1 Friday 8th June 2018 The Newsletter of King Henry VIII Preparatory School Academic Year Issue 29 HEADS MESSAGE You can always tell when someone is a very special person when their absence is noticed immediately in a school. A few children and families have enquired over the last few days after Miss Soan. With her permission I am able to share that she has been with her family in Shropshire where earlier this week her mother passed away after a short illness. I am sure you would like to join with me as part of her school family in offering our love and prayers at this difficult time. (The primrose is Miss Soan s mum s favourite flower). Guaranteed place offers to King Henry s Senior School Letters regarding guaranteed places to our Senior School will be sent out during next week. Kind regards, Mrs G Bowser Headteacher THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK The most inspiring piece of advice I've gotten is simply to persevere. My mom taught me to always keep going no matter what from an early age. When it feels too difficult to push forward, I always remind myself, 'This too shall pass,' and then I redouble my efforts. Liya Kebede WELL DONE AYLA! We are delighted to share with you that Ayla in Reception so very kindly, recently had her hair cut and donated to The Little Princess Trust. They provide real hair wigs free of charge to children and young adults who have sadly lost their own hair due to cancer treatment and other illnesses. Well done Ayla such a kind and selfless thing to do. 3 YEAR TWO TRIP TO BRANDON MARSH NATURE RESERVE Before Half Term, Year Two enjoyed a lovely sunny trip out to Brandon Marsh Nature Reserve. The children took part in a range of activities linked to our Science topic on plants, growing and our environment. Learning activities included a mini beast hunt, forest art, a nocturnal experience, pond dipping and much more. Whilst pond dipping we were lucky enough to catch and observe a range of pond life including several newts! We hope you enjoy seeing some of the photos from our trip out. Tree Canopy Senses Walk Nocturnal Experience Collecting and comparing bark rubbings Pond Dipping Forest Art Spot the newts!
4 YEAR 6 FRENCH TRIP TO LE CHATEAU D EBBLINGHEM ON THE OPAL COAST, NORTHERN FRANCE The week before half term, Year 6 embarked upon their much-anticipated residential adventure to Northern France. Despite the very early start, spirits were high as we headed towards Dover and the Channel Tunnel. After zooming under the English Channel at 99 mph and disembarking on French soil, the excited band of travellers made their way to the Nausicaa Sea Life Centre where a multitude of creatures from the deep, including penguins, sharks and seals, were viewed. Weary and with rumbling tummies, we arrived at the Château d Ebblinghem, ready to tuck into a wealth of French delicacies! On Day 2, following on from a traditional French breakfast of croissants and pain au chocolat, we set off for the traditional town of Boulogne-Sur-Mer, where pupils (and staff!) practised their French whilst conversing with locals in a bid to buy ingredients for their lunch at the market. Pupils then visited the local hypermarket, where again, their skills as independent learners and linguists were put to the test! Having well and truly earned their lunch, we tucked into our locally-sourced produce and homemade baguettes - fuelling up for a jam-packed afternoon. On Tuesday afternoon, pupils were given a unique insight into the German occupation of France during WWII with a visit to La Coupole - a sight built by prisoners of war and designed to develop and launch V2 rockets on London. This tied in beautifully with our previous work in History during the Lent Term and provided food for thought! A truly interesting place to visit! After another wonderful French meal, children tried their hand at making crepes and tartes au sucre. A priceless culinary experience, involving team work, once again allowing pupils to immerse themselves in the French way of life! On our final full day we braved the fog and rain to visit a local boulangerie where we were treated to a masterclass in croissant making. We were even given a chance to roll our own and left happy with our 'doggy bags'! A real highlight was our rather windswept excursion to the beach where we were able to watch the local seal population and enjoy a chilly ice cream in the drizzle! Having dried off, we headed to the Musée Vivant De L Abeille Bee museum, which provided a fascinating insight into the life of bees and the chance to come away with some local honey. Snails and stinky cheese was the order of the evening on our final night and the children did us proud with some enthusiastic mollusc munching! Bags packed and lights out - it was clear we had succeeded in tiring out our pupils! Upon navigating our way to the Channel Tunnel, there was time for a quick stop at a chocolate factory for a chocolate masterclass. This was a real hit - especially with the staff! Hopefully parents saw some of our creations, although I'm not sure how much made it across the border! I would like to say thank you to all staff, in particular Mme Morris, and pupils for a fantastic trip. Children clearly benefitted from the first-hand opportunity to learn about French culture and life - a wonderful memory as pupils prepare themselves to leave us next month.
