1 The Sandon School Newsletter 11 January 2018 YEAR 10 ENGLISH TRIP TO A CHRISTMAS CAROL On Friday, 15 December, about 90 Year 10 students went to go and watch A Christmas Carol at the Cramphorn Theatre in Chelmsford. The play was devised from the novel originally written by Charles Dickens, which is a story about a wealthy and ignorant man called Ebenezer Scrooge who only cares about money. In the novel he is visited by three spirits who manage to change his view of the people around him and open his eyes to the city he lives in. We went to watch this play as it would help us in our understanding of the novel as we are studying it in class at the moment as part of our GCSE course for English Literature. After lesson four on Friday, we went to be registered and then got on the bus to go to the theatre. We got there just in time, and once we were all in and we had sat down, the play began. All of the roles in the show were played by one actor, who used the set, props and costumes to bring each character to life. The set was also changed in the interval to show the difference between settings. This was a new experience for a lot of students as we had never seen a one man show before. The actor played each role amazingly, and included quotations from the novel that we can remember for our exam. In total, the play was about two hours long and was a great help for our classwork. Now we have a better understanding of it than we did before. Thank you to Miss McKenna for organising the trip and to all the teachers who came on the trip with us. It was great fun and very helpful. Anna McLean and Mollie Tuff Year 10 Students
2 MAISIE FULKER We are pleased to announce that year 7 student, Maisie Fulker, has qualified for the Essex Sportshall Athletics team and will be competing at the East of England Regional Final on 24 March against eight other counties. This is the third consecutive year that Maisie has been picked for the county team, so she s got some good experience under her belt. She currently holds the regional title for one of the field events she took part in last year and along with her 11 team mates, the Essex girls team were crowned Team Champions in We d like to wish her the best of luck for the forthcoming competition and hope that Team Essex do just as well this year. We look forward to publishing the results later in the year. SWEET AND BISCUIT TINS The Technology Department would be very grateful for donations of any unwanted sweet or biscuit tins or containers. They can be brought in to the department, where they will be put to very good use, or alternatively they can be left at Reception. Mrs Richards VARIETY CONCERT Students James Housego and Jayman Thakkar are participating in a Variety Concert at Christ Church URC, New London Road, on 19 January 2018 at 7/30 pm. James is planning to perform solo on guitar and will also have his first official church organ performance. All are welcome! Miss Johnson PETER PAN Two different sets of dates for the Peter Pan performance were inadvertently given in last week s newsletter. To clarify, the correct dates are 6 and 7 February CYCLING SAFETY We have had reports of students cycling to and from school putting themselves in danger by wearing earphones and no reflective clothing and pulling out in front of cars. Not only are they almost invisible to other road users until the very last minute, but they do not appear to hear any warnings such as cars beeping because of the earphones. PLEASE wear something reflective during this period of dark mornings and evenings, and avoid wearing earphones. Also take extra care when cycling on the roads and do not assume that car drivers can see you. X
