1 The Sandon School Newsletter 4 January 2018 Dear Students, Parents and Carers Happy New Year and welcome back to what is traditionally a very busy Spring term. We have the Year 9 Option Choice and Careers Evening on 18 January, and the final preparations and revision sessions in the lead up to public examinations in the summer term. Last year s Year 11 have their GCSE Certificate Evening on 8 February and we look forward to celebrating their successes with them. The Drama Department is very busy this term preparing for its production of Peter Pan to be performed on 6 and 7 February - keep an eye on the newsletter for more details. With January and February to get through before the weather improves, I would like to ask students to ensure they wear something reflective over their uniform when walking to and from school, so that they can be seen by motorists on these dark mornings and evenings. Also please check that we have up to date mobile telephone numbers so we can contact you should the school have to close due to inclement weather. Guidance for Adverse Weather and the Alternative School Day is on our website under Information. J Wincott TOM ANSTEY Congratulations to our alumni Mr Tom Anstey for winning the Jack Petchey Leaders Award which was presented to him at the end of last term by Mr Danko. Tom won the award for his outstanding contribution to technical theatre (lights and sound) for our many productions. He has been a valued volunteer and we are extremely grateful to him for all that he has done to promote excellence in technical theatre over 10 years. Mrs Davis CTL Performing Arts

2 SAMUEL WILLIAMS Congratulations to former Head Boy, Sam Williams, who completed his training as a Warfare Officer at Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC) and passed out into Her Majesty s Fleet as a Midshipman in December. This in itself is a tremendous achievement, but Sam was also awarded best Warfare Cadet, the College Sword for best overall cadet and has been nominated for the Queen s sword/telescope which will be decided by Her Majesty in the New Year. Sam will be returning to BRNC to continue his warfare training and will be one of the College Seniors in the role of St VINCENT SQUADRON Senior Sub-Lieutenant for the premier Squadron at BRNC. J Wincott FREE SCHOOL MEALS Please note that the link on our website to apply for Free School Meals has changed to If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact the Finance Office at the school. Many thanks Mrs K Bayley Business Manager NUTS Please be aware that we have some students in school who have severe nut allergies. Whilst we cannot completely avoid all nuts in school, it would be of a great assistance if nut items were not included as part of a packed lunch. Mrs Bayley Business Manager BUS TICKETS Can we remind students that the school bus operator complies with the Essex County Council policy of no pass, no ride. Please can students ensure that they always carry their bus pass. If they have lost their pass during the day, they should see Student Administration who will assist. Replacement bus passes are available from Fourways Coaches at a cost of Can we also remind you that seats cannot be bought for friends who do not usually use the buses as there is insufficient seat capacity to offer this facility. Thank you Mrs Bayley

3 SECOND IN CHARGE - MATHEMATICS TLR 2c ( 6,513.14) The Sandon School is an oversubscribed mixed comprehensive of around 1260 students with an excellent reputation in the local area. We have superb facilities and view ourselves as an innovative teaching and learning community. The school is situated close to the main road on the east side of Chelmsford within easy reach of Chelmsford, Colchester, Southend and Brentwood and has good public transport links. We require from Easter or September 2018 a well-qualified, enthusiastic and experienced Teacher of Mathematics to undertake the responsibility of deputy to the Head of Maths and a key stage responsibility within our successful, well resourced department. Applications are invited from someone who is keen to take a strategic role in raising achievements in teaching and learning and inspiring students to participate and achieve within mathematics. Applicants should have the desire to use ICT for Teaching and Learning purposes. We offer: Excellent access to ICT facilities A friendly and supportive staff Commitment to continuous professional development We are seeking: An excellent and innovative classroom practitioner Excellent administrative and organisational skills Confident and competent user of ICT systems We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Appointments will be subject to references and enhanced DBS checks. Please contact Mrs J Hampton for an application pack on or by jhm@sandon.essex.sch.uk or see the school website for further information and an application form. Closing date: 31 January 2018 LOST PROPERTY Any student who has misplaced anything is encouraged to take a look through the items in Student Admin and PE. Can we also ask that all students check that they have not picked up anyone else s belongings in error? It is easily done and can lead to a lot of frustration for all concerned. With so many students having identical uniform and similar coats and bags, this is always going to be an issue, but it can, of course, be limited if all items are NAMED. Please remember that the students should have responsibility for keeping track of their belongings. POSTAGE STAMPS If you have any stamps collected over the Christmas period, don t forget that we collect stamps in school for the RNIB. There is a collection point in the ATLAS centre. Thank you
