Over the last four millennia this simple green leaf, has shaped empires, commerce and technology from the Far East to the Americas & to Europe. The influence Tea has had on the history of the modern world is truly intriguing and cannot be told simply. This year in Colombo we will tell the story of Ceylon Tea as, 150 years of the Tea industry in Sri Lanka will be celebrated.from the initial clearing of jungles and hills to the planting of millions of tea bushes by intrepid Scottish, Irish and English planters to the modern era, where Sri Lankan farmers as small holders have overtaken the now management company estate sector by producing more than 70% of green leaf which is manufactured into black tea. This revolution began in the 1960 s and from the original Mid Country, Western, Central and Eastern slopes, tea has spread around the South West Low Country areas. Having joined the Tea trade way back in 1966, I have seen this evolution and with this our green gold continues to play a major role in our economy. Tea ensured the development of Roads, Railways, Transport, Warehousing, Blending, Packaging, Printing, Insurance, Shipping, Banking, Forestry, Multi crops, Tourism, Brokerage, you name it the roots of tea have spread through out the business world of Sri Lanka. Whilst we have faced and continue to face many different issues related to climate change, and market conditions the industry continues to be full of potential.
