1 Friday 17th November 2017 The Newsletter of King Henry VIII Preparatory School Academic Year Issue 8 HEAD S MESSAGE Many of the children have commented today, how strange it felt to get washed and ready for school this morning and then put their pyjamas back on! It is to their absolute credit, that despite the hilarity, their conduct has been super around school and I have overheard several extremely reflective conversations focussing on why it is that Children in Need is such an important annual charity event. I am sure many of you will settle down this evening to watch the television extravaganza. It is easy to pick the more challenging pieces of film, in between the comedy sketches and pop-star appearances, to nip out to make a cup of tea. If you think your children are mature enough, please do take time to watch these articles with them and talk about the issues presented. We are so very fortunate at King Henry s Preparatory School that it would be easy for our children to presume everyone else lives with the same daily comforts. I would like to thank you for your generosity today and on the many other occasions during our school year that you are able to show your children how important it is to care for those less blessed than ourselves. These are the life lessons that I hope they will take forward into adulthood. This week in assembly We thought about the theme of anti-bullying week all different, all equal. Next week in assembly We will be considering what we learnt during antibullying week and how we treat other people as a result. The room has only two possible exits: two doors. Through the first door there is a room constructed from magnifying glass. The blazing hot sun instantly fries anything or anyone that enters. Through the second door there is a fire-breathing dragon. How does the man escape? SOLUTION: Wait until night time, then leave by the first door. Our new riddle is: A cowboy rides into town on Friday, stays for three days, and then leaves on Friday. How did he do it?

2 NOTIFICATIONS REMINDER WARM CLOTHING A reminder to parents that all pupils should be wearing a warm rainproof coat everyday now, not just a blazer and jumper, as the weather can change so quickly. It is particularly important when travelling to use either the University or Foundation astro-turf pitches that pupils take all their extra warm kit and a water bottle. These pitches can be very cold and windy places without much shelter. NON UNIFORM DAY There will be a non uniform day on Friday 24th November in exchange for a bottle or sweets as donations for the Tombola for the Christmas Fayre. Please make sure that any contributions are sealed and in date. LOST PROPERTY We have a lot of named lost property that has gone missing recently. Please can parents look at home for anything named that doesn t belong to your child and return it to school. HOLIDAY CLUB Holiday club forms are now available and can be found at Hales and Swallows receptions and via the KHPS website. BUDDY SYSTEM The children in Year 3 may come home this evening and tell you all about their Year 6 Buddy. As part of our ongoing pastoral support for our younger children we thought it would be a lovely idea for the Year 3 children to be 'matched' to a Year 6 child, whom could then become their 'Buddy'; someone they could play with, go to for help or advice and someone who would be a good role model for them during their first year at Hales. Both Year 3 and Year 6 completed forms telling us about their hobbies and the things they like to do. We then matched the children accordingly, to the nearest fit! Today they had their first Buddy session where they met their Buddy, they found out some things about them and completed a fun task with them. We hope they will have a Buddy activity session at least once a term. SCHOOL BANK If you wish for your child to make a deposit, please make sure that it is in a sealed envelope and that on the front is written clearly: Child s name Class Amount Please only bring in money on the morning of the School Bank.

4 U11 HOCKEY v The CRESCENT - WESNESDAY 15TH NOVEMBER Despite not having had a hockey lesson since before half term the girls played some excellent hockey showing great team work. They are understanding the different positions, showing improved individual skills and tactically are understanding the game much better. Well done girls. Results: 'A' team lost 1-4 'B' team won 7-0 School Games - Biathlon Final A fabulous morning of swimming and running for the 8 children who represented Coventry East at the Biathlon Final last week. Results to follow. REARRANGED FIXTURE The U9 A, B, C & D Rugby fixture against Blue Coat School has been rearranged for Tuesday 5th December. 2.45pm start at Blue Coat School. REMINDERS: Friday 24th November No girls' hockey club Boys' hockey club will be at school on the astro. Pick up at 5.45pm. HOUSE SPORT WEEK - HALES During the week beginning 27th November (weather permitting) we will be running all our house sports events for this term. These events provide opportunities for all the children to play for a team and represent their house. During the double games lessons, all the girls will play hockey and all the boys will play rugby. This year for the first time we will be running house cross country which will take place in the single games lessons. More information to follow and watch out for the results. House points will be awarded.
