2 I always come back from my trips to South America feeling fired up, enlivened by the vibrant energy of these dynamic countries. Each vintage brings new and exciting wines, vineyards and experiences to share with you and 2016 was no exception; this cooler-climate year has produced a bounty of delicious fresh and aromatic reds and whites. Chilean and Argentine wines are so popular with our members that we ve expanded our range, including a new high-altitude cabernet from Salta, and our popular Society-label Chilean sauvignon blanc has a new source in the shape of an excellent new vineyard in Limarí. I hope my selection of South American wines leaves you as passionate about these fascinating regions as I am. 3 RED WINES Lascar Classic Carmenère 2016 This ripe, round and plummy carmenère is absolutely packed with bold flavours it s called a classic for a reason! 13% ref AM-CE9091 Lascar Classic Merlot 2016 If you are looking for a polished wine at a pocket-friendly price, you can t go far wrong with this delicately spicy, plum-scented merlot.13% ref AM-CE9381 Lascar Classic Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 A round, soft fruit-forward Chilean cabernet sauvignon which tastes more sophisticated than it has any right to considering the price. 13.5% The 2016 follows. ref AM-CE8921 Undurraga Candelabro Reserva Carmenère-Malbec-Carignan- Tempranillo 2014 This ripe and round red shows the delicious hallmark softness of a part barrel-aged blend. The carmenère grape dominates here, with malbec, carignan and tempranillo making up the rest. 14% ref AM-CE bottle 90 dozen Weinert Carrascal Tempranillo 2013 An intriguing Argentine red with floral and lavender notes and some leathery undertones. 4 WINES FROM TOP ESTATES ARGENTINA MENDEL The outstanding winemaker Roberto de la Mota is a partner in this wonderful estate which makes wines with a certain European restraint. The grapes are picked ripe but fresh with the wines showing an attractive supporting structure. The wines, both reds and whites, respond well to decanting and serving with food, which they partner far better than the big, bold fruit bomb styles. NEW La Primera Revancha Mendoza Chenin Blanc 2016 This deliciously ripe and peachy chenin blanc has a lovely backstory: Last year Roberta de la Mota began a sentimental journey to find a vineyard he first made wine from in He eventually rediscovered the land a special selection of chenin blanc planted in the 1940s from which this was then made. Now to % ref AM-AR bottle 155 dozen Mendel Mendoza Semillon s very cool weather has produced a crop of unusually fresh and vibrant Argentine whites; this is one of them. Greengage-fruit flavours and a light oak aroma add interest to the freshness. Part barrel-aged. Mendel Mendoza Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 A classy cedar-and-violet scented cabernet which is aged for a year in barrel. This is best decanted 20 minutes before drinking. The warm 2014 vintage has imbued this lightly oaked wine with bramblefruit flavours and round, sweet tannins. Now to % ref AM-AR bottle 192 dozen Mendel Unus, Mendoza 2013 You ll find lovely floral and cedary aromas in this blend of malbec, cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot. 5 SUSANA BALBO It s always a joy to taste and learn with Susana. I visit her early in the season to get a chance to choose the best wines before they are blended. The Delphina that we are offering this year may just be her best ever wine. NEW Susana Balbo Chacayes Single Vineyard Malbec Mendoza 2016 An intensely aromatic and floral-flavoured red which was specially bottled for us by Susana. The 2016 vintage was a cool year, producing wines that combine intensity with persistence of flavour, such as this. Susana Balbo Private Edition Blend for The Wine Society 2016 A lovely ripe yet fresh blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and petit verdot, aged in barrel for ten months. From a cool vintage, this combines juicy blackcurrant-fruit flavours with with a cedary top note. Now to % ref AM-AR bottle 179 dozen Susana Balbo Brioso Mendoza 2014 This rich and opulent Bordeaux-style red is cabernet-dominated but with an Argentine twist of malbec. The fleshy palate is underpinned by a firm structure to create a balanced blend. Aged in barrel. Majestic peaks of Los Kuernos over Lake Pehoe. 55MALBEC Jeff Mausbach and Alejandro Sejanovich are the owners of this excellent company, named after their Tomal vineyard which they originally thought was planted in 1955, but was actually planted way back in 1940! This year we are delighted to add a lovely firm, fresh unoaked chardonnay to our Zaha range, to be followed by the Zaha Marsanne 2016 later in the year. Zaha Toko Vineyard Paraje Altamira Malbec 2014 A ripe yet fresh malbec, with a caressing silky palate and exqusite fine-grained texture. The malbec here is blended with both cabernet franc and petit verdot for extra complexity, before 14 months of barrel-ageing. 6 WINES FROM TOP ESTATES CHILE VERAMONTE This up-and-coming vineyard is managed by Rodrigo Soto, a brilliant young viticulturist and winemaker. Rodrigo s passion, dedication and willingness to adapt and change is apparent in both his grapes and the excellent wines they produce. Primus Apalta Carmenère 2014 This powerful, sensuous carmenère is lifted by an appealing freshness, making it very moreish indeed. From Apalta, a warm vineyard in the Colchagua valley ideal for making ripe reds. TABALÍ Tabalí make wonderfully fresh and invigorating wines at their cool-climate Limarí Valley estate. NEW Talinay Limarí Coastal Limestone Vineyard Chardonnay 2015 Taut, firm fresh chardonnay from a special vineyard, not far from the sea. It has rapidly become the source of some of Chile s best chardonnay. 6 NEW Tabalí Reserva Limited Edition Peumo Carmenère 2014 A superb, silky carmenère, with sweet tannins, ripe fruit and an exquisite cedary perfume. 7 KOYLE Cristobal Undurraga is one of the few viticulturists who live on the vineyard they make wine from. The vineyard is located in Alto Colchagua, Rapel, where he lives with his wife and three children, and they keep horses, a few hundred sheep to mow the grass, some pigs, geese and hens. He is a great observer of natural phenomena, completely in touch with the soils and landscapes of his vineyards (unusual among Chilean winemakers) which is reflected in the estate s transition to organic and biodynamic viticulture. His vineyard is producing some truly remarkable wines. Koyle Costa Rapel Coastal Pinot Noir 2014 A restrained, elegant pinot from fruit grown on quartz and granite soils, this shows more freshness and grip than is usual in a Chilean red. Now to % ref AM-CE bottle 131 dozen The vineyards of the Alto Maipo are close to the Andes mountains whose cool air moderates the temperature to produce ideal conditions. Koyle El Peuco Alto Colchagua Tempranillo-Mourvèdre 2013 An intense and delicious marriage of sweet oak and spicy fruit, with a velvety palate resulting from 18 months barrel ageing. The El Peuco of the name means Harris Hawk, so-called in honour of the pair which have made the Koyle estate their home. Now to % ref AM-CE bottle 138 dozen Koyle Cerro Basalto Cuartel G2 Carmenère 2015 One of the finest carmenères I have ever tasted in Chile, this sweet, cedar-scented red is from a hillside vineyard where the roots of vines plunge deep into the rock. The altitude and small yield explain the great quality here. Aged for 18 months in barrels, this second vintage is even better than the superb debut vintage.
