1 The Sandon School Newsletter 20 April 2017 NATIONAL SCHOOL ANALYSTS COMPETITION On Tuesday, 28 March six Year 12 A-Level Chemistry Students, making up two teams (Alex Pateman, Matt Ogley & Jo Watson in Team 1, Tom Rehal, Abby Middleton & Megan Brown in Team 2), together with Mr Weaver travelled to the University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield for the National Schools Analyst Competition Eastern Region heats. We were to compete against 16 other teams from schools across the Eastern region. We made use of the University s new 50million Science block and equipment. The competition itself set the task of finding out the percentage of paracetamol in a tablet through three methods, those being High Performance Liquid Chromatography, UV spectroscopy and a Titration. We were assessed on our practical skills, safety, calculations carried out on the results of the practical, team work and ability to follow the instructions for a practical that we had never seen before the actual task was unknown to us until we arrived. All of the teachers accompanying the teams had to leave the labs after the start of the day so that we couldn t get any help from them it was all down to us! The experience was both educational and fun. We left with new practical expertise and experience in practical work in a time-restricted pressurized environment as well as developing new skills using chemical technologies and equipment not usually available to sixth form students. Tom Rehal OLD STYLE 5 NOTES On Friday, 5 May 2017 the old style paper 5 notes will cease to be legal tender. Please note that the school will therefore be unable to accept old style 5 notes after that date. Finance Department
2 FORMER STUDENT ANDREW STEEL We have some good news to share concerning former student, Andrew Steel (professional name Andrew Oakes). Having finished his professional acting training at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in June 2016, Andrew had to decide recently between two acting jobs. The first was more of a guide, although only actors were auditioned, for Dinosaurs in the Wild. The second, which he has taken, is with a rural touring open air theatre company through the summer. The company is called Folksy Theatre and is based in Scotland. Andrew will be in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night for July and August playing the parts of Malvolio and Antonio. There will only be about 7 actors in the cast, doubling up on parts. The company will be performing in 34 places from Aberdeenshire to Cornwall so he will get to see a lot of the country. The contract has been signed and Andrew is now waiting for the script to arrive. We wish Andrew every success during his time with Folksy Theatre and hope it leads to many more exciting opportunities. SILVER DUKE OF EDINBURGH S AWARD TRAINING WEEKEND Good luck to the 23 students who will be leaving tomorrow to complete their silver Duke of Edinburgh s Award training weekend. They will be spending two nights camping in the South Downs and will be walking for approximately six hours each day, carrying all their camping equipment, food, clothes etc. NEW PE KIT Further to our recent announcement concerning the introduction of an updated PE kit from September 2017, we have been advised by Pope and Smith that the kit should be available in their store from early May. We will update you if this information changes. As soon as we have photos of the full kit, we will include them in the newsletter. Those students with existing kit will be able to continue to wear it for PE lessons. Mrs Bayley Business Manager
3 SCHOOL COUNCIL NEWS Each year FOSS very kindly donate a sum of money to the school, a proportion of which is allocated to the School Council (pictured above). They then consult with their year groups and bring back ideas for items that could be purchased using that money, discuss the merits of the suggestions and agree which items should be progressed. This year the following items of expenditure were agreed by the School Council: Easels for the Art Department Equipment for Food Technology Clipboards for Geography Contribution towards Lighting Board for Drama Department Thank you to FOSS for all the work they do to raise such valuable sums for the school and for their subsequent donations. JACK PETCHEY CHALLENGE On Wednesday, 29 March Holly Liddiard represented our school in the Jack Petchey Speak Out! Challenge at Woodlands School. Holly delivered a progressive, powerful and personal speech called Brave, during which she questioned society s prejudice towards those who do not conform to gendered clothing. She s invested a lot of time and effort in preparing and practising this speech, and we are very proud to have her represent Sandon. Well done, Holly! Miss Cunniffe English Department
4 On the hottest day of the year I completed my 8 th marathon, with a Personal Best of Yessss! This one was HOT. Now I know a bit of sun comes up in Britain and we all run for the BBQ, but this was some serious sun, not ideal when running 26.2 miles. It was also hilly. A flat marathon is always a good one because you don t risk losing pace going up hills, but no, not Brighton - hilly and hot! I really wanted a time for 3.45, which will give me a Good for Age time and get me automatically entered into London But I thought it was out of reach, although I was fairly confident I d get a PB. However, I still had the traumas of Berlin marathon replaying in my head, so I was very nervous. I was feeling good though for most of it, and even better when Miss Keable surprised me at mile 7! Seeing that goofy face at mile 13 and at mile 25 (although I was less excited by mile 25) really spurred me on! But mile is a dark, dark place, and I knew I would be battling with demons at this stage. No matter what training I do, I seriously struggle physically and mentally at this point and I watched my pace get slower and the dream of 3.45 move out of reach. So I changed the display on my watch so I wasn t clock watching and panicking and tried, where I could, to relax. I could finally see the finish line, but it took so long to get to, like a cartoon where they are running on the spot and they never get anywhere. At this point I had no idea I was on for a sub 3.45, but I managed a fast(ish) run to the end. I crossed the finish line and my first thought was, Am I okay? Am I going to cry..? but no, not this time, I felt, sort of, okay! Then I stopped my watch and looked at my time, and was completely ecstatic that my watch said boom! I knew I had given it everything, and the burn out of those last few miles proved that. I probably felt as bad as I did in Berlin in those last few miles, but this time I thought, I ve done it before, I survived before, you can do it again and it became normal. In what world would complete exertion be normal?! I m doing Berlin again in September and will aim for hopefully another PB, and then if all goes well, marathon number 10 in London next year. If you d like to get into running then I ll be doing the long distance running events at athletics club this year on a Tuesday afterschool! Miss McKenna also takes running club on Thursday after school come along! Miss Elms
