1 Friday 1st December 2017 The Newsletter of King Henry VIII Preparatory School Academic Year Issue 10 HEAD S MESSAGE Schools are always busy places but there is no doubt that at this point in the year we hit dizzying heights of activity. It was wonderful to see so many of our children involved in the Christmas Fayre last Friday, singing with the choir or demonstrating entrepreneurial skills on their stalls. Thank you parents, for your generosity sending in sweets and bottles for the tombolas and helping with the baking of spectacular cookies. Thanks also to our Parents Association volunteers who, you will not be surprised, are always keen to meet new willing helpers. This week we were wowed by Year 5 s performance of excerpts from Shakespeare s plays following a visit to the RSC it was clear that their highlight was the opportunity to hurl insults at each other using language of the period. Our Year 6 boys played a highly competitive rugby match on Wednesday evening for the Michael Whetstone Trophy against Old Coventrians. The superb team spirit, under Mr Savage s direction, led to a victory! The Senior School pool was packed on Thursday evening for a swimming gala, Year 4 children enjoyed a Greek experience day and as I write, Year 6 children are marvelling at the wonders of the Old Cathedral and Holy Trinity Church. At Swallows, Bethlehem has appeared in the sports hall as we approach one of my personal highlights of the year our school Nativity. Our Nursery children are in fine voice for their sing-a-long and the Christmas fairies visited school to ensure we look appropriately festive! Whilst, of course, we maintain momentum with our academic curriculum, these additions help us to foster our sense of school community and are the memories children will hold when they are old enough to send their own children to! Have a lovely weekend and wrap up warm! Kind regards, Mrs G Bowser Headteacher FORTHCOMING PREP SCHOOL EVENTS DECEMBER Fri 1 Mon 4 Tue 5 Wed 6 Thu 7 Fri 8 Sat 9 Mon 11 Tue 12 Wed 13 Thu 14 Fri 15 RIDDLE ME THIS Last week s riddle was: I always follow my brother but you cannot see me, only him. HALES POSTER COMPETITION Final call for the Energy saving posters they are due in on Monday 4 th December. The Rules: * The posters can be hand-drawn or done on the computer. * They should be brightly coloured to attract people s attention. * They should also have information about saving electricity. This could be: switching off the lights and projectors and keeping the heating low or anything else you think important. Entries should be handed in to Miss Brown or placed in the box in Reception. There will be prizes for the best posters and they will be displayed in all of the classrooms. THANK YOU! A big thank you to the Mr Sweetman and the DT department at the Senior school for helping Year Six to finish off their Forces topic in style! They thoroughly enjoyed seeing how gears and levers are put to use in the impressive Robots the Year Sevens have built. And for the finale: How many Year Sixes does it take to pull a school minibus? The answer is only ONE if you know how to use pulleys! FRUIT OPTION SWALLOWS We would like to inform parents at Swallows that the fruit option is available to purchase on Parentpay for the Spring Term. HOLIDAY CLUB Holiday club forms are now available and can be found at Hales and Swallows receptions and via the website. LOST PROPERTY We have a lot of named lost property that has gone missing recently. Please can parents look at home for anything named that doesn t belong to your child and return it to school. GAMES (REC-YEAR 6) Since the weather has turned colder we have noticed that some children in school do not have full Games kit as listed in the parent handbook. Please be aware that we go outside for the majority of our Games lessons. The only time that we do not go outside is when it is heavy rain or snow hence the need for each child to have full Games kit every lesson. Please can parents make every effort to ensure their child has the correct kit. Sports Staff

3 YEAR 4 GREEK DAY On Thursday, Year 4 enjoyed a fantastic, action-packed Ancient Greek day! We had so much fun acting, designing our own vases and making Greek masks. We also indulged in a delicious Greek feast...needless to say, the olives received mixed reviews! Thank you Year 4, you all looked fantastic and we hope you had a great day.

4 RUGBY FIXTURE RESULTS Friday 24th November Congratulations to the U8 A and B teams who played their second ever game of Tag Rugby against Bablake! In cold difficult conditions, al the children warmed spectators up with an entertaining fast running game of Rugby. A great performance and a start of some great careers for the players at! Wednesday 29th November The U11 s played The Michael Whetstone Memorial Match on Wednesday evening at Old Coventrians. The match was well attended and the spectators were treated to a very entertaining match which saw win Parents and supporters from both teams praised the skills and commitment from both sides and Mrs Whetstone spoke to the players afterwards telling them it was a fitting tribute to Michael and he would have loved the match. Parents have commented what a special night it was and the players felt it was an honour to participate. Thank you to our parents for attending on a freezing night and to Old Coventrians for making us feel so welcome. HOCKEY FIXTURE RESULTS Tuesday 18th November U9 A team v The Crescent A 3-3 DRAW U9 B team v The Crescent B 2-2 DRAW Friday 24th November A super evening of hockey at our astro playing School. The girls have made such progress in such a short amount of time. They are really understanding the game and playing together very well. 'A' team Won 6-0 'B' team Won 3-0 Wednesday 29th November Another lovely, if freezing cold, evening at our astro. We played in a friendly tournament organised by our Senior School, with The Crescent, Kingsley and KHVIII Year 7 A team. The 0-0 draw with the Year 7 KHVIII team was the highlight of the evening. It is great to see our girls (and the Year 7 girls who were at the Prep last year) able to compete at such a good level when we have only started playing hockey properly this term. HOUSE SPORT WEEK We have had a fabulous week of sport. It has been absolutely lovely watching all the children play with their team; supporting each other; encouraging each other and showing great resilience and determination. A full round up of all the results will be in Sagitta next week.
