3 Loving Lunch Program A few months ago, I introduced this program asking for any monetary donation to treat a senior to lunch. So far, it has been very successful and I appreciate your generosity. Many free lunches have already been provided to our deserving seniors. The program will continue. If you would like to contribute, please stop in The Center or you can submit a check made payable to: The James F. McGuire Senior Center. As always, I am grateful for your support! Some Handy Hints to Keep Produce from Going Bad Slimy Mushrooms Keep mushrooms in a paper bag NOT plastic. Mushrooms are a delicious, hearty ingredient to use in everything from a chopped salad to a morning omelet to a stir-fry, but nothing is more unappetizing than reaching in for the vegetable and pulling out a slimy, mushy mess! To keep mushrooms meaty and fresh for as long as possible, it s all about how you store them. Plastic bags trap in moisture that causes the mushrooms to mildew. Opting for paper bags allows the vegetable to breath and moisture to escape. Rubbery Celery Wrap in aluminum foil and store in the refrigerator. Celery is one of those vegetables that can quickly go from crisp and crunchy to rubbery and tasteless. After separating, washing, and drying the stalks, wrap them tightly in alumnimum foil. This keeps the air out and moisture in but still allows the ethylene gas to escape as opposed to plastic bags which trap it in. Mushy Bananas Wrap tops of bananas in plastic wrap. To preserve bananas, simply wrap the stems tightly in plastic wrap. WINTER IS HERE! I guess we couldn t avoid it any longer the snow has fallen and the cold weather has arrived! During the winter months, it is a time for all of us to take precaution with trying to remain cold and flu free, as well as avoiding falls. Below are some helpful steps to protect yourself: Get vaccinated (if you haven t already done so). Avoid coughing or sneezing into your hands use your arm instead. This helps to prevent the spread of germs. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Exercise as often as possible. Get plenty of vitamin E. Consider foods rich in zinc. Watch your weight. Drink plenty of fluids. Wash your hands long and often (recite the ABC s). Get plenty of rest. Understand and know your body. Our Crochet Club is always busy making numerous blankets, hats and scarves for those in need. We are always in need of yarn to replenish our stock. If you would like to contribute, multi-varigated pounds are needed the brand name is Caron or Red Heart 4-ply soft. No wool please. Any donation you can provide is greatly appreciated!

5 From the desk of Arlene Rosa The Golden Age Club We had a wonderful turnout for our January meeting and added 8 new members. Just a brief reminder that all dues are to be paid by March 1 st. We will continue to sign-up and collect money for our February 22 nd luncheon at the 76 House. Also, we are collecting for the March 21 st trip to LiGreci s for the Feast of St. Joseph. Stay warm! ***SOME CHANGES*** All the Best As you may know, Peggy Raso has been with The James F. McGuire Senior Center for 20 years. Peggy was hired as a vendor in the position of Program Activities Coordinator. Some of her responsibilities included: coordinating all presentations/speakers, the Book Club, Armchair Traveler, local town newspaper advertisements, selection of movies and the Mitten Tree just to name a few. Peggy also acted as the temporary Director during the illness and unfortunate passing of Dolores Alfis. Unfortunately, due to budgetary constraints, we are unable to continue supporting the financial means of this position. Therefore, January 31, 2017, Peggy will be leaving us. However, her expertise will not go unnoticed. I am sure you all wish her All the Best as I do, in her new journey! Warm regards, Pam, Staff Members & Friends of The James F. McGuire Senior Center Unfortunately, at this time, The McGuire Book Club will be cancelled. Upon its return, it will be advertised in our Newsletter. My apologies for the inconvenience. Van Service to Shop-Rite will be on Tuesday & Thursday at 10:00 am. Please call The Center to make your appointment. COMING NEXT MONTH!
