Friday 4th March 2016 The Newsletter of King Henry VIII Preparatory School Academic Year Issue 20 HEAD S MESSAGE For those of you with children at our Hales Campus, thank you for your support with not using the crescent when dropping off and collecting your children whilst the works to the road and paths continue. Unfortunately we have been informed that a section of Earlsdon Avenue South (between the Kenilworth Road and the Firs) will be closed from next week for road maintenance. We have been informed that cars will not be able to use that part of the road at all so there may be a temptation for traffic to travel down The Firs towards the Kenilworth Road i.e. in the opposite direction to the normal flow of traffic. If at all possible, I would recommend that you park a little way off from school when dropping off and collecting your children, perhaps in the Memorial Park car park, for the next week and walk the final part of the journey into school to reduce congestion. Thank you. I look forward to seeing the children perform this evening in our Stars in Your Eyes Concert and would also encourage any interested families to come to support King Henry VIII School at 7pm on Monday Evening at the Butts Stadium in the annual 1 st XV Rugby Match against Bablake School. To mums, I hope you all enjoy a wonderful Mothering Sunday and are able to rest and be looked after by doting, beautifully behaved children all day! Kind regards, FORTHCOMING PREP SCHOOL EVENTS Spring Term 2016 Fri 4 Sat 5 Tue 8 Wed 9 Fri 11 Sat 12 Mon 14 Tue 15 Wed 16 Thurs 17 Fri 18 Sat 19 Celebration Assembly Stars in their Eyes Rehearsals pm Stars in their Eyes Show 6.30pm Saturday Sports U11 Rugby 7s Tournament Bromsgrove School (A) 10.30am U11 Netball Tournament Foremarke Hall (A) 1.30pm The Croft School Orchestral Day 2.00pm CANCELLED Coventry Primary Schools Girls Cross Country Champion ships U9 A & B Netball v Eversfield (A) 2.30pm U8 A, B & C Football v Bablake (A) 3.30pm Years 1 & 2 Parents Meeting pm Class and team photographs am U11 A, B, C, D & E Football v Warwick (A) 2.00pm U10 A, B & C Netball v Bablake (A) 3.40pm Tea Time Soloists Concert Hales 5.00pm Saturday Sports U11 & U10 Tag Rugby Session 10.00am 11.30am Year 1 Spring Production Dress Rehearsal 2.00pm Year 1 Spring Production Performance pm U8 House Football Year 2 Compton Verney Trip all day Year 1 Spring Production Performance am Year 5 Forensic Morning at the Senior School Year 3 Hadrian s Wall Residential Trip Departs Year 6 Preston Montford Residential Trip Departs Book Fair at Swallows Year 4 Lego Science Electric workshop Nursery Easter Fun Day & Bonnet Parade ESSA Primary Relay s (A) venue TBC 1.00pm Year 3 Hadrian s Wall Residential Trip Returns Year 6 Preston Montford Residential Trip Returns Year 4 India Day Saturday Sports U10 Netball Tournament Bromsgrove (A) 9.30am Coventry Primary Schools Boys and Girls Cross Country Championships. Don t forget, it is supposed to be tricky so ask for help if you need it! THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute all my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her. George Washington
TEAM AND SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS WEDNESDAY 9TH MARCH We would like to remind parents that if your child has played in a netball, football or rugby team this year representing school, they will need to bring the appropriate games kit in school on that day. CANCELLED CLUBS AT HALES There will be no Orienteering club on Wednesday 9th March. Lego Mindstorm club will be cancelled on Tuesday 8th March. A MESSAGE FROM MR HALL SCHOOL BANK Here are the list of dates of the bank opening times: Friday 4th March 12:30pm 1pm Friday 11th March 12:30pm 1pm Please remember : * To only bring money in on bank days * Bring money and paying in book in a sealed envelope with your child s name and class on the front. I would like to thank all the children, parents and colleagues for the cards and messages that I received during my recent absence. It was very kind of you all to be thinking of me. KID KICK On Monday 14th March from 4.15pm Kid Kick Grading will take place. All parents are welcome. A bank representative will collect envelopes during morning registration. PA SCHOOL UNIFORM SALE The next P.A. uniform sale is on Saturday 12th March pm in the Hales dining hall. The money raised from all PA events is spent by KHVIII School to provide additional equipment and facilities for the children. Revenue generated at the uniform sales from selling on school uniform adds to this fund. Whilst donations of used school uniform is still greatly appreciated the PA have come to the decision that uniform will no longer be purchased from parents. We kindly ask that all items donated are clean and in a good condition. At the end of the academic year surplus uniform and uniform not on the current list will be donated to a charity that distributes clothing to poverty stricken areas in the world. With the exception of new style Prep blazers we have a good selection of most uniform. Senior school sports kits are always in high in demand. If you are looking for sportswear please feel free to come along to the sale to have a look! Any queries please contact the P.A. directly by e mail: pa@khviii.net As an Eco school we are thinking about all the things we waste and how we can Reduce, Reuse and Recycle instead of sending things to landfill. As part of our Reducing and Recycling we shall be collecting the following items for RE-USE: Good quality Adults and Children s clothing Paired shoes Hats, belts, handbags, ties Soft toys NO BEDDING, CURTAINS, TOWELS OR HOUSEHOLD LINEN AND NO BRIC-A BRAC. You will receive a bag next week on, Monday 7 th March, and the collection will be held on Friday 11 th March. Please send your child into school with the bags on this date. We cannot accept bags the following week. Thank you for your continued support. Miss L Brown and The Eco team
LIFE IN YEAR 2 DURING THE LENT TERM Mrs Thompson returned this term to share her archaeological knowledge with the children. This gave them a wonderful opportunity to learn how the Stone Age people created their tools and weapons. We had a fantastic hands on afternoon looking at a variety of Stone Age artefacts including a flint knife, sewing needles and an animal pelt! Last week Year 2 spent some time with Clare Bell, an author of several children s books. Whilst Clare read the story Don t panic Annika! some of our children took on the roles of Annika and her brother to bring the story to life! We also learned an important question which Clare uses to help fire up her imaginations when she starts to think about writing stories: What if? Year 2 thought of some of their own ideas: What if there was a trap door in the ceiling of the Sports Hall? What if..there was a door to another world at the back of the Hall? EARLY YEARS NEWS NURSERY TOPIC - PEOPLE WHO HELP US We had two fantastic visits this week! The first was Dr. Dahel who talked to us all about being a paediatrician. The children were fascinated to learn about all the different instruments doctors use to investigate their patients! On Wednesday, the children were again completely mesmerised, first by a real-live policeman with handcuffs and a baton, then by the arrival of his colleague with two great big police dogs! Scooby Doo showed off his prowess as a sniffer dog and Millie looked for dead bodies in the cupboard! Thank you very much to Dr. Dahel and to Richard Brown, Police Community Support Officer and Sean Barr, dog handler. Your visits really helped to bring alive our topic for the children! NURSERY LETTER OF THE WEEK Next week, our special letter will be 'F' for 'Firefighter'. If you have any items for showing, please send them in on Monday. EASTER BONNETS Just a quick reminder that this year s Nursery Easter Bonnet Parade will take place on Friday 18 th March. Traditionally, Nursery children help their parents to create an Easter bonnet that they then wear in a parade for the rest of the School.
YEAR 4 PLAY A SENSORY JOURNEY Here are some of the highlights of the Year 4 production of A Sensory Journey that happened on Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th February. YEAR 3 ROMAN BATHHOUSE MORNING On Thursday morning Year 3 took part in their 'inhouse' visit to the Roman Baths! They visited the Caldarium (hot bath) Fridgidarium (Cold bath) and Tepidarium (warm room to relax in!) They had a great morning!
There was a lovely buzz around school last week for our KHPS Book Week. We enjoyed visiting authors on both sites, a corridor book quiz, a book swap, shared reading and book badge making in the library. For World Book Day the children at Hales have been set a choice of writing challenges by our visiting author and the children will have received a 1 token which they can exchange for a special 1 book at any major book shop. Swallows will be having a book fair from the Travelling Book Company from Wednesday March 16 th to round off a great book focused half term!
YEAR 4 PLAY Year 4 performed a highly "Sensory Journey through India" last week. It was a very different experience for the audience and for the children themselves. The use of dance and movement was quite free and fluid, allowing the children to be creative and truly show their personality. It was also very much a cross curricular experience, showcasing the children's work across the half term. In just six weeks they had written and performed some stunning poetry as well as dramatic musical compositions. Narrators described the busy and colourful journey, and every child danced to the Indian music. Parents were involved in the experience too, with incense burning, Indian food to eat and a smoke filled train station. The sights and sounds captured some of the real India. Being aware of the huge contrast between rich and poor, the children also held fundraising stalls to raise funds for the Hunger Project. With parental donations from the show, they have raised over 300, a super effort by everyone. Many thanks to our incredible Year 4 children and their families. The Railway Station Rushing to get tickets, checking watches, Busy like a shopping mall, full of excitement, Waiting impatiently, exhausted with luggage, Staring at an empty track. A rumbling sound, the click clack of wheels, Its windows are eyes, its face a robot, A trumpeting elephant, the skyscraper snake appears, Scrumbling, screeching along, until the hissing stops. Buffling, shuffling, barging and charging, Stampeding like buffalos, arguing and pushing, Waddling like penguins, dashing like angry ants Shouting and screaming, babies crying, Hanging like monkeys the journey begins. Village Approaching the loud and noisy market, Bangle glitter, like twinkling starlight. Noisy, bustling people, Colourful clothing shimmering like a rainbow. Delicious spices, Our precious well, the water of life. School, treasured, A chance to learn. Banyan tree outside the shrine, Spiritual, tranquil, A special temple, Gateway between earth and our Gods. 4B Temple Poem Towering temple Colossal pillars standing with pride Silent statues posing pleasantly Marigolds, the suns of the temple, sitting patiently Shoes sparkling in the darkness, like tigers waiting to strike Bells as gold as crowns raising awareness Quiet people praying respectfully Soothing music beautifully echoing Candles glowing like the moon at night Smoke, a spirit swirling, rises, both as delicate and beautiful as a cobweb, Smells of spices, welcoming the people to India Street Timeless, active, energetic Indian street People busy, eager, buying impatiently Occupied crowds bustle with cheerful energy Neon colour, joyful colour, paints the sky Saris float, shimmering, as thin as paper Hanging like the touch of woven water Tea, spicy liquid running down your throat Piping hot spices, streaming with sunshine Like a chimney concealed in smoke Mouth-watering spices, an inferno of flavour Flamboyantly colourful, as peacocks feathers these, the secret treasures of India
