Our drinks list celebrates the work of independent Australian producers - from Kangaroo Island malbec to sparkling Mudgee merlot and everything in between. We ve travelled the country, meeting the people and exploring the regions that have made Australia such a fascinating place for those who like a good drink. We re very pleased to be able to bring to Canberra an eclectic selection of just some of the remarkable wines made by the excellent men and women winemakers from across Australia. Some wineries and most varietals you will have heard of, but there may be some that you have not. Whether you re here for just a glass, for our changing monthly wine flight, or you re settling in for a bottle or two and a catch up with friends, don t be afraid to explore, leap into the void and ask any question about any of our wines. 4 WINE FLIGHT - MAY 2018 CALL ME BY YOUR NAME Sangiovese Sit back, relax and let us take you on a journey... Who would have thought that we d reach May and would be reminded of Tuscany in September! The weather has inspired us to look to Italy, imagining the undulating hills of the Chianti region where Sangiovese reigns supreme, and warm evenings on the terracotta terraces of orange villas. In the New World of Australia winemakers have put their stamp on the blood of Jupiter (sanguis Jovis) and we ve three cracking examples of arguably Italy s most famous vinous export. We begin with a 2014 Sangiovese from local wine wizard Alex McKay at Collector - one the region s most accomplished wineries. His wine is consistently lauded for its elegance, and the Red Rose City is exactly that. Spiced redcurrent, mulberry and tobacco yield to a rich palate framed by cherries, hints of tar and firm, savoury tannins. It s so good that James Halliday gave it 95 points and marked it as exceptional value for money. Heading south west to South Australia s McLaren Vale we meet The Mongrel a Sangiovese blend from Hugh Hamilton, the recently retired fifth generation winemaker of a family winery of the same name boasting over 180 years of winemaking tradition. This 2016 Sangiovese has all the hallmarks of a bolshie South Australian red wine, perfumed and savoury with petals, cherries, fresh raspberries and texture to tantalise! Somewhat controversially we re completing our journey with a saignée, a delicate pink Sangiovese rosé from Gilbert Family Wines in Mudgee, NSW. This wine has delicate strawberry and nettle leaf aromas with lifted rhubarb and subtle ruby grapefruit flavours.
