1 Friday 22nd June 2018 The Newsletter of King Henry VIII Preparatory School Academic Year Issue 31 HEADS MESSAGE FORTHCOMING PREP SCHOOL EVENTS Yesterday, 21 st June, was the International Day of Yoga it s a real thing! The idea was first proposed by the Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly in He said: Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and wellbeing. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help in well being. When proposing 21st June as the date, Modi said that the date was the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere having special significance in many parts of the world and coinciding with the Summer Solstice Midsummer. As the end of our academic year approaches we are certainly glad that the summer sun is shining on us. Our stunning student productions are complete but I am sure parents will enjoy Henry s hospitality even more if the good weather continues to bless our Sports Days, Open Mornings, New Parents Evenings and Prize Giving events. At such a busy time, for staff and children, taking care of each other is crucial. Children may find changes to their normal routine tricky and may worry about new classes and transitions. Please remember that teachers will do their best to support you and the children so do let us know if we can help. 2 NOTIFICATIONS LAST DAY OF TERM The school will be closing for the Summer holiday at 12pm on Friday 6th July. All children are to be collected by 12pm. There will be no aftercare or clubs. OPEN MORNING REMINDER We are having our Open Morning on Saturday 23rd June so tell your friends and neighbours about this opportunity to visit our super school! GAZEBO PLEA! If any parents can lend a pop up gazebo to use for Hales Sports Day on Monday 25th June, please contact Mrs Mellor (mellorh@khps.co.uk) who will advise regarding what time to drop it off or come to set up if you would prefer. Thank you! MOBILE PHONES IN SCHOOL Please note that Hales children should only have a mobile phone in school if they travel independently. On arrival at school phones must be handed into the office immediately. Phones can be collected at the end of the day, until 5.00pm. Pupils caught using phones in school or on the playground will have them confiscated and parents will be contacted. WATER BOTTLES We would like to remind parents that every child should be bringing a bottle of water to school each day. As the weather is getting hotter, children need to make sure that they are keeping hydrated at all times. HOLIDAY CLUB Holiday club forms are now available on the school website. Paper copies can also be found at Hales and Swallows receptions. WELL DONE ARIANNA! Arianna in Year 3 had a great half term, having competed in the US Kids Golf European championship at Longniddry Golf Club. There were over 600 junior golfers from various countries in various age categories and Arianna came in 16 th place. Arianna said she had fun playing and enjoyed meeting lots of new friends from around the world. SCHOOL BANK Here are the dates for the HSBC School Bank after Half Term. Please only bring money into school on days where the School Bank will take place. Friday 29th June WELL DONE KARAM! Karam in Year One has received his Blue Peter badge. He was so excited and extremely proud to have received this. He collected an amazing amount of batteries during the competition KHPS ran and wrote to Blue Peter telling them. They have awarded him a green Blue Peter badge for caring for the environment. Well doe Karam!

3 YEAR 6 PRODUCTION OF ALADDIN This week audiences were treated to a feast for the eyes and the ears with Year 6's musical extravaganza, Aladdin. With green screen technology, homemade and professional props and scenery, superb dances and rousing songs, this play had it all! Mrs Osman would like to say a special thank you to Mrs Avloniti for her wonderful direction, Miss Sainsbury for her musical genius and Mrs Patel for her fantastic production skills. A special mention should also go to Mrs Sutherland for her artistic input and Mrs Tucker for her sewing skills! Finally, our thanks go to the parents for their support with costumes and rehearsals and, of course, our amazing children! We are sure that pupils will remember this week for many years to come - a fitting end to their Prep school careers! Well done, Year 6! YEAR ONE AT THE COVENTRY INSPIRATION BOOK AWARDS On Wednesday five members of Mrs Parker s Story club were invited to the Ricoh Arena to take part in the Coventry Inspiration Book Awards. These Year 1 children have been involved in the voting for their favourite book since November and were very excited when Grumpy Frog by Ed Vere was declared the winner. They bravely shared their opinions about the story with the large audience at the event and presented the award to the author. Well done children!
