1 Glencoe Farmers Market Survey Results August 20th, 2015 Response Rate: 100 individuals have taken the survey to date. 93% of those have attended the Glencoe Farmers Market. Nearly half of all respondents (44%) attended a few times during the season; 23% attended weekly. Primary issues noted include the size of the market being too small / too few of vendors; other farmers markets are less expensive and provide more options in regards to types of goods; and the location of the market was not visible and/or ideal. When asked whether they would support an improved Glencoe Farmers Market, respondents were overwhelmingly positive: 87% - yes In regards to day and time, the majority of respondents (67%) prefer Saturday Mornings. When asked what items are most desirable, fresh produce was ranked #1 (25%) followed closely by flowers/plants (21%); fresh eggs, cheese, meat and fish ranked #3 (15%) and baked goods ranked #4 (13%). Respondents noted attending a variety of other farmers markets including Northbrook, Wilmette, Evanston, Highland Park, Botanic Gardens, Highwood, Ravinia, and Downtown Chicago

11 Additional Comments Posted to the Farmers Market Survey page on the Glencoe TuneUp Website June 21, 2015 I would recommend the Highwood version of the market- a late afternoon destination with families and shoppers, food to eat on the spot, food and flowers to take home, people getting off the train and stopping by already in town. It is a successful model that I would love to see in Glencoe. I spoke to the village staff about this. Please call me if you want any further input, and please let me know if there are any meetings to discuss. June 23, 2015 My experience with Glencoe s farmers market was not good because the fruit was less ripe than what I could purchase in nearby supermarkets. The concept of providing freshly picked fruit and produce, which had reached full ripeness and thus short shelflife before being picked, was not in evidence. June 23, 2015 The village did not treat the suppliers well, they moved them from east to west to east of the tracks. They were poorly publisized. Just a few years ago we had French nuns selling baked goods, a pie seller, guys in from Chicago selling tea and iced coffees, etc, all gone to greener pastures. If the village had an event or needed parking, the farmers market people were shuttled across the tracks near the train station, guaranteeing very few people venturing over the tracks- away from the action! Glencoe screwed the suppliers by their dumb moves, showing a complete lack of business sense! July 22, 2015 I would highly recommend the downtown evanston farmers market held on saturdays for anyone who really wants an amazing selection of goods. We could not replicate that in Glencoe, but great products (i.e. locally raised, picked within 24 hours and ripe) at great prices would go over well, even if it is just the basics. I d give anything for a truly vine ripened tomato at times. Maybe we need to talk to the farmers at the Evanston market to find out if they would be interested in participating in a Glencoe farmer s market, on a different day. Let me know if I can help in any way. July 24, 2015 I enjoy going to the Libertyville Farmer s Market on Thursday mornings. There is a variety of vendors including soap, a knife sharpener, fruits, veggies, flowers, handmade dog treats, and other non traditional market items. Consider getting in touch with Libertyville about their market. August 4, 2015 Maybe a Market in the middle of the week at the Train Station to appeal to everyone including commuters coming home. But the produce HAS to be fresh. I believe that is the key ingredient to a successful Farmer s Market. August 10, 2015 Oh: I forgot to say in the survey: I would prefer locally grown and ORGANIC produce. Michael La Porte also has a very good additional dynamic, CSA, like King s Hill. 11
