple and a palate providing a smooth passage to a clean finish. Ross Noble, The Courier, 12 Nov Vintage A lot of passion and Champagne regional experience goes into this wine from Kate Laurie, who has built a sophisticated set of complexities among its core green apple fruit elements it s creamy with a superfine bubbles and bead, a note of brine, and even a sense of fresh white cheeses. Impressive. Tony Love, Top 100 Wines, The Advertiser 19 Jul 2014 A 50/50% blend of pinot noir and chardonnay made using the traditional method, disgorgement with 20 months on lees. Pale straw-pink hue; a most attractive, crisp, fresh and lively palate, the cool vintage ideal for sparkling base wines. Ripe citrus flavours plus some toast work very well indeed. 94 points. 4 The 2011 Loftia is a 52/48% blend of pinot noir and chardonnay drawn from the Lenswood vineyard Hamish s father had planted nearly three decades ago. Base wines undergo primary and malo-lactic fermentation before being blended the subsequent spring into a cuvee that sees a minimum of 18 months on lees. It is constantly hand-riddled and manually disgorged in small batches as needed. The result is beautifully fine, precise and elegant. It shows lemon pith, green apple and hot sourdough lathered in cultured butter with a gentle and discreet lees influence. It s clean racy and drives beautifully through a long, sustained finish. It s one of the finest sparklings I ve seen produced in this country. Nick Ryan, SA Weekend, The Advertiser Sep It is made lovingly by Kate Laurie to the Champagne method, but don t compare it to Champagne. It is gently baked apple-fruited with touches of crystallised peel and is long and lingering and perfectly balanced on the tongue. 94/100, 9/10 and Diam sealed so consistently excellent. Tim White, Financial Review 27 Dec Jan 2014 beautifully fine, precise and elegant. It shows lemon pith, green apple and hot sourdough lathered in cultured butter with a gentle and discrete lees influence and a flicker of funk. It's clean, racy and drives beautifully through a long, sustained finish. This is one of the finest sparklings I've seen produced in this country. Bright eye, delicate strawberry fruit, patisserie-like dimensions, fine texture, dry finish and fragrant lingering aftertaste. 93/100. Fantastic value. Ralph Kyte-Powell, The Age 17 Dec 2013 Made in the Adelaide Hills, this is all the things the style should be it has aromas of citrus, a hint of yeast, a palate all about finesse and an acidity that s pert. This is one for when the right people pop in. Ben Canaider, Virgin Australia Voyeur Dec 2013 A Vintage Brut style that has had a lot of smart winemaking built in to create a fine beaded, sophisticated, fresh and zesty feel but with plenty of complexity as well crunchy green apples, cream cheeses, a touch of briny stock adding deeper flavour. Excellent. 4.5/5. Tony Love, The Advertiser 30 Nov 2013 A terrific wine whose only drawback is being released so young. Light, bright yellow hue leads into a fresh lemony aroma with a trace of lees-developed complexity, and the palate is delicate and refined, taut and focused, with bright acidity and good persistence. 5 2010 Vintage Kate s winemaking is precise and sensitive and she is abundantly aware of the consumer (not a quality that all winemakers have) and this gives her an angle on deliciousness which features predominantly in this beautiful sparkler [2010 Loftia]. Her formal training in Champagne has stood her in good stead, but it is the pristine Adelaide Hills fruit here that shines in the glass. Matthew Jukes, 100 Best Australian Wines 2014/15 The mesh of flavour is textural, nutty autolysis with the power of Pinot Noir fruit, mostly. But there s refreshment here and a light, creamy mouthfeel giving good vibes. Well done. Mike Bennie, WBM June 2013 With high Lenswood pinot and chardonnay fruit and a passion for a traditional champagne style, this has a fresh, citrusausterity with keen herbal and savoury notes, French-like aldehyde and yeast complexity and a clean dryness. Tony Love, Top 100 Wines, The Advertiser Nov 2012 Winemaker Kate Laurie studied in Champagne and has been a finalist in the Vin de Champagne awards, so it is no surprise that this is a wine, 80%pinot noir and 20% chardonnay, crafted in the same mould. Pale in the glass, the nose is perfumed citrus, strawberries, sweet brioche, lemon curd and even red apple. Driven by plenty of acidity, the wine shows ripe strawberries and raspberries sitting atop brioche or pandoro and cut through by lemon. Great length, refreshing and plenty of interest. The flavours linger and linger.
