4 MEDLAR This is an unusual hardy ancestor of the apple tree. This low and slightly spreading tree has lovely white flowers. The fruit is eaten when very ripe and the flesh very soft. PEAR: Doyenne du Comice Originated from the Loire valley, France, mid-19th century. Comice is widely considered to have the best flavour of any pear. It has both the characteristic "melting" flesh of the highest quality pear varieties, along with a sweet richness and delicacy which others can't quite attain. Ready: Feb/March. Pale yellow/green skin (Pollinate with: Nashi, Beurre Bosc, William bon Chretien, Winter Cole or Winter Nellis) Seckel (Honey pear) Early18th century, Philadelphia. A small, reddish-brown skinned pear that is crisp fleshed, very sweet, juicy, perfumed, with very distinctive flavour. The tree is vigorous and very productive and reliable. It is also somewhat self-fertile. (Pollinate with: Nashi, Packham s Triumph,.Winter Nellis) Winter Nellis A very good late eating pear and it stores well. It has small green fruit with reddish russet patches and buttery, rich flavoured flesh. Very hardy but best with warm site. It is a good pollinator for many other pears. Tree habit is sparse and spreading. (Pollinate with: Nashi, Beurre Bosc, Doyenne du Comice, Packham s Triumph, Winter Cole or Winter Nellis) Winter Cole A small roundish, medium sized fruit. It has a warm white flesh, melting, juicy, and rich in flavour. It is a late variety (April-May) and is an extremely good keeper. Great eaten fresh or for preserving and juicing. Ideal pollinators are Beurre Bosc & Williams Bon Chretien. They prefer a warm, sunny, sheltered position, with rich fertile, free-draining soils. NASHI Hosui Golden brown skin. Mid-season (Jan/Feb). Crisp and juicy. Medium to large fruit PLUM: Billington Early-season, small meaty plum with dark red skin and firm, light red, very good flavoured flesh. When cooked, bottled, or used to make jam, it has no bitterness. It retains its bright red flesh colour when poached. It crops very heavily, hangs on the tree well, and is notably resistant to bacterial diseases. (Self -fertile) Burbank Mid- season. Burbank plums are medium sized, roundish, bright red mottled yellow skin, and have deep yellow flesh of very good flavour. The trees are partially self-fertile and often set extremely heavily, which can lead to fungal disease such as brown rot spreading. Pollinated by Duff s Early Jewel and Omega. Coe s Golden drop Mid to late season plum. Large, oval yellow fruit both rich in taste and juicy flesh. It is best planted with a greengage plum tree. Other Pollinators are Damson or prunes. Duffs early Jewell Early-season, this small fruit has red skin and yellow flesh.' Self-fertile, a good pollinator for other plums. English Greengage This classic English Greengage plum tree is a very old variety of plum. The flesh of the fruit is translucent yellow under a striking green-yellow skin. The melting, spicy sweet, fruit is of medium size and is prized by those who know them for fresh eating, jam, drying, and cooking. Best pollinator: 'Coe's Golden Drop', also Damson or prunes. Elephant Heart Late season. Introduced by Luther Burbank in 1929, unknown parentage. A large, dark reddish purple conic fruit with purple-red sweet, juicy flesh. It is a freestone, and useful for fresh eating and canning/bottling. The tree is vigorous and healthy, but crops are poor in absence of the right polliniser. Heavy bearing when the right polliniser variety is available, and hangs well on the tree for an extended harvest period. Pollinisers are 'Santa Rosa', 'Burbank' Purple king Mid-season. This large fruit has purplish red skin covered with a heavy bloom, and excellent flavoured, yellow flesh (tinged wine red near the stone). It is a very vigorous tree. It has some resistance to bacterial diseases. Pollinated by' Duffy's Early Jewel. Santa Rosa Early season, medium large, crimson to purplish red, lightly freckled plum with yellow flesh slightly suffused with pink especially near the pit. The fruit is firm, sweet, juicy, and aromatic, except near the pit, where it is quite acid. Self-fertile. The tree is hardy, upright and vigorous, and highly productive. Good choice for the home garden.

5 Satsuma Mid-season in late Jan/early Feb and produces a blood red fleshed large plum with a slight tangy flavour. It is an upright willowy grower and heavy cropper, and while it's partially self-fertile, it benefits with a 'Santa Rosa' plum nearby for pollination. Sultan Early to mid season, medium to large red fleshed, deep red skinned plum that is soft and juicy and has good flavour. Recommended for its small tree size and very reliable good crops. Wilsons Early Wilson's Early is just that with fruit ripening just before Christmas. The fruit is small and bright red with yellow flesh. Suitable for eating straight off the tree or preserving. This plum is mostly self-fertile but will do better with a pollinator such as Black Doris or Billington. Deciduous. QUINCE Smyrna This has a stronger fragrance than most varieties. The fruit is rounded or slightly oblong, and the flesh is white. Although "Smyrna" quince keeps longer than most varieties, the flavour is milder. Van Deman Self-fertile. Large fruiting. Good flavour and aroma.
