2 WELCOME TO THE CAVA ORIGINS Codorníu winery is located just 45 minutes from Barcelona and 30 minutes from Sitges. It is nestled in the Penedès region, a prestigious area of high quality wines and sparkling wines. Codorníu, is synonymous to the history of a family of winegrowers which dates back to the XVI century. It is the oldest family company in Spain and one of the oldest in the world. It has more than 450 years of history to the date. Designed by the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch, the winery buildings were declared a national historic-artistic monument in They represent one of the most prominent examples of art nouveau architecture in our country. Coming to the winery you will discover a property surrounded by nature and vineyards. 4 CODORNÍU S HISTORY The origin of cava is strongly related to the origin of Codorníu. This brand was originally the name of a family of winemakers who cultivated and maintained a unique heritage in Europe for over 450 years. In 1872 Josep Raventós produced cava for the first time following the Traditional Method. He decided to use indigenous grapes from Penedès area for the creation of his sparkling wine: Macabeo, Xarel lo and Parellada. He became a pioneer in his time as He introduced a whole new industry in the region. Manuel Raventós, Codorníu s driving force, hired in 1895 the Modernist architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch (Gaudí s coeval) to enlarge the winery. The building built represents the fruitful alliance between nature and human labor, but at the same time it also constitutes a stone tribute to the silence of cava. Declared National Historical-Artistic Heritage in 1976 it s also one of the most incredible examples of the architecture dedicated to the elaboration and aging of cavas. SINCE The first documented reference to Jaume Codorníu s winegrowing activities Cavas Codorníu is declared a Historical Artistic Monument Josep Raventós creates the first 1872 bottle of cava in Spain using the 2001 Traditional Method Marriage between the heiress Anna Codorníu and winegrow Miquel Raventós. Manuel Raventós gives a big boost to cava and launches Codorníu as a big producer. Plans are made to build the winery, who along with Gaudí was one of the leading exponents of the great school of Catalan Art Nouveau architecture. The inauguration of Cavas Codorníu, a milestone in Catalan Art Nouveau The birth of the leading cava in Spain, Anna de Codorníu which introduces Chardonnay grapes. Codorníu s 450th birthday. Codorníu creates the first rosé cava made 100% from the red Pinot Noir varietal. The birth of Reina Mª Cristina Blanc de Noirs, the first white cava made from Pinot Noir. 8 GENERAL CONDITIONS VISIT TERMS AND CONDITIONS The visit will begin punctually at the specified time. You cannot join the group if you arrive more than 10 minutes after it has started. Visits must be booked in advance because there are a limited number of places. If you come without a prior reservation you may join the group if there are free places. Tours are also organized for people with physical disabilities. For further information contact the winery. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. PAYMENT TERMS Any activity, must be paid at least 3 working days in advance of the visit. If payment is not received within the established time frame, the reservation will be cancelled automatically. Payment may be made by: ~ Credit card: you must send the following information via (reservas@codorniu.com): Credit card holder s name + creditcard number and date of expiry. The amount of the reserved tour + written authorisation from the creditcard holder. 13 CAVA APERITIF 2h The aperitif is one of our great culinary moments. A Codorníu cava, at just the right temperature, is an ideal aperitif, stimulates your appetite and goes well with all sorts of appetizers. The custom of serving cava as an aperitif can be traced back to the changes in cava making in the early eighties. Ideal for this groups who wants to get a deeper experience in cava tasting, this activity can help to the participant to understand the different kinds of products that Codorníu elaborates and why they have different tastings and aromas. 16 LUNCH AMIDST CAVAS 3h The lunch is an informal standing meal. The guests will serve themselves from the different plates. It is not a seated meal, served by waiters. The lunch is served cava, grape juice and water. PINOT NOIR MENU - Prawn brochette. - Brie toast with sobrasada and honey. - Mushroom croquettes. - Pumkim Cream with sunflower seeds. - Trinxat of Cerdanya with black sausage. - Small toast with caramelised foie mi-cuit. - Beef hamburger. - Lentil pearls with cuttlefish. - Dessert: Gelidencs (rolled sheet of sponge cake, with a special cream) - Coffee. Codorníu has the right of deciding in which area inside its facilities will take place the activity. The activity includes 2 different kind of cavas, water, must (grape juice) and coffee. 19 BLIND TASTING CHALLENGE 2h30 Blind tasting and quiz game is the ideal tasting for people who want, not only to try different wines but also who wants to have fun and check their habilities as wine experts. After enjoying the tour through our facilities and learning about cavas, the guests will divide into groups to answer some quick questions after tasting three different cavas. 20 ANNA EXPERIENCE 2h Anna was the last member of the family in bringing Codorníu as a family name. In 1983 we elaborated our first cava with the grape Chardonnay in her honour, Anna de Codorníu. Thirty years later, we would like to surprise you again with a new activity to honour her, the Anna Experience Tour. Come to discover our new venue Anna; a unique, smart and feminine area to enjoy three of our premium cavas paired with special canapes. 21 THE BIRTH OF CAVA 2h30 Experience the amazing transformation of our blending in excellent cavas. Make your own blend! Through a game, participants will be invited to make a blend with the different base wines. With this activity, the participant can imagine how a young wine, acid and with low aromatic intensity becomes a cava with its own personality, complex aromas and persistent taste. HOW DOES IT WORK? The activity starts with the visit, the groups enter to the Audiovisual room. Before starting the projection an explanation about the activity is made. After this brief introduction, the groups leave the audio to start the tour. This visit will last approximately one hour. When the tour ends, begins the activity. DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITY First of all, a presentation of what they should do is done: Learn what are the coupages and the importance for the winemakers of working together, using the material available without having to use more than expected, working in cleanly and tidy way... all this is taken into account when making the assessment activity. What material have on the table and how to use it. Guessing which grape varieties contains the blending that is already done. Tasting of cava of the mysterious blend. Elaboration of a blend as directed by the guides. Tasting of cava that they have just made. Elaboration of a blending (they will have a limited time). Creation of the label and product name. Justification for the choice of the blending. After the activity, the jury will deliberate and shall state which is the winning team. 22 New Activity! ENTRY CODORNÍU QUEST 2h30 Codorníu Quest is an original and funny way to discover Cavas Codorníu and learn the origins of cava. Our clients are an active part of the visit and will take part in a gymkhana around the cellar facilities. A set of skills and ingenuity tests will be waiting for the contestants, who will have to successfully overcome them all during their tour around Codorníu cellars. Emotions, laughter, competitiveness and teamwork will constitute a funny and different day that for sure will also be unforgettable. Codorníu, the oldest winegrowers in Spain and one of the world s oldest family business, is awaiting you to share over 450 years of wine history. Modernism, art, nature, culture, creativity and history are some of the ingredients of this exciting activity we have prepared especially for you to have an amusing time and get to know us a little better. Each team will receive at the beginning a folder containing questions and challenge to be solved during the dinner, that will be the essential part to be able to enjoy the activity. During the whole tours, they will have be guided by a Codorníu tour guide who will make them the explanations, so they do not only need to be looking at the screen but also hearing to the guide and looking around.
