These were the words of advice from Will Bayley, world number one Paralympic table tennis player who visited Tadworth Primary School on Monday 28 th May with his good friend Joe Stotesbury. Will has arthrogryposis, a rare congenital disorder that affects all four of his limbs. Joe has cerebral palsy but neither of them has let their respective disabilities stop them from achieving great things. The journey to becoming the World Number One has not been a straight forward one with Will initially heading for a career in acting. He a ended the Brit School and Joe believes that Will s love of performing to an audience can be seen when he plays Table Tennis Table with the more spectators the be er! Will s Grandma was in part responsible for Will discovering his talent for Table Tennis. At the age of seven, Will was diagnosed with cancer which was treated with a six month course of chemotherapy. Up until that point he had enjoyed playing a range of exciting sports as he put it including football but his Grandma bought him a table tennis table and advised him to try table tennis as you can just stand at the table and won t need to run around so much. Will was spo ed some years later by Joe playing in an able bodied table tennis competition. Joe saw in Will a natural raw talent for the game and asked whether Will had considered taking up the sport as a Paralympian. At first Will was a bit taken aback, not really wanting to be seen as a disabled sportsman, but soon he was on the road to Beijing and competing in his first Olympics with a wealth of other tournament wins and medals already in hand. I didn t do very well there [in the Beijing Olympics], so I m not going to talk about that, he told the children going on to tell them about what it was like as a twenty year old walking out to play on a TV court in front of a television audience of millions the world over. Joe narrowly missed out on Olympic selection but is clearly behind Will all the way and both are keen for as many people as possible to get out there in support of the Paralympics. I practice for six hours a day. In order to compete at this sort of level, you have to work at it full time. What is clear to all is how Will and Joe really emulate the Olympic values and the values which we have focused on as a school over the past few months most notably perseverance, friendship and inspiration. In the two assemblies which Joe and Will led, they shared a video, one of a handful which has been specially made for promoting the Paralympics (h p:// and talked of their achievements, which are many. They took questions from the children which included, one about Table Tennis on the Wii along with the obligatory reception pupil telling our visitors that their Dad is very good at table tennis probably as good as they are! The assembly finished with a live demonstration with the ball being smashed up to 100mph - a blur in the eyes of the audience. Fortunately, neither Joe nor Will were camera shy posing for photos with all of the classes and even our Tadworth Treats team, which seemed rather fi ing after Will had told the children of the importance of healthy eating. There were a stream of people involved in making the visit possible from Miss Devine to Mrs Brown to Russell Cudd (past Chair of the PTA) and my thanks to them for making it happen including the provision of a table tennis table for the morning. But above all our thanks to Joe and Will for giving up their morning and a day off training to spend time at Tadworth Primary School. They are a true inspiration and we are looking forward to following how Will gets on at the Olympics. Just remember Will, Keep your eye on the ball! 2 Tadworth Primary School Summer Charity Concert Thursday 21 June 2012 Doors open 6.45pm Concert starts 7pm Parents are invited to a end our Summer Charity Concert which will see children from Years 3 6 perform a variety of Disney inspired pieces. Last year s concert was a huge success with a wealth of talent on show and the children have been hard at work rehearsing away to make for what should be a truly memorable evening. No tickets necessary however their will be a collection for Cancer Research Race for Life. It s a great way for parents, relatives or friends to help raise much needed funds for school projects. For a cost of 1 per month, you will be entered into the draw for a prize of 25% of tickets sold. For example, if we sell 200 tickets the monthly prize would be 50. Each person entering the lottery will be allocated a number and it is this number that is entered into the draw each month. You can purchase as many numbers as you like giving you a better chance of winning the prize. The more we sell, the greater the prize money and the more money we will raise towards school funds. We are currently trying to reach a target of between 10,000 and 15,000 for a new Trim Trail in the KS2 playground with all weather surfacing. With 75% of lottery funds going directly to the PTA, you will be making a key contribution to this cause. Joining the lottery is simple...just fill out the application form below and return it to Mrs Marshall on the school reception along with payment. You can pay cash or cheque for one years worth of tickets at a cost of 12 or you can pay monthly by bank standing order on request. On receipt of your application and payment, I will allocate your number(s) and confirm these in writing. Your number(s) will then be entered into the next monthly draw. I will be running a lottery stall at the Spring Fair on March 24 th so please come and see me if you need further information.
