At Fort Gordon Charles completed Airborne training and was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, station in Vietnam. After completing his tour of duty with the 101st, he applied for and received transfer to the 5th Special Forces Group (Green Berets) station in Vietnam. He remained with the 5th until his discharge from the Army. Charles reported to Fort Lewis, Washington for his discharge and then returned to his home in New Iberia. Charles worked around the New Iberia and Lafayette area for a while then later took a job with Howard Brother's Discount Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He remained in the Baton Rouge area for approximately three years. During this time trying his hand as a dance instructor for Fred Astaire's Dance Studios and later working as an artist. They had to wait for the mail to pass the day they left, in order to have money to travel on. With their love and one hundred and fifty dollars, on June 30, 1972 Charles and Deborah traveled to Orange, Texas where they were married at the Court House by the Justice of the Peace.
