MY FAVORITE QUOTES From Vine Selection and Clones in Wine Grape Varieties in California Clone choice is only one of many important decisions when establishing a vineyard There is no one best clone A clone selected in another country is not necessarily superior to what is available locally
TODAY S TALK Resources National Grape Registry Vitis International Variety Catalogue Using resources to answer questions Is there a difference? Where to I get it?
FINDING VINES Finding material when you know what you want.
DEFINING TERMS Clone vs. Selection
WHAT DO THEY MEAN? Clone Consistently exhibits a specific set of traits that holds true through asexual propagation That trait is still expressed regardless of production location Selection A number assigned to a vine to aid in tracking that vine through a process Different selection numbers may or may not indicate different clones
WHY USE SELECTION NUMBERS? Sometimes the selection numbers are relatively meaningless Cuttings from the same cane get different selection numbers Some selections get re-numbered (but both numbers still exist in inventory) Sometimes they indicate differences in the clean-up process Macro tip Heat-treated Micro tip
SOME EXAMPLES Single FPS #s Multiple FPS #s Cab franc FPS 4 Reported French cl. 332 Chardonnay FPS 37 Reported French cl. 95 Riesling FPS 1 Reported Weis cl. 21 Syrah FPS 07 Reported French cl. 877 Pinot noir FPS 46 and 47 Dijon clone 114 Cab Sauv FPS 7,8,11 From same vine Cab Sauv FPS 21 Same as FPS 12, 13, 14, 19, 20 and 54
RESOURCES Sometimes you will need one. Sometimes you will need them all.
NATIONAL GRAPE REGISTRY Contains background information and limited to detailed history Juice, table, wine and raisin grapes Rootstocks was created to make it easier for interested parties to find domestic sources for diverse varieties and clones and to identify material which has been tested and certified as clean in regard to certain grapevine diseases.
THE WEBSITE
A QUICK SEARCH FOR CAB Cabernet Sauvignon FPS Selection #4
VITIS INTERNATIONAL VARIETY CATALOGUE (VIVC) Provides genetic information for plant breeders Why is it important? Lesser-known varieties Confirmation of potentially different names Information on source material for importing
THE WEBSITE
A QUICK SEARCH FOR CATAWBA Why Catawba?
USING RESOURCES To find varieties. To answer questions.
IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN..? Clonal evaluations are exceedingly difficult to do A truly effective trial takes 10 years What clones do you select? Where do you stop? Very few University resources (nationally) Many of those resources are not true trials (i.e., multiple clones grown in the same block under the same condition NGR has some info on limited trials WSU does not have clone performance data for WA
IS WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR IN THE USA? Use the National Grape Registry for this All varieties that have gone through clean up are in this database Can the variety I am looking for be in the USA but not in the database? Yes. But it means it has not gone through a Foundation Program. If it s not in the database, the best option for locating it using an internet search engine ALL IMPORT RULES APPLY
IS WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR IN WA? Use National Grape Registry NGR will list the Foundation Blocks and known registered nurseries carrying a variety Use Clean Plant Center Northwest All of this information will be on NGR, but you might find selections that are still in the clean-up process but not yet listed on NGR Search WA nurseries May or may not be certified
NGR LISTS AVAILABILITY BY VARIETY ONLY
CLEAN PLANT CENTER NORTHWEST
TAKE HOME Finding information on variety performance will be difficult Most information will likely not apply to WA Finding information on the source of an FPS selection is a little better Multiple FPS selections might be the clone you are looking for Use the National Grape Registry and the CPC-NW as a starting point
