4 SUPER MALBEC REGIONS SALTA MOLINOS AND CACHI m ASL These wines can often be powerfully concentrated due to cool days and even cooler nights, but with a fierce sun intensity. Very soft tannins and huge luminosity due to this proximity to the sun. Generally high in alcohol and very full bodied, ripe and powerful with plenty of aromatics. The highest vineyards in the world SALTA CAFAYATE 1750m ASL The main town and centre of wine production in Salta and home to Torrontés. Wines of great intensity and full body very soft tannins in the reds, and pronounced flowers and aromatics in the whites. Some of the most terroir-specific wines in the world CATAMARCA FIAMBALA VALLEY 2000m ASL Characterised by small, remote wineries with predominantly organic produce. Some monasteries still produce licoroso wines and a few practise Biodynamic viticulture. Very ripe and soft wines LA RIOJA FAMATINA VALLEY m ASL Many wineries work together under the La Riojana brand. La Rioja is the original home of Torrontés, although subsequent clones of this variety found their way to more fame in Salta. More subdued and mineral versions of Torrontés are good here, as is some excellent Bonarda Argentina SAN JUAN PEDERNAL 1400m ASL High in the second region of Argentina, this area is gaining repute for amazing quality. San Juan is a hot region, being home to the famous Zonda winds, which fire their way down the Andes mountains in November. The best quality Syrah is found here as it likes the heat. Intense and ripe fruits, with soft and ripe liquorice notes SAN JUAN ZONDA AND TULUM m ASL Very hot and dry, a true desert region. The fruit here can be very ripe as a result, with sweet tannins and lots of earthy, liquorice flavours MENDOZA EAST LA PAZ, SANTA ROSA, RIVADAVIA, SAN MARTÍN, JUNÍN 700m ASL Much of the wine for the domestic market is made here, so is often ignored by those seeking high quality wines. But this is the ideal region for old-vine Bonarda Argentina, since it is warmer here. And many of the big players in Argentina are discovering the beauty of this varietal

5 MENDOZA LUJÁN DE CUYO LAS COMPUERTAS, VISTALBA m ASL The highest point of Luján de Cuyo, the most famous region in Mendoza. Ripe and complex, with soft and juicy, sticky black fruits. Plenty of liquorice and anise, with black cherry and rich soft tannins. Star quality MENDOZA LUJÁN DE CUYO MAYOR DRUMMOND AND LUNLUNTA m ASL 20 minutes from the centre of Mendoza city, this region is tucked away behind Luján de Cuyo itself. Old dirt tracks with lines of Alamos trees hide away some of the oldest and most historical vineyards in Argentina. Rich chocolate, sweet spice and dense black fruits combine with dried flowers and violets to make some of the classic wines that made us all fall in love with Argentina MENDOZA LUJÁN DE CUYO AGRELO, PERDRIEL AND UGARTECHE m ASL Agrelo and Perdriel are where you will find most of the famous winery names in Mendoza. Meaty and aromatic wines, with earth and that classic chocolate and black fruit character. Home to many of the remaining old vineyards in Mendoza MENDOZA UCO VALLEY SAN JOSÉ, EL PARRAL, VILLA BASTÍAS, TUPUNGATO, GUALTALLARY, SAN PABLO m ASL To the south west of Mendoza, this is a very cool climate area. Most of the best white wine grapes are found here. These vineyards are very high and also further south. Notable purity of fruit, with mint and graphite. High acidity MENDOZA UCO VALLEY ALTAMIRA, LA CONSULTA, SAN CARLOS, EUGENIO BUSTOS, EL CEPILLO, VISTA FLORES m ASL Currently the go-to place for high quality wines. Very complex soils which change dramatically from lot to lot. Dense fruit, medicinal and herbal notes. Huge minerality, clean, aromatic and fresh. High acidity PATAGONIA RIO NEGRO AND NEUQUÉN m ASL Here it is latitude that lends the cooling influence. Neuquén, uniquely, has been entirely planted from new this century. Mineral and fresh fruits with high acidity. The Rio Negro s old vineyards are more European in style. Elegant, earthy and deep wines with very fine tannins

10 FREDERICO BENEGAS The Benegas Lynch family have long roots in Mendoza, and Frederico makes fine wines of old school elegance. His Finca Libertad vineyard in Cruz de Piedra is home to some of the world s oldest Cabernet Franc. Frederico also has a very fine collection of ponchos SUSANA BALBO Susana has fought her way up to be at the pinnacle of winemaking in Argentina. She has worked in Salta, Mendoza, Patagonia and owns her own winery, Dominio del Plata. Known by many as the Queen of Torrontés, Susana is also head of Wines of Argentina BENEGAS DOS ALTURAS 2011/ m Maipú/ Gualtallary, Mendoza DANIEL PI SUSANA BALBO SUPER MANDALA 2012 Cabernet Franc//Merlot/ Petit Verdot 950m Alto Agrelo, Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza Daniel is head winemaker of Grupo Peñaflor, and so manages the winemaking at five wineries in Salta, San Juan and Mendoza. That he produces such amazing quality at every level is testament to his commitment to excellence. He is also Head Professor at the Don Bosco Oenological University in Mendoza TRAPICHE LAS PIEDRAS m Los Arboles (Single Vineyard) HANS VINDING-DIERS Born in Stellenbosch of Danish heritage and raised on his family wine estate in Bordeaux, Hans has wine in his blood.
