4 Important phone numbers 999 is the phone number for emergency for police, ambulance and fire patrol, but you will be put on an automatic system. We would recommend to use the numbers of the Headquarters or Police patrol. Police Headquarters Phone or Police patrol Phone The police numbers are good, they are for the headquarters here and save time as you don't have to go through the automated system. The police patrol car speeds up the response time. Anyone calling should be able to say their address or whereabouts in Bahasa Malayu. 'Tolong, ada pencuri/ada kemalagan' is probably the main theme ('Help, there's a thief/there's been a car crash'). Pencuri is pronounced 'pen-choo-ree', tahanan: ta-ha-nan. Crime and security Kuantan has the nearly the lowest crime rate in Malaysia. But there are a poor people in Malaysia and some of them are just looking for a chance to get some money. Homes in Kuantan have been raided. And handbag snatching occurs regularly. We expats tend to live in high-income areas which are attractive to the prospective burglar (although gardeners and cleaning ladies have had their homes broken into also). We would advise to practice the same kind of precautions you would back at home. If you have a burglar alarm use it every time you leave the house and in the night time. Keep your gate always closed, keep your front door always locked and keep some outside and inside lights on at night. Maybe with your neighbours you can share each other's phone numbers; when we go away for a few days tell each other. If you are involved in a traffic incident it is wise to stay in the car, take a photo with your hand phone (if it is safe to do so) and go and report it at the police station. If you are on your own don't get out of the car, things can get nasty once you are vulnerable. 7 Pelindung Heights: Surrounded by towering trees with a view of the undulating hills and greenery of the Bukit Pelindung Forest Reserve and located a short distance from Kuantan s famous tourist beach, Teluk Cempedak. 3 min to Garden International School, 5 min to Golf Club and Hyatt, 10 min to town center. Beserah: Enjoy living in a house close to the beach a bit out of town, about 10 minutes north. Have your account check, if you did not get a bill for two months. Malaysia uses volts AC at 50 cycles per second and a standard 3-pin square plus and sockets. Depending on your home country you may bring a transformer or adapter with you. In some local districts the power supply is not completely stable. Lightning Protectors: It is recommended that you hook up sensitive equipment (computer, modem, TV, etc.) to lightning protectors to prevent damage from voltage surges and lightning. Electricity bills and modes of payment: Your power consumption will be red from the meter mounted outside your house and the bill is sent to you monthly. This bill can be paid in cash at a post office, in cash or cheque at the Tenaga Nasional office, in cash at the Telkom Office. Or you use online banking. Bill should be paid within 3 or 4 weeks. The amount of your bill depends on your usage of AC. In average expats pay between RM 400 and RM 800 a month Water Pahang Water Supply Department Pahang Bekalan Air Pahang 9 10, Kompleks Tun Rasak Bandera Indera Mahkota Kuantan Phone or Water is very cheap in Malaysia. The monthly amount is about RM 3 to RM 6, if you do not water your garden every day. The bill is sent to you monthly and can be paid in cash at the post office.

8 All about cars and motoring You are allowed to drive on Malaysian roads if you have a valid driving permit from any country of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN). You may drive in Malaysia with an International driving license; however it is legal to do so only for the first 3 months. After 3 months, you will need to get a Malaysian driving permit. Few expats report trouble with the local police at regular checks when using the International driving permit though. You may still get a ticket if your police officer decides to disregard your International driving permit. But it is likely that you might have trouble without a Malaysian driving permit as soon as you are involved in an accident. For this reason it might be advisable to get a Malaysian driving permit. It will take a couple of days for the driving permit to be ready. The cost is about RM 30. Where to get a Malaysian driving permit? You will find various dealers on Jalan Beserah, Jalan Semambu and Jalan Tanah Putih. If you are here for a while it may be worth considering joining AAM, that way if you break down on the motorway you can fend off marauding tow trucks by pointing to the AAM sticker on the car. Both the AA and Kurnia were used by expats and the AA is miles better with a much faster response time. They come to the house if you can't get started, and will tow you to a garage for free if needed. Airport Counter: Arrival Hall Kuantan Airport Kuantan Phone Driving rules and regulations / coupon for Parking The road signs in Malaysia are in accordance to international road signs. The speed limit in town is 50 km/h up to 70 km/h. On the highway the speed limit is usually 110 km/h, sometimes it is limited to 90 km/h. The slow lane is left, the fast lane is right. At various car parks you will see small blue stalls. These are selling small booklets of 'scratchy' parking coupons. You can also buy these buku at various small stores with the coupon sign. You simply scratch the year, month, date and time from these and place them on your dashboard. Each one is valid for an hour, if you know you are going to be longer than an hour you can put 2 up at the same time. If you don't have these and you get a parking ticket you pay for these at the same little stalls, so it s wise to always have these in your cars.

10 Taxi in Kuantan You can get a taxi behind the wet market, left of the main entrance of the East Coast Mall or in front of the Berjaya Megamall. If you find a taxi driver you are satisfied with, ask for the phone number. These drivers are especially recommended from expats: Mr. Jamal (short and also long distances, recommended for business travellers) Phone Mr. Jas (short and long distances, recommended for business travellers) Phone Mr. Malek Phone Mr Ade (transporter for bigger groups) Phone Insurance Making sure that you have a good insurance coverage is common sense. Most companies will give their expats some insurance coverage. Take a look at your insurance and find out what is already covered and what you miss. At least you will need car insurance if you have a car. And a medical insurance might be helpful. Getting connected with phones, mobile and internet Mobile phones, hand phones or cell phones are widespread. All service providers offer both pre-paid and post-paid accounts. Most expats choose the pre-paid route. Reload cards are available at most convenience stores, stationaries and convenient stores. You can find all of the providers in the East Coast Mall or in the Berjaya Megamall. Do not forget to bring your passport and your address to buy the sim card because to register. Mobile service providers: Maxis - Celcom - Digi - Telekom Malaysia is the national phone company and service is generally reliable. To get hooked for a landline, you must first visit the nearest Telekom Malaysia office. After you submit your application it takes about one to two weeks before your telephone is hooked up. Your phone bill can be paid via internet, at every post office or at TM stores. 14 Domestic Help If your are interested in hiring a maid, just talk to someone who already employs a maid. The maids in Kuantan do their own networking and you will find an expat who can recommend a maid. The local maids are predominantly Indian and Chinese. You may arrange to have a maid once, twice or up to five times a week. A live-in maid can be hired through an agency. They are mostly Indonesian and Filipin. The minimum salary for an Indonesian maid is minimum RM 350 per month and she will work seven days a week. The Filipina maid gets about RM 700 per month and she will work six days, having Sundays off. Fishmarket Jalan Tanjung Api 1 (behind Pantai Selamat, ISK, Taman Gelora) Everyday after 4pm Get your fish very fresh directly from the sea when the fishermen come back from their trip. Morning Pasar Tani The Farmer s Market Big market every Sunday morning right next to the stadium with fresh stuff and a variety of nice food. Sentosa Market Jalan Air Putih 2, of Jalan Beserah at Michelin, drive a few blocks and watch out for a lot of cars. Open from 6am to 9am. Nice chinese market with meat, veggies, fruit and more. Jalan Kampung Jawa (off Jalan Darat Makbar, turn left after the Petronas Gas station) Every day starting at 6am, go early to catch fresh stuff. The biggest chinese market with fresh fruit, veggies, meat (except pork on Fridays), organic veggies and fresh made food. Night Markets The evening markets are a nice place to amble along and get a quick bite to eat. Other things sold include pirated movies, fruit and veggies, clothes, stickers and nick nacks. 20 Water and water dispencer For basic drinking water you can get a filter at your tap or use a water dispencer. There are some companies which deliver water for water dispencer. Prices are between RM 8 and RM 12 per bottle. One recommended delivery service: BJRO-tech Sdn.
