1 The Sandon School Newsletter 4 October 2018 OPEN EVENING The Sandon School Open Evening will take place tonight between pm. We are understandably proud of our school and are looking forward to meeting prospective new parents and some not so new! I will be giving talks in the hall at 6.00 pm, 7.00 pm and 8.00 pm. May I remind you that Friday, 5 October 2018 is a non-pupil day. A Weaver Headteacher SCHOOL COUNCIL Congratulations to the following students who have been elected by their peers to represent their year groups on the School Council: Year 7 Year 8 Year 9 Sydnie Jewell Pollyanna Eve Kerry Stockley Angus Beames Will Wilson Joe Bushell Year 10 Year 11 Year 12 Danielle Grainger Jamie Johnson Georgette Payne Will Broadrick Riley Logan Daniel Linsley The School Council is chaired by the Lead Head Students and is attended by me, the Chair of Governors and Ms Trusler so provides a good opportunity for the student voice to be heard within school. I look forward to a productive year working with the School Council. A Weaver CONTACTING THE SCHOOL BY To help ensure that any queries are dealt with promptly and by the appropriate person, parents should use the addresses available on the left hand side of the home page of ispace. Here you will find individual staff addresses as well as key addresses to use for contacting finance, attendance and IT support staff. As ispace is now used to access school reports, trip and other letters, consent forms for trips etc, it is important that parents have their own logins as not all areas are accessible via student logins. If you need login details for ispace please contact support@sandon.essex.sch.uk.

2 TATE MODERN BUILDING NAMED AFTER FORMER STUDENT Former student, Natalie Bell, has had one of Tate Modern s main buildings named after her in recognition of the vast amount of work she does in her local community in Southwark. The Boiler House, which contains the galleries nearest to the River Thames, has been renamed after Natalie as part of an art project by Tania Brugeura. LEARNING SUPPORT ASSISTANT LGS BAND 2 (to mid point) 11, hours 20 minutes per week x 39 weeks Fixed term contract to August 2019 An enthusiastic and adaptable Learning Support Assistant is required from November to join a strong team developing support strategies for a variety of students, including students with physical difficulties, across the age range We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Appointments will be subject to references and enhanced DBS checks. Closing date: midday on 18 October 2018 Further information is available from our website: or from Mrs J Hampton on or jhm@sandon.essex.sch.uk at the school. STUDENTS VISIT HYDE HALL Six students representing the Sandon School Garden Club and Science Department spent the day at RHS Hyde Hall on 18 September taking part in the Green Plan It Challenge workshop. The students learnt about how to grow different plants in different conditions, which plants went well together and even tasted some vegetables. Each school represented was given a mentor who works at Hyde Hall to give them ideas. The students now have ten weeks to plan their own garden which could be for a community or school. This will mean researching plants and deciding what to plant. They also have to make a 3D model of their garden, a folder on what they have done and posters. The students are looking to do a garden based on the five senses and a memory garden for those with memory loss. After the planning phase, students then return to Hyde Hall on 12 December to present the project to the other schools and dignitaries, with three different prizes to be won. There is a lot of work to be completed but they are all very keen to take part. If you are at the Open Evening do have a look at information on this challenge in the Science Department. Mrs Jarvis

4 ARTS SPLASH! Film/Media Mr Morris, Subject Leader of Film Studies, and the Drama Department launched an exciting project with year 8 last week. In drama lessons students are learning how to plan a storyboard and the various shot types as a competition for an innovative Film Making Day. Winning groups will be invited to participate in a day of film making with a company called Into Film. The groups will be expected to make a suspense film and will shoot the film and edit during the day of 11 October. Prizes and certificates will be awarded to the winners. Further film making opportunities will be explored later in the term and into the New Year in a brilliant cultural project linking Essex County Council Cultural Partnerships with our music, media and drama departments. Students will be invited to make a film commemorating the centenary of the end of World War 1 by researching at Essex Record Office. The film will share historical research about a Chelmsford based World War 1 soldier and his violin plus live footage from Orchestra Live of the violin being played in performance. More news soon Alumni Actor returns to Sandon Former student Andrew Steel (professional name Andrew Oakes) returned to Sandon last week to deliver two acting workshops to year 12 A Level Drama and Theatre. Andrew thoroughly engaged our students with his fun delivery style and shared some excellent approaches to expressive and vocal delivery of monologues. Mr Danko commented, It s always wonderful to have our alumni students come back and share their talents and experience with our students. Year 12 loved having Andrew back; he has been an asset to the Department Andrew can be seen delivering his famous and highly spooky Ghost Walks around Maldon throughout October and November, which are highly recommended. Year 7 Choir Well done to all those who auditioned for the year 7 choir. We look forward with relish to hearing you sing at the Year 7 Concert. Drama Workshops for talented students. These workshops with alumni actress Holly Hostler-White are now full and Mrs Davis is now keeping a waiting list for those interested in workshops after Christmas. Main Drama Production No Place Like Rome! Congratulations to those who gave a successful audition. Everyone who auditioned got a part in the show. Since the audition, the studio has been packed with excited students who have now started learning lines, songs and choreography. We look forward to a super show on the main stage in February. Orchestra Live Performance in Chelmsford Cathedral Note the correct date is: Wednesday 7 th November Mrs Davis Curriculum Team Leader Performing Arts

5 VISIT TO THE GLOBE THEATRE On 27 September, a group of A Level English Literature students went on a trip to The Globe Theatre in London to watch a professional production of the Shakespeare play Othello. Given that the students are studying the play for their course, it was very useful to see how it would have been presented in Elizabethan times when it was written, and how much of a contrast it is to the film version. All of us were amazed at the appearance of the Globe Theatre, including many of the historical features such as the Elizabethan art designs around the walls of the theatre and the circular area in the middle of the theatre where a large number of audience members have to stand during performances which can be up to three hours long! Everyone (in particular Ms Henderson and Miss McKenna) enjoyed the atmosphere of being in this historical theatre, as well as the great, realistic performance of the actors. This was a massive relief considering many of us were uncertain over whether we would be able to keep up with the play due to the fact that we had never seen a Shakespeare play performed live before. Overall, this was a really useful and entertaining trip for the English Literature students to take part in as we were offered a fascinating insight into how Elizabethan audiences would have watched (and appreciated) a Shakespeare play in his heyday. I m sure that this has inspired the majority of us to see more Shakespeare plays at The Globe in the future. Thank you to Ms Henderson and Miss McKenna for organising this fantastic trip for us! Alfie Fairlie, 12CMRO OPPORTUNITIES FOR NEW SCHOOL GOVERNORS Baddow Hall Junior School is looking to recruit two Co-opted Governors and one Parent Governor who are interested in education and preferably have specific experience or knowledge in one or more of the following areas: Facilities management Information Technology Health and Safety Change Management For more information about the role and an informal chat, please contact Laura Ashton (Chair of Governors) via laura.ashton@baddowhall-jun.essex.sch.uk.
