Fall Annual Conference in Corvallis, Oregon The Northwest Center for Small Fruits Research (NCSFR) Annual Conference will be held at the LaSells Stewart Center at Oregon State University USDA HCRL & Repository Tours - Wednesday, Dec. 3 Main Conference Day - Thursday, Dec. 4 & Committee Meetings - Friday, Dec. 5 5) Research Priorities - Commodity Groups During the Annual Conference, time is set aside to revisit the research priorities. Please review them within your commodity groups prior to the conference and come prepared for discussion. To ensure balanced outcomes, we strongly encourage small fruit industry members to attend and participate in these research priority discussions. You can find copies of the most recent priorities at 6) Committee Meetings (After the Conference) Advisory Council Liaison Committee Coordinating Committee RESEARCHER REPORTING INFORMATION INSIDE Evening Presentation with Rufus La Lone We have invited Rufus La Lone to be our guest speaker for the evening festivities at the end of the conference. His talk "Partly to Mostly - Forecasting Weather in the Pacific Northwest" will focus on his volunteer forecasting for agriculture in the PNW. Since the early part of his scientific career, Rufus has been an advocate for the practical application of meteorology in the life sciences. For nearly 30 years, he has prepared Continued On Next Page

2 Page N O R T H W E S T S M A L L F R U I T N O T E S Rufus La Lone Continued From Page 1 weather forecasts for friends and colleagues. In 1994, Rufus initiated his virtual Weather Café. The Weather Café provides uniquely informative long-range forecasts for specific patrons in the PNW. It is a free service for patrons from British Columbia to northern California. In the Spring of 2005, the Council of the American Meteorological Society elected Rufus as a full member of the Society - a long time personal goal. Rufus graduated with honors in Biology from California State University Humboldt and completed a Master's degree in Entomology at Oregon State. Beginning in 1979, Rufus has focused on developing environmentally sound management programs for insects on small fruits and stored grain products. Call for Oregon Wines for the Annual Conference Every year the NCSFR annual conference holds a wine tasting/reception in the evening. As is the tradition, the winemakers of the hosting state provide the wine for the event. So, we are putting out a formal request to the Oregon wineries to please let us know if you can bring some of your latest and greatest vintages to share with our members. 3 N O R T H W E S T S M A L L F R U I T N O T E S - Michael Kahn - NCSFR Director for WSU Michael Kahn, holds a joint appointment as a Professor in the Institute of Biological Chemistry and the School of Molecular Biosciences, and is Associate Director of Washington State University s Agricultural Research Center. He partners with the director of the ARC to administer, lead, and report on research programs in the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences and Agricultural Research Center activities of other affiliated college. Kahn, who has been with WSU for 28 years, has served as associate director of WSU s Institute of Biological Chemistry since The Santa Fe, N.M., native earned a doctorate in biophysics from Stanford University and his bachelor s degree in physics from the California Institute of Technology. Relevant to small fruits, although his orientation/training is mostly in microbiology (he was chair of the department at WSU for several years), he is a member of the Plant Physiology/Molecular Plant Sciences faculty at WSU and has expertise in genetics, plant physiology, and plant-microbe interactions. He also has a fair amount of federal panel experience, serving on NSF, DOE, NIH, and USDA panels and Program Manager for DOE and USDA. Page 3 Larry Curtis - NCSFR Director for OSU Larry Curtis, a nationally known researcher in the field of environmental toxicology, in 2006 became Associate Dean of the College of Ag Sciences at Oregon State University and associate director of the Oregon Agl Experiment Station. Curtis s research focuses on persistent organic pollutants, and he has headed several studies focusing on water pollution, including major studies in the Willamette River. He brings experience in university departmental administration and a broad perspective on the role of research in health and environmental policy. Larry has a strong record of teaching, research, and administration, extensive experience in interdisciplinary team programs and projects, and impressive success in competing for external grant funds to support research and outreach programs in environmental toxicology, said Thayne Dutson, dean of the college. In addition, Curtis has served on the OSU Faculty Senate Executive Committee and the Inter-Institutional Faculty Senate of the Oregon University System. Curtis, an aquatic toxicologist, earned a bachelors degree in biology and a master's degree in marine and environmental biology from the University of South Alabama and his doctorate in pharmacology from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He joined the faculty of the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Oregon State University in 1980, and progressed through the ranks to professor in He served as interim head of that unit in In 1995, Curtis was named chair of the Department of Environmental Health at East Tennessee State University. In 1999, he returned to OSU as professor and head of the Department of Environmental and Molecular Toxicology.

HCRL houses nine USDA ARS small fruits researchers - five funded through the Northwest Center for Small Fruits Research. Also included, will be our three additional NCSFR funded ARS researchers from Washington and Idaho. National Clonal Germplasm Repository Peoria Road The Corvallis Repository maintains collections representing global diversity of hazelnuts, strawberries, hops, mint, pears, currants, gooseberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries. Cultivars (clones) are stored as growing plants, while wild species populations are generally preserved as seed. If you wish to join the tour be sure to check the box on your registration form.

8 Research Reporting Requirements - continued Below are Details for Various Required Reports Oral Final Report for the Annual Conference: If your funded project is completed, you should be prepared to give your final report this year. Please contact us ASAP to confirm so we can determine how much time we'll need to accommodate everyone. (Please Note: If you are unable to attend, please designate someone else to present your report) Poster Session: Bring a poster to the conference that provides an overview of your work. These posters will be displayed during our Poster Sessions in the afternoon and researchers will be required to be available for questions and discussion during this time. DEADLINE FOR ABOVE: Annual Conference Abstract for Pre-Proceedings: Prepare a 1/3 page abstract in nonscientist/layperson language briefly summarizing your work to date. Progress & Final Reports for Proceedings: Prepare a one-two page summary of your work to date. Report should include: title, principal investigator and cooperators, objectives, brief statement of procedures, results, discussion of accomplishments (comparison of actual results with the original goals), potential significance to industry, and funding sources. Research Impact Statements: Prepare 1/2 page outlining the economic, health, food safety or environmental impact your project has made or has the potential to make. Some of these will be selected to present to the United States Congress.
