The 2016 survey will be circulated in August and I would like to encourage all residents to take some time to complete the survey. The results are analysed and acted upon, and this exercise provides us with a valuable management tool for our estate. The survey will be in the same format as last year s to identify trends, and we hope to communicate the 2016 survey results much sooner now that we have established a baseline to work from. Our annual financial statements for 2015/2016 were also finalised recently, with the financial performance for this financial year communicated to members some time ago. These financial statements have been approved by the Audit and Risk Committee as well as the Board of Directors and will be formally approved by members at the next Annual General Meeting. The Association s financial positon continues to show an improving trend and is in no small part due to the efforts of our Financial Director and our financial staff to contain costs, ensure accurate reporting and maintain effective control over our entire finance function. With the irrigation project and cart path upgrades around the golf course well underway, we are currently focussing on some other items in the 2016/2017 capital budget such as the street corner flower boxes, service yard upgrades and, of course, the additional tennis courts. We have obtained a full costing for the new courts, which has come in well above the initial pricing we budgeted for, and are currently relooking at the capital expenditure priorities to at least build one additional court this year. We will keep members up to date on this particular project. Living in a secure environment such as Silver Lakes has many advantages, and the security factor is probably the main reason most of us choose to live here. But Silver Lakes has so much more to offer than a safe environment and a golf course. We have fantastic clubhouse facilities, a wildlife reserve on our doorstep and a great location on the urban edge. The developments planned around our estate will, however, impact on the already stretched infrastructure serving the area. Management is constantly assessing these developments on the potential impact they may have on our estate, but it is becoming increasingly clear our infrastructure will be under more and more strain as new developments are rolled out around us. 8 the History of Muirfield, UK by: Yolandi Annandale Before we get to the history of Muirfield, a bit of background. In 1744 the Town Council of Edinburgh required proper rules to be produced in order to play the game of golf. The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers accordingly wrote the thirteen Original Rules of Golf. According to these rules, it was established that John Rattray was the first winner of the Club s first competition. In 1775 the rules of the game were revised and then again in After the revision of the rules, they were expanded. The Royal & Ancient Golf Club helped The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers with these changes and expansions of the rules. The Royal & Ancient Golf Club later received full authority to all changes and decisions regarding the rules. Some time later, the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers was financially mismanaged, resulting in the sale of the original clubhouse. The Company moved to Musselburgh in In 1868 the Club built a clubhouse where golf players could store their clubs. This, however, cost golfers an annual subscription fee. Due to overcrowding (because the Musselburgh course was shared by four clubs), the Club moved to yet another place, The Howes. It was here that Tom Morris designed a course called Muirfield. Within its first year it hosted the Open Championships. The Honourable Company has its own culture of golf and that is the two-ball match. It can be either singles or foursomes. Other games have been allowed on occasion. Medal competitions are held in spring and in autumn where they cater for the players who like to play their games with pencil and card. The Company rules regarding who can play when are as follows: Male members are always welcome to play as they pay a subscription fee whereas any other male golfer is only allowed to play on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Ladies may play any day of the week, whether they are members or not. THE CLUBHOUSE The Clubhouse was built in 1891 by Hall Blyth. He built the Clubhouse in an Elizabethan style with interesting patterns. He was an engineer rather than an architect, but he started something which over the years got extended into a clubhouse that complements the landscape and the other buildings. The Clubhouse was built in such a fashion to bring character to the building and to the course. The Clubhouse consists of a few rooms including the Ladies Locker Room, the Smoking Room, the Captain s Room, the Men s Locker Room, the Muirfield Room, and finally the Dining Room. If you ever find yourself in the UK, do yourself a favour by going to play a round of golf and having lunch at Muirfield where the qualified staff will look after you with good service and a smile! 12 DANIE VAN NIEKERK ESTATE MANAGER UPGRADE OF CLUBHOUSE FACILITIES Construction work on the project has essentially been completed. The contractor is finalising snag list matters and repair work. The temporary contractor site office, screening and yard have been cleared from the parking area. A water leak was detected at the eastern open patio above the new covered walkway. This necessitated lifting part of the tiles and screed to expose the defect. Improved waterproofing has been applied. The screed and tiles have been replaced. Upgrade and re-fitment of members bar is in progress by the operator, Café 41. Installation of the new tap bar-counter facility adjacent to the members bar is in process by the operator, Café 41. Fitment of the convenient facility downstairs is in process by the operator, Café 41. 13 UPGRADE OF LYNWOOD GATE FIBRE TO THE HOME (FTTH) The repositioning and installation of the security gates to the garages and post boxes area just outside the Lynnwood gate are nearing completion. Electrical installation and matching paving have also been completed. Final painting, landscaping and cleaning will follow in due course. These gates will be monitored and managed by the security staff. The Telkom-appointed contractor is still busy with the installation of the sleeves (green pipes) into the existing underground infrastructure on the estate. On 13/07/2016, at the official bi-weekly FTTH meeting with Telkom officials and their contractor, they reported meters of the meter underground installation have been completed. Some images: The installation of meters overhead cabling will commence on Monday 18 July (The overhead cabling will be done in the same place where the current overhead cabling infrastructure exists). Difficulty installing the sleeves due to blockages and/or damages in the existing underground infrastructure is still experienced, which causes some delays. However, the contractor is still confident that installation will be completed by August 2016 for testing and commissioning of the new FTTH network. As reported before, installation to the individual homes will commence thereafter as per application -- to those who completed and submitted the necessary application form. Application forms are available on our website as well as at the HOA offices. GOLF COURSE IRRIGATION SYSTEM (UPGRADE) The installation of the new upgraded irrigation system on the golf course is in process. The contractor is confident that the project will be completed as scheduled. The site handover was done on 10 June 2016 and the duration of the project is estimated to take 3 months per phase. The work will be performed as per approved budget and in 2 phases: Phase 1 will be the done on the back nine -- holes 10 to18 during this financial year. Phase 2 will be done on the front nine -- holes 1 to 9 in the new financial year. New gate and wall nearing completion Various identified areas will be used to stockpile materials in order to ensure effective handling of materials and to assist workers/machinery with easier access to the work areas. The existing pump house will also be upgraded by re-using existing compatible equipment. All the required civil work to the pump house will only be done closer to/during Phase 2. 18 CORLIA MATHEWS ENVIRONMENT, SOCIAL & ETHICS DIRECTOR Environmental and Social Report Another month has passed and we are now really into winter. I started writing this article after we had the most wonderful warm weather in June and then the cold came. Cloudy, grey and cold. In time our wonderful winter sun glanced out again and winter was once more just a bit chilly with a lacing of sunshine to put the smiles back on our faces. already a way into the investigation. We will keep you updated. In this investigation we will be looking into the following: Confirmation of the sizes of the dams The sizes of dam walls need to be confirmed If any of the dams need to be registered Positions and use of boreholes The existing water-use entitlements established and either confirmed or re-issued by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) If the rehabilitation activities are fully compliant with current legislation If the new, more effective irrigation system may be installed since it will be water effective and environmentally compatible. The map included below shows all 10 the dams and some areas of concern such as where there are too many reeds or erosion which has to be prevented and all the different man-made elements of the Silver Lakes River System. The winter bulbs are blooming and the last splattering of the unexpected winter rain kept our dams full and our lawns green. We did a survey of our beautiful golf course and stream, and while cycling all along the route I once again realised how fortunate we are to live on this wonderful estate. As you will remember from a month or so ago, we are busy with all our investigations into the legality of our water licenses. After inviting quotes, we have appointed Schoeman en Vennote and we are Some of the existing elements are the bridges and weirs of the original application of establishment of the estate and golf course. Obviously we will have to do some maintenance, and these items need to be done over the winter season when the water in the dams are at their lowest. We will also discuss this with Water Affairs, as well as the allowed activities and the way forward. The large dam at 13th and 14th as well as most of the rest of the dams were the original farm dams and we are fortunate to have the use of these dams not only to beautify our golf course, but also to act as habitat for many water fowl, fishes and other species, such as Rory, our Cape Clawless Otter we rescued last year. 19 Our irrigation dams and some of the reeds that need removal. We will go ahead with the recalmation and protection work as soon as possible. Reeds, although a filter, can become a big problem, starving the water of oxygen and instead of filtering water from polution, they can become a polutant all the rubbish of the area and upstream get caught in the reeds. At the fence behind the T-box of the 5th fairway, the water leaves the golf course and flows through the fence into the game reserve. Here we have pollution. Some of our dams are infested with water grasses as seen in the following pictures: Ceratophyllum demersum ( coon tail from that the plant looks like the tail of a raccoon) or hornwort. It might have been caused by dumping of fish from home aquariums into our system. We ask all our homeowners to PLEASE refrain from dumping unwanted fish into our river system since this can be the outcome and to get rid of the problem in only one dam costs nearly R200,000. I am not only asking this because it may have happened. I actually INTRA MUROS AUGUST I 2016 (19) DESIGNED BY I PISTACHIO DESIGNS

20 saw two children walking down to the stream on the 8th, opening a plastic bag and doing just that some time ago. I was so flabbergasted that I did not say anything. In the meantime, I found out that one can get a very heavy fine if Water Affairs catches one doing it. PLEASE help us keep our stream, estate and game reserve clean from infestations, rubbish and dumping. On the dumping side, I must please also ask all: do NOT go and dump your cut grass or plants in the game reserve or on the open stands in the estate. Gabions were used in areas. Some need maintenance and suggestions for new erosion protection gabions are promoted. Some of the activities that need to happen during the year, and obviously some during winter time, in and around our waterways are as follows: The water of the dams is tested twice a season or more when necessary. An active fishing club on the estate manages the fishing activities on the estate. The fishing club are also involved in the infestations regarding the weeds and water grasses. A newly started bird club will also get involved in creating nesting and living areas for water fowl and other birds. Some erosion protection has already been done. This needs to be followed up by new erosion protection and restoring some of the older protection areas. Some filling and grassing of areas along the stream is suggested to prevent marshy patches. Removing of excessive reeds and weeds as already mentioned elsewhere in the article and in previous articles. INTRA MUROS AUGUST I 2016 (20) DESIGNED BY I PISTACHIO DESIGNS

21 This is just some of the work that needs to be done over the winter season. We will also be tackling the gardens at the new gate house and Silver Lakes Drive as well as the sidewalks of Pebble Beach. Our design teams are looking at solutions as I am writing this article so we can look forward to a beautiful new look and feel for the Silver Lakes Drive entrance gate in the summer! We will also replace all those cracked windows and make a plan so that all our gate houses look neat and tidy. On the lively side of living in Silver Lakes, it is always fun visting the Club House and our new Kids Play Area. We are still busy with the gardens and facilities at the Club House, and hopefully all will be done in the new season. Enjoy the photographs on the next pages of our wonderful Youth Day celebrations. See you all soon at our Women s Day and Spring Day events. Important: please support our Silver Lakes Charity Golf Day (Date to be Advised) we are going to try and see if we can collect as close to R1,000,000 as posible for the charities we support. This way we can make a definite and permanent difference in the lives of those less fortunate. Join us in the fun activities for golfers and non-golfers, and come and donate freely. See you all there, and if you want to book a 4-ball or sponsor a hole, contact Bobby at the Club: Hope to see you all there and enjoy the month of August! This will help you focus on swinging around your body rather than up and down, which we are inclined to do. This adds speed and distance to your clubhead. At the golf course, spend a bit more time with your driver and wood club than the rest of your long clubs in your bag. You will be using them more frequently so take them our for a good workout. #2 Give yourself room to rip it: As dangerous as this might sound, it basically means to stand with a wide stance, ball forward, putting all your weight on your right side, shoulders tilted so that your head is in line with your shoulders. Your driver club must be far enough to be able to do a big, powerful swing. The golden rule is to having the end of the driver club an open -hand distance away from your body. #3 Resist with the hips: It s all in the hips, meaning that the more your shoulders are relative to your hips, the more momentum you create for the downswing. Your hips will unwind naturally and your shoulders will follow, creating a downswing like a slingshot. To further feel the separation between your upper and lower body, turn your right toe in slightly. This will prevent your right hip from overturning on the backswing. #4 Swing through and not to the ball: Most beginners try to slap the ball or scoop it up into the air. This causes the club to slow down and there is no build-up of speed, which is crucial for a good tempo in golf. To develop a good tempo and acceleration, try practice with your headcover on your driver. The additional resistance will help you push through the impact into a full finish. This will help you use tempo and to generate enough speed and power. #5 Shift your weight: To enable the ball to obtain more distance, rotate from your core through the shot so that your weight finishes on your left side. To check this, at the end of your shot your thighs should be close enough to fit a sheet of paper between them and an inverted V should form from your knee down. If the V is too far apart and your knees are not together, your weight is not on the right side. Reduce the size of the V and your balance and ball distance will be improved. 30 MY LOVE AFFAIR WITH COFFEE by: Koos Marais Some of my fondest childhood memories feature the image of a wood-fired Aga stove on a Highveld farm, between Witbank and Bethal, and a black frying pan with someone roasting coffee beans in the pan, carefully stirring the beans until they turned a glistening black, like polished leather, and the deep aroma carried by only the faintest wisps of smoke rising from the pan filling the kitchen and spilling over into the rest of the large farmhouse. Later on, the coffee would be ground in a hand grinder and brewed in a cotton bag inside a tall coffee pot on the black Aga. My coffee would then be laced with fresh farm milk and sugar, and I would enjoy it with my grandmother s aniseed rusks. My wonder and awe at that coffee is an experience I can still recall in the finest detail. plastic container held the filter paper with the ground coffee. Hot water was added and it dripped through into the coffee pot. The plate would keep the coffee hot, and in some cases it was kept there for hours or even the whole day. Today I frown and even get a little unwell at the thought of that bitter brew. The coffee percolator was superseded by the French press, the bodum or plunger. The one good thing it did was to do away with that infernal hot plate. With the French press one had to serve the coffee right away, thereby avoiding the trap of coffee made an hour ago and sitting on that hot plate brewing (whatever that means) into that bitter, undrinkable mixture. I have since evolved into the worst of coffee snobs, and I am not even ashamed of it. I lost the sugar and milk 40 years ago, but my early fascination has intensified into a fierce obsession ruling and dictating my movement and existence. My mantra has become, If there is no good coffee, I either don t go or I take my own. That goes for long holidays, short holidays, brief weekends, or even an invited breakfast. The first real magic happened when I learnt the difference between arabica and robusta. These are the two strains of coffee. I hasten to say that the only real coffee is arabica robusta is a cheap imitation of coffee. Perhaps it should not even be considered coffee. Robusta is always bitter, requiring the addition of sugar and milk. It is one of life s bitter (intended) ironies that the majority of people go through life without ever appreciating the sweet, soothing, beautiful taste and smell of pure arabica. It is a fact that many restaurants, hotels and coffee shops exploit the cheap robusta and serve it either pure or mixed with a little arabica. I maintain that that is why many people continue to drink coffee with additives, thereby denying themselves one of life s true great pleasures. And then came the espresso machine, more or less a decade ago. For the first time it was possible to drink barista-style coffee right in the comfort of your home. Espresso is made by forcing steam through a tightly compacted packet of finely ground coffee. Special, expensive machinery was always required but, finally, affordable machines for home use came to the market. Everybody can now have real espresso, at the push of a button. Sadly, even this technology is open for abuse by robusta scammers. No device can miraculously give you the soul-soothing experience of arabica coffee when using cheap robusta. The combination of arabica coffee and a proper espresso machine is the secret to state-of-the-art coffee. It is also highly addictive. Once one has become accustomed to this sensual, life-giving, inspiring moment of satisfaction, nothing else will do.i learnt it the hard way. Over the years the remorseless march of technology has influenced my understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of coffee to the extent that my options have become very limited. Fortunately, my enjoyment of coffee has marched in step with the increase in the sophistication of the technology, one of the few fields of human culture where this is true. Even though my coffee now comes at the price of modern technology, the joy and pleasure I derive from it justifies it all. First the old cotton bag had to give way to the magic of a coffee percolator. The glass coffee pot sat atop a hot plate. Overhead a INTRA MUROS AUGUST I 2016 (30) DESIGNED BY I PISTACHIO DESIGNS

31 Many years ago I bought my first espresso machine. Soon the coffee habit became an obsession and some will say an addiction. It became impossible to drink any coffee except my own. I learnt not to trust the innocent little question, Coffee or tea? My taste receptors rebelled against the vile, bitter liquid my friends, family, colleagues and acquaintances served in the same manner as proper coffee. I learned to decline all invitations for coffee, often to the chagrin and annoyance of my best friends. My devotion to coffee came at the cost of relationships, I guess. However hard I tried, I could not bring myself to drink the liquid disguised as coffee by my well-meaning friends. The challenges of travel were suddenly compounded by my dedication and dependence on coffee, the real stuff. I met this challenge by travelling with my espresso machine. Everywhere I went, I took my espresso machine. It was a small price to pay for that heavenly first cup of coffee at the break of dawn every morning. At the time I was in the fortunate position of owning and flying my own aircraft, a Cessna 210. It had just enough space for a rather bulky espresso machine, and more than one lodge owner or safari operator frowned incredulously at this interesting piece of luggage that emerged from the tiny cockpit. I insisted. A week, weekend, or even one day without high quality coffee was a burden too ghastly to consider. I needed my coffee and I would have it, come what may. Life became somewhat easier when the next piece of technology appeared on the horizon, the world-acclaimed George Clooney Nespresso. The old, bulky espresso machine became an idle mantlepiece. Nespresso is the crown of the Nestlé corporation s products. Everything about the product shouts quality and excellence: the machines, the capsules, the packing, the pamphlets, and most of all the taste and aroma. I became totally devoted to Nespresso. The device is also more compact, affording easier travel. Life was good. I could go anywhere and have my coffee, but one problem remained: I always required electricity for the Nespresso. The problem is that the best places in Africa don t always have electricity. Though small, the Nespresso was also still quite bulky. I dreamt and googled for a device smaller than even the Nespresso; a portable, in the real sense, espresso machine. Then I came upon it, the miracle, the most wonderful machine devised by mankind, yes even better than an aeroplane, the miracle that is the Handpresso. It is a small, handheld, hand-operated device made in France. I tried everything for more than a year to import one into South Africa, but the French did not seem to be interested then. One Sunday evening, strolling through Brooklyn Mall, I saw it in the window of The Coffee Company! The next day I became the proud owner of South Africa s first Handpresso. It uses special coffee pods and produces the same magical crema, the foam adorning the head of any cup of proper espresso. And most of all, it gives the exact same taste and aroma. The Handpresso is pumped like a bicycle pump, hot water is added, a coffee pod is placed in position, the lid is closed and the button is depressed. The brew exits the nozzle is a quiet, dignified way until the crema escapes in a definitive hiss, indicating the start of a most pleasurable experience. No electrical power is needed. The device is compact, almost fitting into a small ladies handbag, and functions easily and unfailingly. I now had the luxury and the freedom of travel with coffee, be it to the wilderness of Cape Vidal, the bush of Botswana or even, with the aid of a Thermos flask, inside the cockpit of my little Cessna. I was now able to make my own espresso when my friends asked, Coffee or tea? When a hotel or lodge did not have an espresso machine, I could quickly satisfy my craving. I surfed the website, and learnt that they also sell a few other accessories as well as a cigarette lighter-operated espresso machine, the Motopresso. I saw that they ran a photo competition. Devotees were invited to send photographs showing the Handpresso being operated in weird and wonderful places. I duly entered the competition with a photograph of me and my wife on the beach at Cape Vidal, complete with the little fire on the beach and our Handpresso and cups of espresso, with the fishing rods in the background. To our great surprise, we won the competition and received a Motopresso as our prize. I now travel the sub-continent with three espresso machines. If I can, I always pack the Nespresso, for its ease of operation and special taste. If I have electricity the Nespresso is the default option. I have used electricity in some fanciful places for one simple reason only: Nespresso. In the car I always have the Motopresso I won in the competition. The taste and smell of freshly brewed espresso, slowly sipped at 120 kilometres per hour, adds another dimension to a road trip. Stowed in the back of my AHA camping kitchen will be my Handpresso, to be unearthed for the next morning s first espresso somewhere in Africa s wilderness. Life has taught me a few lessons, the most important being that I am not special. Second to that is that life is too short for bad coffee. So please try and understand it is nothing personal when next you ask me Coffee or tea? and my eyes glaze over. Please be ready to open a bottle of good red wine instead if you do not have Nespresso or a decent espresso machine filled with a supply of Arabica coffee beans. 34 THE COOK ON THE CORNER A WOMAN WORTH CELEBRATING Happy Women s Month! With spring just around the corner, it s time to spoil the beautiful, strong and intelligent women around you. I am a huge believer in women s rights and the empowerment of women, and I have always worked alongside organisations that promote such values. In a certain way you could almost assume that I m a feminist, although I d be the first to highlight that that is probably an unfair assessment. The thing is, I grew up in a family with extremely strong women. My grandmother was a survivor living into her deep seventies, having lost her parents, her husband, 3 children, all her siblings and most of her friends. Still, she had a do what needs to be done attitude, inspiring me with her spunky spirit until the very end. My mother was a queen a beautiful, strong woman who taught me to stand up for those who can t stand up for themselves; to always do what is right, even in the face of adversity. I got such a large part of who I am from my mother, and now that I m older and hopefully a little wiser I understand why she taught us the way she did or why she required certain behaviour or discipline from us. After Mom died, our beautiful aunt (who happened to live next door) took over the Mother Hen role in our lives. We had always been close, growing up as much in her house as in ours, but she graciously took over most of the duties that my mom used to perform. Our houses had gates linking the two gardens, and our aunt had a huge garden with a trampoline and a swimming pool, which meant that we naturally gravitated towards her. She is an incredibly graceful woman, soft as a cloud and with a heart of gold. She taught me that it s good to be soft, it s okay to be fragile, and that love is the most important thing you can give to another person. Seline van der Wat Altogether, although all these women were so different from one another, they all contributed strongly to who I became. We need to allow ourselves to learn from people that are different from ourselves and we also need to learn to celebrate the differences between people. It makes our world not only beautiful, but functional too. INTRA MUROS AUGUST I 2016 (34) DESIGNED BY I PISTACHIO DESIGNS

35 Our mother was definitely not a whizz in the kitchen, but she was very good at making comfort food. Our favourite treat as children was to have flapjacks for breakfast. Mom made them most Sundays, using the gorgeous smell of these fat little cakes to pull us out of bed in the morning. These flapjacks are super easy to make. In fact, I used this exact recipe to teach the Silver Lakes teenagers how to make these at Youth Day! May you constantly be inspired by those around you while inspiring them in turn, and may you always strive to be a woman worth celebrating. MOM S (IN)FAMOUS FLAPJACKS Our cookbook, TWO By Seline and Leandri, was recently awarded an international Gourmand AWARD! Get your hands on it before it sells out, and morph from home cook to MasterChef! AVAILABLE at bookstores countrywide or on TakeAlot.com for R300, or as an ebook online. INGREDIENTS: 2 eggs 125ml white sugar 250ml milk 500ml plain flour 15ml baking powder 2.5ml salt 30ml melted butter assorted toppings to serve 1. Beat the eggs and sugar together until light, pale and fluffy. The easiest is to use an electric mixer. 2. Add the mix and stir to combine. 3. Sift in the flour, baking powder and salt, and mix with a wooden spoon until well combined. Lastly, add the melted butter and mix it in well. 4. Preheat a non-stick pan on a medium heat. 5. Spray the pan with a little Spray and Cook and spoon tablespoons of the mixture into the pan. 6. Wait for bubbles to form on the top and then gently flip the flapjacks over with a spatula. Wait for about a minute or two and then remove them from the pan. *These are best eaten hot, so don t make them too long before you plan on eating them. 36 L A W O F KOBUS LOUW DOMESTICS GARDENERS CHILDMINDERS The Domestic Workers Act applies to Domestics, Gardeners, Childminders (including drivers of children) and those who look after the sick, aged or disabled in private homes. The Act specifies working conditions such as hours of work, overtime pay, salary increases, deductions, as well as annual and sick leave. & L A W Almost 10% of cases referred to the CCMA (Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration) are disputes referred by Domestic household workers, Gardeners and Childminders. In most of these cases, they claim to have been unfairly dismissed. In this article I will refer to these employees as Domestics. When Domestic workers are dismissed they act in a very aggressive manner as they seek to be compensated money for the injustice that they believe have been done against them. It s all about money you see. So when you need to attend the CCMA proceedings, you have to prove two things. Was the dismissal for a fair reason and did you follow a fair procedure? You see, you can t just dismiss your Domestic for theft without a disciplinary hearing. You need to afford your Domestic a fair hearing and all his/her legal rights normally associated with a disciplinary enquiry, such as an interpreter, representative, witnesses, etc. There are also other matters such as the legal minimum wages that need to be complied with, employment contracts and registration with UIF. If your domestic works for you for more than 24 hours a month, they must be registered with the Unemployment Insurance Fund. The law requires further from you to give your Domestic a payslip and to keep an attendance register. I have therefore tied close links with an Insurance Broker and asked them how they can assist Employers of Domestic Workers to safeguard House Owners against unnecessary compensation awards to be paid to their Domestic. We have come up with an excellent solution and now have a plan for all Domestic Households to assist the Owner of the house. My aim is to assist the residents of Silver Lakes Golf Estate in disputes against their Domestics. You therefore have the peace of mind that you have your own Labour Law Advisor on call 24/7 for any assistance in regards to your employees and I will assist with all your legal compliance in terms of the Act. Prevention is better than cure and it is important that all proper procedures and policies are adhered to when it comes to hiring a helper. My service include: Domestic worker Employment contract Register the Domestic for UIF Representation at CCMA Compiling of a Work Schedule or Time Attendance Sheet Assist with the compilation of a Pay Slip Conducting your Disciplinary Hearing Assist with Incapacity (Illness), Absenteeism and Stay-Aways Substance and Alcohol Abuse at work, Managing Poor Performance Domestics should not work more than 15 hours overtime in any week. Overtime is paid at one-anda-half times the normal wage (or the employee may agree to receive paid time off). They should also receive double pay on Sundays and on Public holidays. Employers whose domestics live on the property may deduct 10% of their salary for accommodation. And then there is the Maternity Leave issue, how long leave period can she take, what amount of salary to pay the Domestic for this period and how to go about for Domestics to get paid her UIF benefits, etc. Please contact me to set up a meeting to assist you with any of the above legal aspects and to comply to the Act. 38 CONFLICT MANAGEMENT DR ILSE RUANE PSYCHOLOGY Conflict is a difference in opinion. In other words, it is when one person s goals or behaviour are in contrast with those of another person. Every person uses different techniques to handle conflict. These strategies are learnt in childhood and function automatically. Usually we are unaware of how we behave in conflict situations. We do what comes naturally to us at that moment. The trick is to see conflict as an opportunity to get to know each other better, to sort out misunderstandings and look for creative solutions that will satisfy both parties. 1.2 SHARK (FORCE TO WIN) Tries to overpower opponents by forcing them to accept their solution to the conflict. Their goals are highly important and relationships as well as the needs of the other person are of minor importance. Sharks believe that conflict is resolved by finding a winner and a loser, as long as they are the winners. They have trouble in acknowledging their mistakes. This style has the potential to destroy your relationship. There are two factors that should be taken into account when looking at conflict situations: Reaching your personal goals You are experiencing conflict because your goal opposes the goal of the other person. Your goal may be more/less important to you. Maintaining a healthy relationship with the other person The relationship can be very important/less important to you. The importance of your own goals, as opposed to the importance of the relationship, as well as your conflict style will determine how you behave in the conflict situation. These styles are learnt and therefore, you can choose to learn a more effective style of managing conflict. There are five easy ways to identify conflict styles, namely: 1.1 TURTLE (WITHDRAW AND AVOID) Withdraw in order to avoid conflict. Gives up on both personal goals and the relationships. It is easier to withdraw from conflict than to resolve it. The turtle feels helpless and thinks that it is not worth the effort to try and resolve the conflict. If turtles have explosive arguments, it tends to reinforce their belief that conflict is bad and should be avoided at all costs. 1.3 TEDDY BEAR (GIVE IN LOSE) The relationship is of prime importance their own goals are of little consequence. Teddy bears want to be liked and accepted by others and feel that conflict should therefore be avoided. They believe that conflicts cannot be discussed without damaging the relationship. They give their goals up to preserve the relationship. Both parties experience suppressed/passive aggression if this style is used. 1.4 JACKAL (COMPRISING) They are moderately concerned with their own goals and their relationships with others. They seek a compromise. They give up part of their goals and persuade others in the conflict to give up part of their goals. They like to have an agreement where both parties can say: We may not have got all that we wanted, but at least we got something. This strategy implies a loss of something and is not really successful in resolving the emotions caused by conflict. 1.5 OWL (CONFRONTING) Owls value their goals and their relationships highly. Conflict, for them, is a challenge for growth. They seek a solution that achieves INTRA MUROS AUGUST I 2016 (38) DESIGNED BY I PISTACHIO DESIGNS

39 both their own goals and the goals of the other person. Owls don t see conflict as a problem but rather as a means to improve relationships by reducing tension between people. They try to clarify the real issues and consider solutions that satisfy themselves and the other person. This style helps to maintain the relationship. Owls aren t satisfied until tensions and negative feelings have been fully resolved. In addition, it is important to be aware of factors that negatively influence conflict, such as silent treatment, digging up old fights/ offences, words like always/never/typical, saying things like you are just like your mother, denial and sarcasm, feelings of guilt/ blaming the other person, and avoiding involvement. These hamper the process of conflict resolution and can result in deeper hurts. For effective conflict management: Remember to define your needs. Think about what you want to say before communicating it. Tell the other person what you want: send I messages like I feel / I think / I understand Listen to the other person s needs/ find out what s/he wants I hear what you are saying Think of possible solutions together; help each other to find the solution that will let both of you win. Decide on a solution that satisfies both of you OR agree to disagree. Try out the solution that you both decided on. Evaluate the solution tell each other if it is effective or not: How could you have handled it differently? In summary: Tips for effective conflict management: Choose the right time and place don t hit and run. Stick to the topic and handle one thing at a time. Ensure that the other person receives the right message. Give the other person a chance to state his feelings/opinions. Listen to what the other person is saying, and ensure that you understand his thoughts, feelings and needs. Do not decide on behalf of the other person what his thoughts and feelings should be. Acknowledge your feelings and be honest about them. Be positive and find a solution that will satisfy both parties. Always handle others with respect. Resolve conflict immediately; avoid procrastination. Try to see conflicts from the other person s point of view. Create an atmosphere of trust. Acknowledge your own mistakes. Accept that you cannot always get your own way; be willing to sometimes give in. Be open for others ideas/perspectives. If you take steps to change your behaviour, ensure that it is permanent change. Be specific with regards to the solution/compromise. Sometimes it is necessary to see the humour in situations.
