10 Guiding Principles For A Happy Family GUIDING PRINCIPLES FOR A HAPPY FAMILY 1. Listen attentively to others. 2. Look for the solution, not someone to blame. 3. Show patience - role model the behaviour you want to see. 4. Be kind to yourself and consider your own needs. 5. There are no have tos or should you have a choice. 6. It is ok to say NO. 7. Make time for play. 8. Give the children (and adults!) some space and independence. 9. There is no need to make comparisons :1 ratio of positive to negative comments.
11 Guidelines For Successful Family Meetings FAMILY MEETING GUIDELINES Time: Choose a regular time and day. Preferable a time when we are all most likely to be at home and one that will conducive to your kids paying attention. Place: Somewhere that is comfortable for everyone and with minimal distractions. Attendees: Set the rules for attendance. All family members are expected to attend. If someone cannot come due to another activity, then the meeting can still go ahead and they can give their input prior to the meeting. There are times when a child may state that they do not want to come to the family meeting. I simply remind them that it is their decision as to whether they participate or not, but they will still have to abide by the outcomes of the meeting. Rotating Convenor: Everyone has the opportunity to convene the meeting as it is rotated amongst all family members. Mum or dad assists the toddler and younger school aged children until they get the hang of things. Minutes: Minutes are taken at each meeting and are always reviewed as first agenda item in family meeting. The minutes are very helpful if you need o clarify decisions and it also puts accountability back on mum and dad. If we agreed to action things, then the children can hold us to account on it as the parents can to them. Time Frame: Determined by the age of the children participating. With preschoolers, aim to have the meeting go for no more than 20 minutes. Their attention and enthusiasm wanes dramatically if you go past this point. Raised Hand: Everyone must raise their hand and be acknowledged by the convenor before they can speak. Agenda Items: Although we use a formal structure for the family meetings, they are generally light hearted and fun. They are not allowed to degenerate to a complaining session. When raising an item, the family member is expected to state the problem (if there is one) and then put forward a proposed solution for discussion. Quite often the meeting is just more of a sharing time, where kids or adults provide updates to the family on areas of their life or items of interest. However, when there are items that will require some negotiation and discussion, we will give the children advance notice that I will be bringing that issue up at the next meeting. Consensus Decision Making: In brief this means that you must keep working on a resolution until you have one that all family members can agree to. This is critical to the success of Family Meetings. No one should leave the Family Meeting feeling that they have not been listened to or their needs have not been taken into consideration. This does not mean kids get exactly what they want, it actually teaches them about compromise and that sometimes to get agreement they have to make some concessions. It also teaches them to work out what are the key points they must have and teaches them to use persuasive arguments.
12 Children s Jobs - Age Appropriate Guide Age Tasks 2 4 year olds: Aim is not for perfection, but to begin learning to do things for themselves and to contribute to the running of the family home. Will need assistance. 4 6 year olds The aim is to have the kids knowing their routine of jobs to help out and carry them out without the need for reminding. Some assistance may still be required. 6 8 year olds The aim is to have children now completing these tasks independently year olds Children are now taking on tasks that require greater time allocation and complete a full household task as opposed to part year olds Aim to have a variety of indoor and outdoor jobs for children this age.
