6 RED LAKE VINEYARD ESTATE MEMORANDUM 4 - GENERAL AREA DESCRIPTION - NAPA VALLEY The Napa Valley is America s first agricultural preserve and is a region of incomparable natural beauty. Through accounting for just 4% of California s harvest, Napa Valley is the industry s undisputed leader in land and community stewardship, and is renowned the world over for its extraordinary wines. Surprisingly, Napa Valley is one of the smallest winegrowing regions in the world, a mere one-eighth the size of Bordeaux and 95% of its wineries are family owned. Napa Valley enjoys a Mediterranean climate, encompassing only 2% of the Earth s surface, providing incomparable, quality driven, vintage-to-vintage consistency that rare few other regions can boast. And, unlike other regions, Napa Valley has an amazing diversity of microclimates, soils, weather and topography, which means a wide array of varieties grow extraordinarily well here. Long before green and sustainable were buzzwords, Napa Valley became the first Agricultural Preserve in the US in 1968, and today has the most comprehensive and stringent land use and environmental regulations of any winegrowing region. HOWELL MOUNTAIN AVA The Howell Mountain AVA is unique in that its temperatures are slightly warmer and drier overall due more prolonged exposure to the afternoon sun. However, cooler nights and higher elevations help maintain good acidity for aging, and the rich volcanic soils create dynamic Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Zinfandel varietals with powerful and firm blackberry-current flavors that are often richly tannic. The summer daytime temperatures can range from 55-90F (13-37C) and the elevation ranges from feet ( m). In an average year, the Howell Mountain AVA receives about 42 inches (107 cm) of rainfall.
